Does anyone ACTUALLY ever "curl up" with a book?

Fwendi · 09/10/2023 13:34

I've sat down with a book. I've lain (is that the right word?!) down with a book. I've even stood up with a book.

What I've never done is curled up with one. This seems like a complicated, uncomfortable and counter-productive manoeuvre to me.

Where are all the curler-uppers?

I'm a curler upper, have been for many years. Most of me still loves it, but my knees not so much anymore.

Cazzovuoi · 09/10/2023 13:53

I'm a curler upper too.

Sofa, book, blanket, hot beverage. Bliss.

Fwendi · 09/10/2023 13:56

@Baneofmyexistence and @museumum those are both positions I would read in. But neither of them are what I would see as being curled up!

Both those pictures show people curled up with a book.

GunboatDiplomacy · 09/10/2023 13:59

We had a round window at school where I'd go to read. Like this but with book.

OccultOctopus · 09/10/2023 14:02

I curl up like this, or like this...

In the second picture, I'd tend to rest my book on my legs or have a cushion on my belly to rest the book on. I just don't look anywhere near as glamourous as the oicture Grin

therealcookiemonster · 09/10/2023 14:04

all my life, I have loved reading books mostly lying in bed, with my feet up in the wall.

not too long ago, I found out that both my grandfather and my great grand father also read books like this. and we are a family of intergenerational nerds. genetics is a funny thing!

Sandysandwich · 09/10/2023 14:06

Surely it just means sitting in a leaning or reclined position with your legs bent and up on your seat with you.
As you are curled (body not straight) up (legs elevated, folded in on yourself a bit)
It can't be some horozontal foetal position or all tge people who 'curl up with a cup of tea' would be spilling it all over themselves

VeridicalVagabond · 09/10/2023 14:07

I don't think people generally mean curled up like a hedgehog when they say curled up with a book, just legs tucked up and under or crossed.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 09/10/2023 14:18

Fwendi · 09/10/2023 13:44

But what does curled up look like to people? I see it as kind of a foetal position and I can't imagine where I'd put my book so that I could actually read it!

Like cosleeping only instead of an annoying baby always bothering your nipples there’s a book there instead.

howlismoving · 09/10/2023 14:19

As a curler upper I am interested to know how people read when they aren't curled up? Sat perfectly upright? Or laid down perfectly straight? 😂

Hbh17 · 09/10/2023 14:19

Yes, every day, albeit most of my books are on Kindle.

RichardArmitagesWife · 09/10/2023 14:22

Curled up in a big comfortable chair, or sitting longways on a sofa with my knees up near my chest and the book balanced on my legs.
Ideally with hot drink or wine within reach.

EfficientlyDecluttering · 09/10/2023 14:25

I used to, like the red chair picture. Then I developed severe back pain, went to physio who took one look at me and asked if I sat like that regularly with feet always the same side and told me my pelvis had become tilted to one side resulting in one leg longer than the other. He yanked it all back into place but 20 years later I know I am still a bit wonky and have a few issues with one hip, despite doing my exercises so I have never gone back to sitting like that.

easylikeasundaymorn · 09/10/2023 14:27

I def curl up with a book in my swinging egg chair.
Are you quite tall op? I imagine it would be harder if you were, I'm a short arse so can properly curl up in it like im in a cocoon very easily.

RoachFish · 09/10/2023 14:34

I have a really comfy chair that sits in a corner and it has a reading lamp next to it. It's impossible to sit in any position but curled up in it so I curl up there and read sometimes.

ShinyPikachu · 09/10/2023 14:35

My back, hips and knees don't allow me to sit like that at all now.

If I'm reading I sit on the recliner, feet up, with a cosy blanket over me and a nice hot cup of tea on the table beside me.

MinnieMountain · 09/10/2023 14:42

I agree with PP who say it’s not literally curled. We have an office/reading room. DS and I have chairs that we can either curl up in or stretch our legs out onto a foot rest.

ohsuzannah · 09/10/2023 14:43

Oh yes, I used to until I got arthritis in my knees and hips 😂

purplecorkheart · 09/10/2023 14:43

Yes I do. I have a quite high sided sofa so prop my book on that.

griegwithhimandhim · 09/10/2023 14:44

I used to. Way too old and stiff now though!

CleoCha0man · 09/10/2023 14:48

Doggymummar · 09/10/2023 13:46

Yes I am curled up now, on the sofa electric blanket on feet under my bum

And I'm currently sprawled on my bed trying to cool down after a walk in 23c sunshine. I have envy for your need to be on a heated blanket 😔 My feet are very hot!

Aylestone · 09/10/2023 14:51

BertieBotts · 09/10/2023 13:38

Erm, me!! I am always curled when I'm sitting or in bed, both excellent places to read books.

Same. In the foetal position with pillows arranged in a certain way around my arms to make book holding slightly less awkward

I prop myself up on many pillows on my bed. Don't curl up as such and at the moment half lying, half sitting with left knee bent with foot flat, and right leg stretched out in a ten past two direction.
It's probably not good for my back but it's very comfy 😊

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2023 14:59

Yep I curl up with a book

Love reading as does mini blondes

Legs curled to side or knees bent raised
