Anyone else get really excited at this time of year?

Always been the same for me since I was a little kid.

All of the autumn and Halloween stuff in the shops, the lovely knitwear coming out and the big coats. Even the Christmas stuff in the shops, and I know it's way too early but I was looking at the advent calendars today.

The weather isn't too bad yet so perfect for walking. Looking forward to our little traditions, always watch a spooky series around Halloween, the circus, carving pumpkins, then ice skating, Christmas markets. Not to mention going to a display for fireworks.

I'm not a Summer hater at all but this time of year makes me giddy with excitement.

Absolutely love autumn and winter. Love to weather, coal fires, smell of it, dark evening, dark walks with a torch , seeing no-one.

summer im not keen on it. Sometimes too hot and sweaty, overwhelmed by visitors, caravans, littering.

Nagado · 05/10/2023 21:44

I feel completely energised at this time of year. I can control how hot I get, I can sleep properly, I can have the windows open at night without a million bugs coming in, I can walk further (bits of me don’t work properly and I struggle more in the heat) and I actually get more exercise as I enjoy being outside. I love the colours of all the trees. I love walking in the pouring rain. I love being at the beach early on Sunday mornings, with a flask of hot chocolate, watching all the dog walkers trying to get their dogs out of the sea. There are no wasps. I love seeing my young DN believe that he has tricked me into believing that he truly is a monster/vampire/ghost etc. I love fireworks and bonfires, I love planning for Christmas (which is my absolute favourite time of the year) and having fairy lights on. I love wearing my winter clothes. There is nothing I don’t enjoy about this time of year.

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but we’re so lucky to have the seasons we have.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 05/10/2023 21:47

No. I don't like it. Dark, cold, damp days, small amount of sunlight each day. Cold and dark for the next 6 months, and Spring and Summer miles away. Nowhere open, no day trips to the beach, no nice weeks away, no theme parks or zoos or any family events open. Nothing to do but sit in and try to keep warm. I hate the fucking winter! Hmm

I’ve genuinely never met a person who gets giddy with excitement over a season change, I’m not even sure how to respond to such a thing. I wonder how bored you must be?

DiscoBeat · 05/10/2023 21:59

I love it too. But I feel as though the shops are going so overboard now with 'seasonal' things (like Halloween tea towels, plastic themed bowls (totally fine to use a mixing bowl for the treats, maybe with toy spiders in) And ironically too much of this crap will end up being the reason Autumn isn't cool and cosy any more. We used to enjoy being outside and gather leaves and things. No need to go and get plastic ones!

Liv999 · 05/10/2023 22:05

Yep, love Autumn and Winter so much, love everything about Halloween, my two dds birthdays come after that and then Christmas, best time of the year!

About as bored as you'd have to be to try and piss on someone's happiness I suppose

Could people explain what they mean by it ‘feeling cosy’? I genuinely have no clue. A room can be cosy at any time of year. How is Autumn ‘cosy’? To me it’s just cold and damp and too dark too early.

For me it's having a roaring fire on, can't exactly do that in the middle of summer

Aren't zoos open all year round? I only ever visit my local one in the winter, after the one time I visited in summer and was plagued by wasps every time I opened food or drink outside. And there's loads of family events coming up around here, woodland light trails, pumpkin picking, fireworks displays, Christmas markets etc.

PickAChew · 05/10/2023 22:40

Nope.

RampantIvy · 05/10/2023 22:44

Zoos are open all year. Our nearest one does fantastic winter illuminations.

🎃Have that! It's my seasonal variation of a biscuit...

I much prefer spring. With the nights getting longer and the blossom.

100% agree.

Everyonethinksitstheirdogbarking · 05/10/2023 23:10

@cardibach Its cosy in our house as the log burner goes on, we cuddle up on the sofa with throws, soft pjs & socks, hot choc with marshmallows. I put candles out, some fairy lights, cook nice things-heavier, stodgy but delicious. Curtains shut, strictly on tv.
Summer is hot (love summer too, but it’s not cosy) all doors and curtains open, light and bright for hours, no candles, fire etc, people outside…all great in a different way, but not cosy

Everyonethinksitstheirdogbarking · 05/10/2023 23:11

@DiscoBeat Agree, I saw a gingerbread type make your own haunted house today (we do a gingerbread house at Christmas, def not Halloween!) plus a Halloween tree to decorate..all that spoils it

Suchardchoccy · 05/10/2023 23:15

Yes me too!! I love everything about this time of year and the run up to Christmas. I personally am a summer hater, mainly because of the wasps. But there's also nothing happening in summer it's very boring and tends to drag on a bit

I like a fire. Not allowed where I am. Cosy though?

That’s artificial heat. I hate socks. Can’t cope with stiff on my feet when I’m at home. ‘Cosy’ to me suggests comfort. I’m not comfortable when it’s cold, damp and dark.

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 05/10/2023 23:52

I love all of the seasons for different reasons but I do get a bit fed up with Winter at it's end.

I love Autumn 🍂

Everyonethinksitstheirdogbarking · 05/10/2023 23:52

@cardibach Well yeah, the house has to hopefully be warm and not damp too and then it’s toasty and cosy 🤷🏻‍♀️Sounds quite twee 😂 I agree though it’s not always like that and I’m finding autumn/winters just much colder and not as nice as they were, but I try 😅

It’s warm in my house in summer. Why am I supposed to like artificial and expensive heat more?

This is a really weird comment. How can you be bored if you appreciate a change of season? I honestly think you sound a bit odd. People can appreciate season change whilst living a full life.

Charles11 · 06/10/2023 00:08

@cardibach cosy to me implies that you have warmth and comfort when it's cold outside.

It's when it's raining hard outside and grey skies and you are warm at home looking out at it.

Disturbia81 · 06/10/2023 00:11

Yes I feel energised and awakened. Summer zaps my energy.
