I did one of those “look something up without knowing it could mean something else” things..

Very dull amazon search for a liner for my airfryer. The one recommended to me doesn’t fit the kind I have, but has nodules/longish protruberances/bits sticking out, so the food isn’t sitting in any juice/oil.

So I typed in “air fryer liner silicone… tentacles”?! no, I don’t know why. But there you go. Apparently some women like (or designers think that women like) sex toys shaped/patterned to look like octopus tentacles.

What a start to the weekend.

..and my MN name is a completely random choice, made some time ago, in my never ending quest to stay away from stuff written over the past 15 years!

I've learnt things I'd rather not know from what I think are very innocuous searches. Thanks for the reminder to be very careful when searching for Bath toys...

Well, it’s not exactly a new thing, OP. That famous Hokusai print ‘Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife’ (of a woman and two octopuses (octopi?) getting it on) is from 1814. And the translation of the text (what the octopuses and the woman are supposedly thinking) is pretty graphic…

Which of course I've now had to Google.

I mean.... wow

Well, I wasn’t posting a photo, as I was on a gardening thread earlier, where people post photos of their gardens, and one photo was obscured and labelled ‘Sensitive content’ (and turned out to be of a couple of scarlet dahlias!), so I thought the platform might shut down in shock if someone posted an image of octopus cunnilingus, even if it’s also a famous 19thc Japanese artwork…

DustyLee123 · 30/09/2023 10:16

Oh dear, I’ll never see calamari in the same way again !!!

Indeed.

I'm actually fairly sure I've seen that before but my brain has clearly put it in a file marked 'do not recall' and left it there.

CurlewKate · 30/09/2023 10:30

Has anyone been around here long enough to remember "never google dragon butter"? 🤣

Slothlikemum · 30/09/2023 09:23

I Googled it as well. 😱

BaronessBomburst · 30/09/2023 10:34

Yes! There was even a poster with that as her user name.
I googled it. <sigh> I'm still carrying the scars.

HurdyGurdy19 · 30/09/2023 10:41

When my daughter was about 9 or 10, she liked a range of cartoon-y "stuff" called Groovy Chic.

I thought I'd go online and see if I could print off some colouring pages etc for her.

Well now! My innocent Google search for Groovy Chic took me to a very pornographic page, with multiple pop ups. I couldn't get rid of them, and had to resort to just switching the computer off at the wall.

And then having to warn my husband when he got in from work that there may be some inappropriate stuff when he went online, and not, under any circumstances, to put the computer on with any children in the room.

AmyandPhilipfan · 30/09/2023 10:53

I learnt from Mumsnet never to Google dragon butter or blue waffle, and from the warnings I read on here I never have Googled them!

Years ago my friend had a 2 bed flat and had had the cot in her room but when the toddler was moving into a bed she was having to share with her older brother until they could sell and move somewhere bigger.

Anyway, my friend asked me for bedroom design ideas so I Googled something like 'toddler girl and older brother room share ideas' and then got warning notices saying I might be searching for something inappropriate! I quickly deleted that search and hoped it hadn't been flagged up anywhere!

CurlewKate · 30/09/2023 10:54

@BaronessBomburst Yes-me too. It was ages before I actually googled it. Still wish I hadn't!

IHeartGeneHunt · 30/09/2023 10:55

I once tried looking up a book I had as a little girl. I thought it was called "She Wanted a Pony" and put that into Google.

I did not get what I was looking for AT ALL.

The octopus print features in Mad Men a few times. 🤭

Freezingcoldinseptember · 30/09/2023 10:57

Can't imagine all the ads you Googler's will be getting any time soon!!
Keep your phone away from dc's I reckon!

God, remind me never to google Jill Enjoys Her Ponies (which is an actual novel by Ruby Ferguson)…

Years ago when we first got dial up internet at home I was a teenage boy zone fan. I forgot they'd have an Irish web page so innocently typed in boyzone.co.uk and got a lot if images that 14 year old me was not expecting 🤯

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 30/09/2023 11:17

I collect vintage toys and was looking for a website to help me gauge how old they were. Do not google "How to date a teddy bear".

ThatsMeTold · 30/09/2023 11:21

I saw a wooden play structure /climbing frame in the garden centre, I made a note of the name so I could Google when I got home.

The company was called Blue Rabbit. 🤦🏼‍♀️

RumNotRun · 30/09/2023 11:35

When I was at school I googled a band I liked. They'd just changed their name so I decided to also search on the previous name. My search got blocked by the firewall and the Head of Year ended up having a talk with me. The band's previous name was Manhole.

IntoDeepBlueSea · 30/09/2023 11:36

Glad it's not just me.... and yes, now you mention it, the Japanese myth does ring a bell, but I'd obviously packed it well away. Until now.

LOL at "how to date a teddy bear".. had to say it over a couple of times before I realised what the issue might be!

Despite my childish need to immediately do everything in warned off, I've managed to avoid googling dragon butter for, what, 10 years?! I'm really not tempted now.

Same. Also, ended up looking at pics of people who have had the painting tattooed on them. 😬😳
