Does anyone ACTUALLY ever "curl up" with a book?

I've sat down with a book. I've lain (is that the right word?!) down with a book. I've even stood up with a book.

What I've never done is curled up with one. This seems like a complicated, uncomfortable and counter-productive manoeuvre to me.

Where are all the curler-uppers?

I’m one.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/10/2023 13:35

I’m a curler-upper

i sit on the sofa with my legs sort of to one side and the book in my lap

spitefulandbadgrammar · 09/10/2023 13:36

Lying down in a croissant shape? No. Unless I’m the park, maybe. Can’t hold that position for long. But I do have my knees up if I’m reading in a chair, turned sideways on. Sometimes enjoy my legs up and draped over the back of the bed or sofa and book balanced on my boobs.

In the winter I curl up with a cuppa a heated blanket and my phone or the tv remote. Rarely a book these days. Tik Tok has ruined my attention span.

BertieBotts · 09/10/2023 13:38

Erm, me!! I am always curled when I'm sitting or in bed, both excellent places to read books.

BarnacleBeasley · 09/10/2023 13:40

I would in a nice big armchair.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 09/10/2023 13:42

I’m currently curled up with my computer (WFH). I’m always curled up when sitting on the sofa 😂.

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/10/2023 13:43

I do, in an armchair, with legs over the side.
I sit up in bed, with pillows

GreenWheat · 09/10/2023 13:43

Only if they are also snuggled under a blankie of smugness with a hot choc.

Baneofmyexistence · 09/10/2023 13:44

Does it not mean just tucking your legs up? Or going under a blanket or duvet? In which case, yes I curl up with a book regularly!

Fwendi · 09/10/2023 13:44

But what does curled up look like to people? I see it as kind of a foetal position and I can't imagine where I'd put my book so that I could actually read it!

I stretch out with a book

Terrifyingface · 09/10/2023 13:45

I think you need a deep chair/sofa. I wouldn’t have done it with our last ones but we specifically looked for something with depth when we bought our current sofa and I can easily curl up in the corner of it with feet up in a sort of Z shape 😁

Doggymummar · 09/10/2023 13:46

Yes I am curled up now, on the sofa electric blanket on feet under my bum

MagpiePi · 09/10/2023 13:46

Ugh, simply curling up with a book is so passé.
True relaxation can only happen if you are in your pj’s with a mug of hot chocolate, snuggled up by the fire under a snuggly blanket, after having been crunching through the leaves/snow on a crisp autumn/winter day followed by hot bath with bubbles and candles.
🙄

Neekoh · 09/10/2023 13:46

No it doesn't mean curled up like that.

It means some variation of sitting/lying, often with your legs tucked under you.

One could also say 'fold myself up with a book' but it doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

Idioms aren't always literal.

Uncooperativefingers · 09/10/2023 13:47

Surely curled up is just sitting with your legs tucked up next to your side. They're curled up in that position.

I sit like that with a book, and then often end up also leaning over a bit as i get absorbed.

Sorry not under you. But legs tucked up.

DuploTrain · 09/10/2023 13:48

You need a sofa with a nice comfy arm to lean on. Sitting up with legs tucked under/next to you.

Definitely not foetal position 😂

BusySittingDown · 09/10/2023 13:49

I suppose I do. I'm curled up right now but I'm not reading (unless MN counts), I'm watching TV.

I'm on the sofa, my upper half leaning against the arm and my legs are bent to the side of me. That's curled up isn't it?

Like the picture that has just been posted.

My hips won’t allow that these days 😂

RedVanYellowVan · 09/10/2023 13:51

I'm a curler-upper. When we were buying a new sofa I did extensive testing for curling up suitability.

Tempnamechng · 09/10/2023 13:51

As @Baneofmyexistence's picture! You need a nice Chesterfield club chair, an open fire or log burner warming a glass of red wine to do it properly! In autumn, curling legs onto sofa is essential if you want to concentrate because it's house spider season. 😱
