Car insurance: is yours higher or lower than last year?

For the same policy.
Because I don't really understand what is going on with mine!

Last year I paid £299 full comp.

Then DD passed her test and I put her on for 6 months, which added £50 to the price - which was a lot lower than I expected at the time.

This year they wanted £750 for the renewal.

DD has gone to uni so I went online to take her off my policy and it dropped....

To £191!

Wow. Wish ours would drop like that.

Just had a quote through for 60% more than paid last year. I presumed it was a ridiculous quote they sent in the hope we wouldn't notice.

No changes. No claims, No reported incidents. No reason whatsoever to go up.
Have tried 3 comparison sites and a couple of individual companies and, shockingly, the renewal quote is actually coming out the best.

This is for me and dh - both being driving over 30 years, no factor that should make it expensive.

I'd very much welcome any suggestions of where else I can look

Bloomingmagnolia · 04/10/2023 01:30

I got 3 points on my license and mine doubled from 500 to just over 1k. Without the points, renewal was 700. It seems everyone has faced massive hikes. I asked a broker why and she said a lot of people made claims, even for minor issues due to cost of living. Previously, they’d have paid for minor things but were now claiming via insurance.

KievLoverTwo · 04/10/2023 02:15

Yours is a very exceptional case. Absolutely all forms of insurance are going through the roof this year.

StarryStarryNightColours · 04/10/2023 02:17

Higher, we ended up changing insurers. Had been with ours for ages, we always do price comparison.

Tallisimo · 04/10/2023 02:19

My renewal cost has gone up £150. In spite of 10 years no claims.I shall be hunting around for something cheaper.

Sisterpita · 04/10/2023 02:26

Mine went up £200 but was roughly the same as the best quote on a comparison site.

Bunny2021 · 04/10/2023 03:41

Ours has doubled in price. No claims, same insurer for years.

even comparison sites are coming out significantly more expensive than last years. It’s so bloody frustrating that they have you over a barrel as you need car insurance but the costs are ridiculous.

My renewal has gone from £210 to £360 but that's before I told them about the 3 pts that DP got recently.

That now means they won't cover us at all (he also has a non fault claim and I have a fault claim) and I have to go back to the comparison sites to see if I can get cover at a decent price.

I will also be looking at whether it is cheaper if I don't put DP on the policy at all as he hardly ever drives my car and I can only think of 1 or 2 occasions where he's had to use it (eg to get to work when his is off the road) rather than he's taken mine for convenience because it's blocking his on the driveway.

The same for his, renewal has gone up from about £400 to £750 (powerful car he now regrets buying) so again, he's going to look at only insuring himself as it appears that having 3 'bad things' on the insurance is adding significantly to the cost.

Oblomov23 · 04/10/2023 06:52

A lot higher. As is Dh's and he's not impressed.

Oblomov23 · 04/10/2023 06:52

Mine has gone up £150. Dh £180.

Downtherivers · 04/10/2023 07:01

Mine has remained the same price (to the pound)

grannycake · 04/10/2023 07:16

I have just received my renewal and it has gone up by £11 from £278 to £289 - Ill take that

OhDoh · 04/10/2023 07:19

ours went up £250 but we changed cars so it's lot newer. I did call the insurance though and got £73 knocked off it. Couldn't get it cheaper on any compare site after that. Home insurance though is another matter.. that's gone up £350 (no new claims..)

VisaWoes · 04/10/2023 07:19

It’s gone up slightly, something like from £215 to £230.

jlpth · 04/10/2023 07:22

Ours has gone up ridiculously. Dh’s from about 500 to 1200.

thank you so much to the lady who, on her phone 6 months ago, shot out of a side road without looking and smashed the side of our car up quite badly and then denied doing it so it’s still an outstanding claim.

UsingChangeofName · 04/10/2023 18:31

This.

I understand the people who risk not having insurance, to some extent. I mean, I absolutely don't condone it, but the fines are less than the insurance.

Ours has gone from £322 to £494 without any change or claim. No change of vehicle, or no incidents, no change of address. Just no reason at all.
I'd definitely take an £11 increase Grannycake

mrsed1987 · 04/10/2023 18:35

Just did mine

Paid 295 last year, renewal was 490. I went somewhere else for 345. I've have no accidents, claims, points and have 19 years NCB. Gone are the days of insurance going down when you have another years ncb

nervesonnerves · 04/10/2023 18:41

Mine was £270 last year and this year £390. I called up and they reduced to £351 over the phone. Worth a call but still huge increase.

Shopaholic100 · 04/10/2023 19:30

Ours have doubled at renewal too, despite no changes and no claims and driving for nearly 30 years. It’s so expensive now.

Whattheduck · 04/10/2023 19:53

My renewal quote was nearly £500 more than the previous year been with them for years no claims so shopped around and changed insurers and am paying less than last year

NotFastButFurious · 04/10/2023 19:54

No change in circumstances and no claims and mine went up by about 50% this year. Even shopping around I couldn’t get anything less and friends have found the same.

itsmylife7 · 04/10/2023 20:00

Would the people who's quotes are similar or not risen let us know the names ?

Mines gone up from £345 to £478 for no reason. I've got 30+ years no claims .
This is with aviva.

zebrapig · 04/10/2023 20:05

Ours went up by £200! Shopped around and managed to get it for only £50 more than last year.

Blarn · 04/10/2023 20:09

This worries me as I passed my test last December and have had my own car and insurance since Feb. Its nearly £800 but with no black box and a car I wanted (5 year old Fabia with asmallengine, nothing swish!) but I felt alright with that as a new driver. I can't afford for it to go up more!

noideabutstilltrying · 04/10/2023 20:21

Our went up this year.

Same with home insurance

There were so many claims logged last year due to the storms etc. staff costs have also risen too.

It's frustrating but we did find a lower cost policy via a comparison site but still paying more than last year.

I'm part of a car owners group and most are struggling with 40% increases in their premiums
