"Horror" movies for 9 year old

HerRoyalStressHead · 30/09/2023 17:31

Does anyone have any suggestions for scary films for my 9 year old DD. Shes not easily scared but she's begging me to let her watch saw (she saw an ad at her dads) and that is NOT about to happen anytime soon, easily scared or not.

So does anyone have any suggestions for more age appropriate scary films?

Jaws definitely. I'm a huge horror fan and DS got the bug off me, that was the kind of thing we watched together at his age. Gremlins was another one. The older films from the 70s and 80s are better to introduce to kids to start their horror journeys as they're campy rather than scary, modern films are much gorier.

The old Alfred Hitchcock shorts are always on Sky. My kids love them. They are more thriller but harmless enough.

I'm going to vote for Eerie Indianna and Are You Afraid of the Dark. Both are tv shows from the 90s

Careful with Ghostbusters, Bill Murray is very sexually harassing. I watched it with my DS and had a chat to him about it.

DS also loves horror and is completely unfazed. He is 12 and I have watched Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream movies. He just finds them all funny. I don’t let him watch them alone, and check in with him after every murder! I wouldn’t let him watch Saw/ Hostel , stuff like that.

Ghost Ship, Orphan and The others too.

Although he didn’t watch them at 10 but I think they’re pretty harmless.

I loved horror from a young age and I watched those at a similar age to your DS too, Jeepers Creepers was another and I loved the nightmare on elm street films, I had the box set. Think I was about 11 when I first watched Halloween! On video tape without my mum knowing, I was terrible.

NB Gremlins dishes the dirt on Father Christmas if you'd like to maintain the magic a little longer!

HerRoyalStressHead · 30/09/2023 20:45

Thank you so much! Some great suggestions. She is already aware that father Christmas isn't real so that's no big deal. She figured it out pretty young bless her.

Eight legged freaks is fun!

Fahbeep · 30/09/2023 22:17

Spirited Away.

barbieofswanlake · 30/09/2023 22:51

Return to Oz. Watch it yourself first if you haven't! Terrifying.

Its5656 · 30/09/2023 22:58

The Hole 2009
Hubie Halloween with Adam Sandler
Also I noticed that 1992 Ghostwatch has been added to Prime, I was 10 when this aired and it scared the crap out of me.

HerRoyalStressHead · 01/10/2023 07:21

I'm severely arachnophobic so I think 8 legged freaks would scare me more than her (she is not scared of spiders at all and wants a pet one the weirdo that she is)
She loves spirited away
Oooh she's not seen return to oz or the hole thank you!

Scary stories to tell in the dark is definitely the scariest of the movies mentioned. We watch a lot of horror, and that one caused some issues at around nine. Anything with Jack Black is amazing.

Does Coralline count as horror?

frivlot · 01/10/2023 08:15

netflix series creeped out is quite good

HippyChickMama · 01/10/2023 08:34

Dd (10) likes 'horror', she has enjoyed
Edward Scissorhands
Jaws
Lost Boys
Poltergeist

She also loves old Hammer Horror, anything with Price, Cushing and Lee. House on Haunted Hill is a particular favourite but she also likes Dracula, Frankenstein etc

SleepyMathematician · 01/10/2023 08:44

I recently saw Haunted Mansion at the cinema and it’s either just come out or is about to come out on Disney Plus if you have access to that. I like proper horrors so was a bit unsure but adult DD and I agreed it was an enjoyable watch. It’s a 12 but there were some children around 8-10 in the cinema and I’d happily let a 9 year old see it, if they didn’t mind slightly scary things.

SleepyMathematician · 01/10/2023 08:48

My DD loved horror from your DD’s age too and now she watches all the horrors with me at the cinema so you have good times to come when she’s older if you like them too!

RicherThanYews · 01/10/2023 08:55

Don't let your 9 year old watch Poltergeist, I say that as someone who has been in love with horror since I was 2. That film instilled a serious phobia of the dark.

NewDogOwner · 01/10/2023 08:56

Don't Be Scared of the Dark with Katie Holmes. It has a little girl as the protagonist and the scary creatures are little evil elf like creatures so it is as childfriendly horror as you can get. But it is properly scary.

Coraline. Home for extraordinary children. Nightmare before Christmas. Frankenweiny

Ahhhh Frankenweenie is such a lovely film

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/10/2023 08:58

Paranorman is excellent

HerRoyalStressHead · 01/10/2023 09:05

Thank you some more great ideas! Looks like we'll be having a "mooky month" (DD may be 9 but she has a speech delay due to selective mutism so she can't say spooky, hence mooky)

GingerLiberalFeminist · 01/10/2023 09:08

reelcat · 01/10/2023 09:23

The burbs

Vestito · 01/10/2023 09:47

Gremlins warning - it has a Santa reveal which I had forgotten - just in case anyone has a late believer!

HappyToSmile · 01/10/2023 17:25

When I was her age, there was a film called "watcher in the woods". Reckon that would fit her bill, although it may not have aged well!!
