Is the heating on yet?

Just that. I have never left it off so long before, but we have had a renovation and it is all heavily insulated. I don't know if it is us or if it is just warm.

Have you put yours on?

OP posts:
AvengedQuince · 13/10/2023 09:17

No, not yet. Just switched the duvets, not because I was cold but DS needed my 7.5 tog one so I now have the 13.5 (he runs hotter than me).

VineRipened · 13/10/2023 09:22

No, I won’t put it on until November.

Am about to swap to my regular duvet though instead of my very thin one.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/10/2023 09:27

Not yet, socks on is as far as I've gone. It's wet, windy and a bit dismal here in SW London, so I might have the halogen heater on in the sitting room to cheer it up a bit rather than for actual warmth.

Need to get the fairy lights up and the throws and big duvet washed next week.

JaninaDuszejko · 13/10/2023 09:30

Your OP answers the question really. It's been very warm and you've insulated your house. Of course your heating hasn't come on.

We're in the NE of England, have a 1920s semi with roof insulation and a well insulated extension at the back. Very old double glazing at the front and side and no cavity wall insulation. Our thermostat controlled heating came on strongly for the first time yesterday morning. It was frosty outside so not surprising.

BellaAndDave · 13/10/2023 09:31

Ours has been clicking on and off for a few weeks and we’ve had the log burners on too. Its 8 degrees here.

DogInATent · 13/10/2023 09:34

Not yet, but the weather is set to change tonight so the fire will probably go on.

Cookerhood · 13/10/2023 09:36

Our heating is set to come on at 18 & it hasn't done so yet (home counties). It's currently 18.8 in the living room. I've put the under floor heating to come on in the bathroom & kitchen tomorrow as the temperature is going to fall.

Decafflatteplease · 13/10/2023 09:46

Not yet here but think we will need to soon.

It's not the cold, it's the damp.

Thermometer reading 15 degrees in the lounge with a humidity of 76. We have 2 dehumidifiers on for around 6 hours a day. Large 1800s house so draughty!

I'm feeling a bit chilly but can't afford to put the heating on as we need to be able to get out credit back in the spring 😔

Cowlover89 · 13/10/2023 09:47

Yes had it on once.

RainCloudsInTheSky · 13/10/2023 10:12

Not yet as in south east and it’s been warm. It is set to drop soon so guess it won’t be long but I’d love to keep it off til November. We are away for half term so it is possible just depends how cold it gets next week.

CoodleMoodle · 13/10/2023 10:42

Not yet but the weekend is supposed to be a big drop in temp so we might have to. I'm currently sitting under my electric blanket (on quite low) but that's more because it's cosy than because I'm cold!

BogRollBOGOF · 13/10/2023 10:59

The temperatures dropped mid-afternoon on Wed, and it's been cloudy since. I'm in 1hr boost mode if needed rather than programmed automatically.

My nose was in cold drip mode earlier, and the warmth has stopped it now.
Thick jumpers don't stop the nose drip.

SquirmOfEels · 13/10/2023 11:02

No, not yet. It felt chiller before the September hot spell than it does now.

I was really wondering about putting on the heating then (but didn't as it seemed so terribly early) but not at the moment.

Somehow it feels a bit more autumnal now, but the temperature is really mild

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/10/2023 11:02

DelphiniumBlue · 12/10/2023 23:17

No, I'm in London and its not cold here, I'm still in flipflops indoors. But I did notice that lots of people have moved from shorts yesterday to long trousers today!

Same here.

It’s damp and windy but not actually cold.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/10/2023 11:04

Popped it on for half an hour last night as I was out and didn't want it chilly for the sitter!

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 13:32

Stroopwaffels · 13/10/2023 08:34

Bit early for a competitive under-heating thread isn't it? Usually it gets to about the second week of December before people start on about how mild it is and how they are sweltering in their houses.

If you've seen the weather forecasts over the last week or so you will have noticed that although the southern bit of England has had temperatures higher than average, in Scotland it's been colder than average. Single figure temperatures. So yes, the heating is on for a bit in the morning, and again in the evening.

I agree. Usually posters who start threads like this live in or near London which is usually considerable warmer than the rest of the UK.

It's currently 12 degrees and raining in South Yorkshire, and I have been back in socks for weeks.

I'm surprised at the number of posters who don't seem to have thermostats in their houses and have to switch the heating on and off.

This is the kind of weather that justifies some heating IMO.

Is the heating on yet?
Pascha · 13/10/2023 13:42

We have a thermostat and the heating is controlled by that but from about late March til October the heating is switched off and it just operates the hot water. When we do switch it over it will be set to about 18° day/15° night but since the temp will fluctuate for a while I don't really want it clicking on if it just dips in and around that temp because then we will all get too hot. It needs to be consistently colder than 18° without heating for me to leave it on permanently.

PinkRoses1245 · 13/10/2023 13:43

Definitely not (south east England)! It’s 20 degrees in our house!

DogInATent · 13/10/2023 13:47

I'm surprised at the number of posters who don't seem to have thermostats in their houses and have to switch the heating on and off.

I'm amazed someone would have their heating set to come on for less than an hour just before dawn when the house will warm back up to temperature once the sun comes up. We're all different, there are different ways of using the full range of available central heating controls.

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 14:17

I'm amazed someone would have their heating set to come on for less than an hour just before dawn when the house will warm back up to temperature once the sun comes up.

Because our house doesn't warm up when it gets light. I hesitate to say when the sun appears because that doesn't always happen.

DH is very underweight due to poor health and feels the cold very easily, so I am happy for our heating to click on and off as required. Besides, our solar panels offset a lot of the cost and carbon footprint.

Growlybear83 · 13/10/2023 14:35

I live in London and we've had the hearing on several times over the last few weeks. I've only had it on for a couple of hours in the evening so far, but from the weather forecast, it looks as though I'll be putting it back on the timer this weekend.

DragonflyLady · 13/10/2023 14:43

No. Hoping to wait another week or two yet. I had the heated blanket on last night at bedtime, but the house doesn’t feel cold. 19 in my bedroom 16 in the kitchen this afternoon. We’ve heated throws and Oodies if we’re a bit chilly but I think I’ve had my Oodie on twice in the past couple of weeks.

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 15:05

I always wonder about these heating threads.

  1. Some homes are warmer than others
  2. We all live in different parts of the UK (for the purpose of this discussion anyway. I am aware that we have overseas posters)
  3. We all feel the cold differently
  4. A big one is the cost

Comparing a big draughty old house in Scotland to a South facing flat in London is rather pointless.

Then it descends into four Yorkshiremen competitive under heating posts.

IwinUlose · 13/10/2023 15:11

I live in London and still have the fans on. My house isn't insulated or anything special.

User1748953 · 13/10/2023 15:15

Its quite warm today still, down in the south until the big chill tomorrow
