Anyone else get really excited at this time of year?

Always been the same for me since I was a little kid.

All of the autumn and Halloween stuff in the shops, the lovely knitwear coming out and the big coats. Even the Christmas stuff in the shops, and I know it's way too early but I was looking at the advent calendars today.

The weather isn't too bad yet so perfect for walking. Looking forward to our little traditions, always watch a spooky series around Halloween, the circus, carving pumpkins, then ice skating, Christmas markets. Not to mention going to a display for fireworks.

I'm not a Summer hater at all but this time of year makes me giddy with excitement.

I think it depends where you live and work. A Londoner in a south facing flat with no outside space and a hot commmute is going to hate summer and love winter.

In summer, on the edge of the Pennines where I live we often have a breezy 25 degrees while London swelters at 30 degrees. I drive in a car with aircon to an office that has aircon. We also don't get the consistent number of hot days in summer that so many mumsnetters complain about. This summer we had a fortnight in June of nice weather, the wettest July for 50 years, a few nice days in August and a hot week at the beginning of September, and that was it.

On the downside we get a lot of rain. The number of reservoirs in my area is evidence of that. Our autumns and winters are damp, gloomy and grey, with the occasional snowfall in winter.

Lol I live in London and commute daily. It doesn't swelter in 30 degree heat for more than a few days here and there.

Stroopwaffels · 06/10/2023 08:35

Nope. People romanticise the idea of scrunching through leaves on a bright crisp morning. The reality is grey and wet. I live in Scotland and the daylight is getting noticeably less, by November it's dark by 4 pm. My kids are too old for Halloween and I have never got the fuss and "giddy" feeling over Christmas which is one massive overblown tat-fest which starts in August.

The period between the clocks going back and the solstice is grim. After that, it's a turn back towards the light and the May/June evenings when it's still light at 9.30 or 10pm which is marvellous.

When I am queen of the world I am going to ban the words "snuggly" and "cosy".

Strawberrypicnic · 06/10/2023 08:40

No not at all, I really feel the cold and dread the months of having to wear 2 jumpers and thick socks indoors even tho we've got the heating on (and still having a wet nose and cold hands even then). Trying to persuade the dog to go out in the rain and having to wipe his paws every time we come back inside. Harder to motivate myself to get out to exercise in the evenings as it feels like 10pm by 6pm. Halloween stresses me out with all the landfill tat everywhere. I love long summer days where you can head out in a cute summer dress and nothing else and the days are so long and full of possibility. I'm going to try to make the best of autumn and winter as I always do, but I'd have summer all year round if I could!

To be fair each season has its own beauty 😍 embrace them all as nothing lasts for long ❤️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/10/2023 08:46

I’ve enjoyed this time of year ever since being a child back in the Dark Ages, when Halloween was hardly a thing at all, but Bonfire Night was super-exciting - then the even more exciting run-up to Christmas.

We don’t have a fireplace but with heating on, curtains drawn, lamps lit and a nice warm throws, our house still feels very cosy. We spent many years in very hot, sunny climates, so I did once expect to find autumn and winter difficult, but I don’t at all.
I still enjoy spring and summer, though. Living for so long with no seasons except hot, and bloody stinking hot, has certainly made me appreciate ours.

Squirrelsnut · 05/10/2023 16:41

I love Autumn's beauty but I feel a bit anxious about the dark, dark months ahead. I get up very early anyway and winter can feel like endless gloom. But I would far rather have distinct seasons than not.

Funny isn't, I get up early too but view the long months of dark mornings as a pleasure because it makes me feel like I REALLY AM up early compared to other people because it's still dark! Makes me feel like I'm getting ahead of the day!! Whereas when it's already light in the mornings I think what was the point in getting up so early 😆

Not everyone can control their temperature in winter. More people die from cold than heat. Many people can't afford heating.

Where was this hot summer of which you speak. We got a few days here and there but mostly it was cool and raining this year?

The UK is never constantly hot in the summer to the extent of discomfort.

@RampantIvy It’s well underway, it’s coming out in handfuls, but sadly not fast enough. I suspect the hot flushes haven’t helped my dislike of summer either!

@ShellySarah I’m well aware of fuel poverty thanks. I’m on pre payment meters for gas & electric and am also a carer for someone on a state pension, so it’s something I juggle with every week. What I don’t understand is the relevance of fuel poverty to my post. The PP asked why people preferred wearing winter clothing, which I answered from a personal perspective. My name isn’t Elsa and I don’t personally have the power to make it winter all year round. Nor am I demanding that fans of summer and/or the heat justify themselves to me.

Where was this hot summer of which you speak. We got a few days here and there but mostly it was cool and raining this year? Well unless you live in the same town as me, it’s reasonably likely that we would have experienced different weather conditions. You know, with that being how weather works. It certainly didn’t feel cool and rainy to me. It felt like a never ending wall of heat hitting me in the face every time I moved.

The UK is never constantly hot in the summer to the extent of discomfort Please do give me a shout in August next year. I’d be quite happy to do a house swap for the month. You’ll be staying in a south facing HA sweatbox flat with no balcony or outside space. The windows that open are quite small but you won’t want them open first thing in the morning or in the evening anyway, as my delightful neighbours smoke weed on a constant basis and the smell comes right in. We can job swap too if you like? You’ll be commuting on a packed bus and then a packed train, to go and work in an office where the air con is knackered, they won’t pay to replace it and the building (which is mostly glass) doesn’t have any opening windows. So your daily surroundings will be, on average, in the low 30s. Ooh, as above, don’t forget to add on the symptoms of menopause. But please, do tell me more about how comfortable it is for you in the summer time.

