"Horror" movies for 9 year old

Does anyone have any suggestions for scary films for my 9 year old DD. Shes not easily scared but she's begging me to let her watch saw (she saw an ad at her dads) and that is NOT about to happen anytime soon, easily scared or not.

So does anyone have any suggestions for more age appropriate scary films?

Woman in black with Daniel radcliffe (12) but mine have watched it at 9.

RomaniIteDomum · 30/09/2023 18:17

What about some of the classic horror films - Bela Lugosi as Dracula is ace.
I also love Nosferatu for its skin-crawling qualities but silent films aren't for everyone.

Hocus Pocus 1 and 2
Beetlejuice
My stepmother is an alien
Harry Potter series

Can't think of any more. Not necessarily horror but a bit of magic and fantasy?

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 30/09/2023 18:22

Alien/s
Predator maybe
The Lost Boys

The Thing - but watch the Pingu Thingu animation first!

Tulipvase · 30/09/2023 18:25

The hole? Can’t remember what the rating is but I’m sure it’s a 12.

HamHand · 30/09/2023 18:27

The dark crystal and the neverending story had bits that scared me shitless at that age

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 30/09/2023 18:28

Does she watch Dr Who? Quite a lot of those are pretty scary!
My boys have suggested Terminator but I can't remember it that well.

Fibbertygibbert · 30/09/2023 18:29

Would the Adam’s Family count? Krull is a cracking older movie. War of the Worlds or Independence Day? Maybe something not scary but sinister like M Night Shyamalan’s Signs. Good luck 🕸

PureAmazonian · 30/09/2023 18:33

Your DD sounds similar to me at her age. I'm 30 and still trying to find a movie that scares me.

HerRoyalStressHead · 30/09/2023 18:57

Thank you! Some fab suggestions here.

She already watches Dr who and is obsessed.
War of the worlds creeps me out. Its the noise the tripods make. It goes right through me Grin I'm fine with every other film though.

Watership down is traumatising...

The house with a clock in its walls is a good shout

MariePaperRoses · 30/09/2023 19:01

Jumanji.
Beetlejuice

Alargeoneplease89 · 30/09/2023 19:18

The mummy
Signs
The woman in black
The village
Critters

SurrenderAt20 · 30/09/2023 19:22

I agree with all of the suggestions above (the gits stole all my ideas!) but I would also add the Underworld series if she is into vampires and werewolves.

Also if she enjoys reading I would HIGHLY suggest the House of Night series (also vampire themed) as that has been my favourite YA book series for the last 15-odd years. I read James Herbert as a child because my mum had all his books and they creeped me out too, but the film versions are usually shite.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 30/09/2023 19:22

Grizzly tales for gruesome kids. A series rather than a film but I remember being terrified of it when I was a kid

covetingthepreciousthings · 30/09/2023 19:24

Night books on Netflix?

LegendsBeyond · 30/09/2023 19:28

The Birds by Hitchcock. I loved it at that age.

FatCatatPaddingtonStation · 30/09/2023 19:34

Careful with Ghostbusters, Bill Murray is very sexually harassing. I watched it with my DS and had a chat to him about it.

DS also loves horror and is completely unfazed. He is 12 and I have watched Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream movies. He just finds them all funny. I don’t let him watch them alone, and check in with him after every murder! I wouldn’t let him watch Saw/ Hostel , stuff like that.

Ghost Ship, Orphan and The others too.

Although he didn’t watch them at 10 but I think they’re pretty harmless.

Boopeedoop · 30/09/2023 19:52

Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp

Boopeedoop · 30/09/2023 19:59

Corpse bride.
Death becomes her.
Casper
The little vampire
Spooky kids

Vetoncall · 30/09/2023 20:00

Super 8 maybe? It's a sci-fi thriller rather than horror but has a 'monster', strange happenings etc. There are some deaths in it just to be aware in case you haven't seen it. The main characters are a group of kids so your DD might like it. It's a great movie!

chuffachuffchuff · 30/09/2023 20:01

I watched beetle juice at that age

flexigirl · 30/09/2023 20:10

Jaws - I watched it when I was six and loved it

LegendsBeyond · 30/09/2023 19:28

The Birds by Hitchcock. I loved it at that age.
