Anyone else get really excited at this time of year?

Always been the same for me since I was a little kid.

All of the autumn and Halloween stuff in the shops, the lovely knitwear coming out and the big coats. Even the Christmas stuff in the shops, and I know it's way too early but I was looking at the advent calendars today.

The weather isn't too bad yet so perfect for walking. Looking forward to our little traditions, always watch a spooky series around Halloween, the circus, carving pumpkins, then ice skating, Christmas markets. Not to mention going to a display for fireworks.

I'm not a Summer hater at all but this time of year makes me giddy with excitement.

I like a fire pit when campervanning at night in the dark when it's cooler.

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 06/10/2023 00:16

It was a beautiful day today. Warm and sunny.
I used to get excited about Bonfire Night. There’s something so primal about a big fire and the smell of wood and fireworks in the night air. But its become less of a thing with only large formal events allowed. You can’t even feel the heat from the obligatory roped off area halfway into the next field.

Thens it’s a two month mad rush/ slow groundhog day waiting for Christmas. Which is over in a blink and the endless wait for spring/ light mornings to arrive again.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 06/10/2023 00:19

Yes I love it. I had a pretty miserable time growing up, so Autumn and back to school was always a relief. I always thought it was related to that.

I'm the opposite. I get a feeling of growing euphoria when spring approaches, usually beginning around about the end of February. I love the beginning of new life in the spring, seeing the first green buds on the trees and hedges, with the promise of summer to come.

I don't like endings. I've always preferred sunrise to sunset.

I love Spring too. I think some people just love all of the season changes.

I’ve genuinely never met a person who gets giddy with excitement over a season change, I’m not even sure how to respond to such a thing. I wonder how bored you must be?

Bored? Why would anyone be bored? Life doesn’t stop in the spring or summer. What a strange thing to wonder.

There are an awful lot of people (including on this thread) who suffer from SAD, or who just dread the darkness/cold etc and who long for the summer. There certainly seem to be more of them than there are autumn & winter fans. Have you really never met anyone who feels incredibly happy because the days are getting longer and it’s getting warmer? Ask them to describe what they like about spring and summer and you’ll be likely to get a long and effusive list of things. Do you imply that they are weird for looking forward to a season that makes them happy?

Maybe the best response would be to try and understand that we’re all different and that some of us look forward to the autumn and winter as much as others look forward to spring and summer.

I really love the weather in autumn - chilly and dark in the evenings. It somehow feels like the most natural state for me to experience the world in, like how the weather is 'supposed' to be more so than the other seasons.

I'm aware that makes no sense.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 07:08

hot choc with marshmallows. I put candles out, some fairy lights

Bingo!
All the mumsnet cliches in one sentence.
I find fairy lights and candles hurt my eyes and prefer tea to hot chocolate. Marshmallows can go into room 101 for me.

There are some good things about this time of year - better TV, I sleep better when the nights are cooler, the very rare bright crisp days are lovely - probably because they are so rare.

Roll on spring and summer.

Jifmicroliquid · 06/10/2023 07:11

I love winter clothes and those sunny autumnal days.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 07:23

I'm curious to understand why people prefer being bundled up in thick clothes to wearing lighter weight clothing.

I feel that I can move more easily and feel less constrained in summer clothes.

Musiclover234 · 06/10/2023 07:37

i think the visions of Autumn are often romanticised. Autumn isn’t all pretty crispy leaves on walks and hot chocolate. Quite often the rain is relentless and everything is mulch on the floor. Not a fan of Halloween we were never allowed to do anything for it so I’ve not that enthusiasm

I work condensed hours in a hospital so it’s dark when I leave and dark when I come out. Seeing very little day light. I have SAD so I do struggle with that.

Also work is pretty overwhelmingly busy this time of year ( to be honest it’s not really been any different all year) our patients get very sick with all the viruses doing the rounds. I do seemingly adjust by December and I love Christmas so I think that helps loads.

It's a lot less faff for one.