Nagado · 06/10/2023 09:33

@ShellySarah I apologise for being quite so snarky. Every time there is a thread about liking the winter, there seems to be a horde of posters who take it as a personal affront that some people feel the same about summer as they do about winter. But that’s no excuse and I should have worded my post differently.

JamSandle · 06/10/2023 09:34

I like all the seasons.

MaidOfSteel · 06/10/2023 09:50

Quite the opposite for me. I'm already starting to feel quite down about the short days, cold & damp weather. I wish I could go to sleep and wake up in Spring.

LegendsBeyond · 06/10/2023 09:59

I love this time of year because there’s so much to look forward to. We’re going away in half term, then Bonfire night & all the fun Christmas activities. I prefer the cooler weather as well.

Spottyhousecoat · 06/10/2023 10:02

It is my favourite time of the year as much as I love summer.
Since I was a wee girl there's always been a smell in the evening air from October that me and my dad would talk about my siblings and mum would look at us like we were daft. But every year when I smell it for the first time I always phone my dad to go outside for a sniff, I don't know if it's a scottish thing.
My eldest can smell it too so hopefully she'll do this with me as she get older.

Timetocheersme · 06/10/2023 10:04

I'm reading this thread to encourage myself to like the dark months. I usually walk around with a cloud over me at this time of year. Going to plan some nice simple things in life to try find some joy in the dark cold days.

thecatsthecats · 06/10/2023 10:07

Yup. We always went on a particular holiday at October half term, and it just feels like it kicks off the season! We're expecting our first soon, and he'll fit right into it.

Of course, my husband has added an annual tradition of ignoring my tip on how to get the boiler to kick into gear for when we put the heating on, but I can overlook that so long as I'm tactical and make sure that he's the one that gets the freezing shower!

reluctantbrit · 06/10/2023 10:23

I hate Halloween but otherwise I love October and early November. It's often nice enough to be out, I love how the trees are changing colour.
I can wrap in blankets, drink tea, have the fire on.

But as soon as Christmas is over I really struggle with the cold, damp and endless dark until March.

greyhairnomore · 06/10/2023 10:54

No , the opposite. I love summer.

Me! Love carving pumpkins, cold sunny walks with crisp autumn leaves, making pumpkin and pecan pies, getting the sweets in for the guisers, having nice autumn spiced drinks, getting under blankets cosy to watch Strictly, fireworks displays, slightly spooky movies (I hate horror but love hocus pocus and that kind of genre). Now I have my DD it’s even more exciting, her birthday is this month and also getting her dressed up for Halloween will be so cute! Then from November on I look forward to Christmas.

If you’re into gaming a really cute autumn based game I enjoyed was “Night in the Woods”.

Realisticparent · 06/10/2023 11:12

Halloween wasn't a big thing when I was a child but I still found it exciting. Just seeing the pumpkins and costumes in the shops. We never did trick or treating and my parents often turned off the lights and pretended we weren't home.

I did love watching all the old American Halloween films the big houses and the huge lawns covered with leaves and started going trick or treating or watching a horror scaring myself so I was too scared to get up for a wee once I was a bit older.

For Halloween now we decorate the house, carve pumpkins, go to the spooky circus, treat the dc to sweets and watch a film, go for a night walk to spot bats. I'll still do a some of those things when my dc have grown up. It's wonderful. There's a house nearby that goes all out at Halloween so we always go and have a look to see what else they've added.

It is crisp here today, perfect weather for getting outdoors. We are still a while of January so best to try to enjoy it rather than looking at it as one long approach to Winter. Otherwise it's a long 6 months until Spring.

No one will ever persuade me that Autumn is rubbish.

Definitely plan some things in that you will enjoy. Then you've got a few things to look forward to.

I can totally understand why some people don't like the Autumn/Winter, especially the dark nights which can feel oppressive.

I'm quite grateful for my childish excitement of all things Autumn. Jan/Feb are the worst months for me.

I love Halloween. Going to Whitby this year.

kikisparks · 06/10/2023 11:30

Janieforever · 05/10/2023 21:48

I’ve genuinely never met a person who gets giddy with excitement over a season change, I’m not even sure how to respond to such a thing. I wonder how bored you must be?

By contrast I think it’s lovely. So nice that people have things they get excited about and enjoy, whatever that may be. On the other hand, people who want to shame others for finding joy in the simple things is not so lovely.

cardibach · 06/10/2023 12:00

@Charles11 and @SpicedAppleAndFreshCider fine, but I do t find the rain and cold outside conducive to feeling happy or comfortable.
I feel cosy - ie comfortable and warm and relaxed - when I can leave the house without ruining that feeling.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 12:04

Every time there is a thread about liking the winter, there seems to be a horde of posters who take it as a personal affront that some people feel the same about summer as they do about winter.

@Nagado I think you have just proved my point that it depends where you live and work. I think I am about 200 miles further north than you, rural and at a higher altitude. Our winter nights are longer in the north. It is also colder and wetter in winter (and usually in summer). I drive to work and can have my car at the right temperature for me.

And I can assure you that most of the UK did not have a constant wall of heat this summer.

Just seeing the pumpkins and costumes in the shops.

I don't recall seeing this kind of stuff in the shops in the 1960s. Trick or Treating wasn't a thing either.

It is strangely warm today - cloudy, very windy with spots of drizzle, but my car registered 19 degrees.

cardibach · 06/10/2023 12:10

It's far easier to control being too cold that it is being too hot
For you maybe, @ForeverWinter

I don’t mind heat, I tend to slow down a bit I guess, but it’s fine. When it’s cold I just can’t get warm. My hands and feet are cold. No matter how many layers I put on I don’t get warm, I just feel constrained and uncomfortable. Wool feels horrible where it touches the skin.
Linen trousers and a linen t shirt are cool, loose and comfy.
