Anyone else get really excited at this time of year?

Always been the same for me since I was a little kid.

All of the autumn and Halloween stuff in the shops, the lovely knitwear coming out and the big coats. Even the Christmas stuff in the shops, and I know it's way too early but I was looking at the advent calendars today.

The weather isn't too bad yet so perfect for walking. Looking forward to our little traditions, always watch a spooky series around Halloween, the circus, carving pumpkins, then ice skating, Christmas markets. Not to mention going to a display for fireworks.

I'm not a Summer hater at all but this time of year makes me giddy with excitement.

I love a crisp autumn day, but they rarely happen where I live.

Where is it still warm today? We have 14 degrees.

Finteq · 05/10/2023 17:04

I used to.

Now I just dread the dark evenings and cold weather.

stayathomer · 05/10/2023 17:04

Ditto here, the smells, the leaves on the trees… this morning I wore a scarf and a hat and felt nicely snug!!!

I love this time in Autumn and up to Bonfire Night but I can’t abide Christmas and the Winter. After Nov 5th, I’m longing for Spring.

I really really detest Christmas and find it an incredibly difficult time of year.

Charles11 · 05/10/2023 17:07

That decaying damp smell in the woods is the worst!
There's nothing like the smell of forest in hot dry climates. It's amazing. The scent of rich wood mingled with the true smell of pines, ferns and other foliage. I could happily live in a log cabin in the woods in those climates.

Love autumn and spring so much. Hate summer and winter. Pulled the coats out this week and washed them all. Going to buy some big throws this weekend can't wait!

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 05/10/2023 17:21

I like living in a country - the UK - where there are noticeably different seasons. And autumn is as lovely as the other seasons.

But I detest Halloween now.

JaneyGee · 05/10/2023 17:39

I love the colder weather. I especially love cold nights as I sleep so much better. And I love putting on a hat and scarf and going for long walks at the weekend – kicking through the leaves, squelching through mud, then coming home to a warm fire. Another thing I love is driving out into the countryside (what's left of it😒), finding an old pub and having a roast dinner in front of a log fire.

I generally re-read certain books in Autumn as well (the Narnia books, Lord of the Rings, M. R. James' ghost stories, Sherlock Holmes, etc). Don't know why, but they are books I associate with the changing weather. And I always re-read Dickens in the run-up to Christmas.

I love Autumn and Spring, for the welcome change they bring. Love the snuggling in on autumn evenings, the smells ....all of it. Winter is good if it's a proper snowy/frosty one but it's often just cold and rainy which is quite bleak but makes the arrival of Spring so welcome. Summer heat can be enervating, I don't do heat well so the drop in temperature and the turning of the leaves to beautiful yellows reds and russet is lovely plus tramping through piles of fallen leaves on a crisp morning is wonderful <leaves thread to dig out winter boots and coat and heads outdoors...>

MushMonster · 05/10/2023 17:43

Autumn is my favourite season indeed!

ShellySarah · 05/10/2023 17:44

No. Cold. Dark. Leading up to hell of sunset before 4pm. Cannot wait for it to be over and on the upward trend after the winter solstice

Vicliz24 · 05/10/2023 17:57

Not me . It's a horrible miserable time . Increasing cold and dark . I only cheer up up again after the shortest day when we begin to turn back towards the light . I'd happily hibernate.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 05/10/2023 17:58

Absolutely the opposite - my mood and energy levels plummet at the end of September! I get SAD and have to work really hard to keep functioning.

Dontcallmescarface · 05/10/2023 18:03

Nope. The though of it getting colder and darker is not one I relish. Even when DD was young Hallowe'en was never a "thing" here as DD didn't particularly like it. Fireworks go off most weekends ( we live near an exclusive country hotel that hosts upmarket/celebrity weddings), here so bonfire night will just be another night for fireworks.
I'd rather have Spring/Summer it's far more cheerful.

AdrianaLaCerva · 05/10/2023 18:04

I love it. Best of all the seasons.

VenusClapTrap · 05/10/2023 15:01

No, it makes me feel slightly depressed. Getting colder, darker, flowers tailing off, leaves falling. Winter is on its way and it’s months till spring. I don’t like it at all.

This is definitely me too!!

Absolutely this.

mamaduckbone · 05/10/2023 18:10

My ds used to be absolutely beside himself at this time of year - Halloween, bonfire night, his birthday in November, advent then Christmas...plus the clocks going back so he would wake up at ridiculous o'clock every day for weeks! It very near killed me.
I do get what you're saying OP, but I struggle massively with the dark mornings and evenings, have terrible circulation and hate being cold, so for me it's mixed with my dread of winter.

ShellySarah · 05/10/2023 18:11

Halloween is just a pumpkin and sweets and kids knocking your door annoying you. It was never a big thing here.

familyissues12345 · 05/10/2023 18:13

Yes! Love it!

Love Halloween and bonfire night, then into "birthday season" in our house - a birthday every couple of weeks until Christmas! Bloody expensive, but I love it

avocadotofu · 05/10/2023 18:13

I feel exactly the same OP. I get so excited about this time of year, I absolutely love autumn and the build up to Christmas!!

Frankinbeans · 05/10/2023 18:13

Yeah I love this time of year. It was raining this morning and I just sat in my tiny wfh office looking out at it. It felt peaceful. I like the dark mornings and the dark evenings.

cardibach · 05/10/2023 18:18

Could people explain what they mean by it ‘feeling cosy’? I genuinely have no clue. A room can be cosy at any time of year. How is Autumn ‘cosy’? To me it’s just cold and damp and too dark too early.

Mimilamore · 05/10/2023 18:35

Not. One. Bit... the hype is nothing like the reality. The winter has been these past few years, dank and gloomy, the "cosy jumpers" are itchy and too hot. The mud everywhere.... the wet benches. The absolutely useless crap in the shops that nobody needs and goes to landfill.
I'm a spring into summer girl all the way...