No matter what I wear in Summer I always end up far too hot with not really any way of cooling down, you reach a point where you just have to melt. I also burn incredibly easily so the minute I have skin exposed I need to be stopping what i'm doing ever 15/20 minutes to keep re-applying suncream. I also just find I get too sticky and sweaty and then either have to change multiple times a day or just be really uncomfortable and slightly damp

In winter, bundle yourself up and you're good to go. If you get too warm take off a layer, if you get cold again put the layer back on. You're out for a walk and there's a sudden downpour ? Chances are you've already got your coat/jacket on so you don't feel it as much. It's far easier to control being too cold that it is being too hot

Realisticparent · 06/10/2023 07:41

I think for me the cosy feeling is, being able to cuddle up with dh in bed, in Summer we are always too hot and sticky but now you get into bed and it's a bit chilly so you get warmed up. Having my lamps on and lighting candles, sure you can do this in Summer but it's not the same.

Going for a walk and getting cold then coming in and warming up.

As I say I'm not a Summer hater and love plenty of things about Summer too. As a pp said we get proper seasons here and really can embrace the changes.

This time of year feels very exciting though. It probably comes from childhood and the build up to Halloween, Bonfire night and Christmas, now I'm doing all of that with my own dc.

I should add a walk on a crisp cold autumn winters day is amazing and feels great. But those kind of days are pretty few and far between in our autumn winters where I live. Not enough for me to love the season change.

CopperLion · 06/10/2023 07:43

Yes! I love the colder weather and ‘new term’ feelings of possibility.

Makingplansfor2029 · 06/10/2023 07:44

No I absolutely hate it, it’s just the lead up to being dark by 4pm which is so depressing

NooNakedJacuzziness · 06/10/2023 07:47

I get really low this time of year. Hate the long dark nights and not a fan of Christmas. I'm happiest in March/April.

PennyPinkPineapple · 06/10/2023 07:51

Easter is my favourite time of year 🐣 I love the lighter evenings, the colours, and all our household have birthdays in April.

But I do get excited at the start of Autumn too. We are lucky to have these changing seasons in the UK even if the reality doesn't meet expectations 😂

For me, it’s because I can control how warm or cold I am and I feel fresh and clean. In the summer, I’m sweaty and sticky and constantly feeling like I need a shower. I’ve got really, really thick hair and that lovely clean hair feeling only lasts until I start getting hot. I always struggle to find clothes within budget that would suit me and keep me from overheating but would also be suitable for a very particular work environment, so I feel as constrained as you do in the winter. It makes me feel utterly miserable.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 08:08

The menopause will sort that out for you @Nagado Sad

Halloween wasn't really a big thing when I was a child in the 1960s @Realisticparent. I remember going to a Halloween party at Brownies, but that was it. It all changes when your DC grow up and leave home. DD is 23 and loves Halloween. She likes it better than Christmas and has either had or been to Halloween parties for years. I'm not sure what she will do this year as all her friends are scattered now.

Not everyone can control their temperature in winter. More people die from cold than heat. Many people can't afford heating.

Where was this hot summer of which you speak. We got a few days here and there but mostly it was cool and raining this year?

The UK is never constantly hot in the summer to the extent of discomfort.

I think it depends where you live and work. A Londoner in a south facing flat with no outside space and a hot commmute is going to hate summer and love winter.

In summer, on the edge of the Pennines where I live we often have a breezy 25 degrees while London swelters at 30 degrees. I drive in a car with aircon to an office that has aircon. We also don't get the consistent number of hot days in summer that so many mumsnetters complain about. This summer we had a fortnight in June of nice weather, the wettest July for 50 years, a few nice days in August and a hot week at the beginning of September, and that was it.

On the downside we get a lot of rain. The number of reservoirs in my area is evidence of that. Our autumns and winters are damp, gloomy and grey, with the occasional snowfall in winter.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 08:27

I prefer sandals to boots @SpicedAppleAndFreshCider, but boots are a necessity where I live, and I am off to buy some today.

RabbitsRock · 06/10/2023 08:30

I can’t be doing with the shorter days but I do love Christmas & mine & DD’s birthdays are both in December too. Not a big fan of Halloween. I used to love bonfire night but now I hate fireworks because of the bunnies - we bring them indoors for a whole week usually as people let off fireworks over several nights.
