Ashtrays literally EVERYWHERE. There wasn’t one in my bedroom (obviously) but if my mother was in my room for any reason she always had her fags and an ashtray - nowhere was safe. We don’t smoke and don’t allow it in our home (none of our friends smoke anyway).
Also in my childhood home was an oft used “cane” like the sort that a headmaster used and yes it was for physical punishment. I “stole” it not long after I left home and put it on the fire.
