My goodness this house has potential….

Another bit of property porn. It could be magnificent if done properly, but suspect it will just end up looking generically blingy, with loads of very expensive flash furniture. I’ve looked at so many gorgeous properties in posh bits of London and none of them ever seem authentic. Just bland and shiny with no colour or texture but this is so different. Reminds me of that museum in London Dennis Severs house I think.

It was also used as a filming location for Brideshead revisited!!!

AutumnSalad · 29/09/2023 13:43

The finish isn’t great, when you look at the paintwork. I love the green and the panelling, and the bare floors. To really bring out the best it would need an awful lot though, more than it looks. Stripped back and repainted, and all those weird pipes! The kitchen needs completely re-done.

Love the house though. It feels as if I’m looking and an older gentleman’s abode, someone who has masses of books and maybe a lawyer or someone.

10 Grimmauld Place, that you?

It needs a bloody good clean and tidy up, the strong colours aren’t exactly to my tastes (altho I am by no means an all grey everything bod) and the bedrooms and kitchen are awful, but it is a lovely building, those beautiful windows and high ceilings are to die for 😍

Floopyfloop · 29/09/2023 13:52

According to Wikipedia The magazine “Nation & Athenaeum” was published from the house in the 1920s.It eventually merged and became the New Statesman.

Fascinating!

wherethewaterisdarker · 29/09/2023 13:53

It has beautiful bones but slightly odd mix inside of quite museumy almost (shooting locations perhaps? Nice but a bit stuffy) and far more scruffy house share-y bits.. wonder how it’s been used!

London house: monthly mortgage is > half of my salary (gross)

grade II, could it be turned into flats?

LaurieFairyCake · 29/09/2023 14:40

I don't think anything needs doing to it either, it's completely gorgeous

IhearyouClemFandango · 29/09/2023 14:43

I love it. The outdoor space makes me feel a bit 'prison yard' though.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/09/2023 15:04

It's a lovely house but whoever lives in it right now hasn't got a clue how to present it. So much clutter, piles of paperwork, boxes and ugly stuff everywhere! The kitchen is awful too... hopefully someone with taste will buy it and give it the love it deserves

GasDrivenNun · 29/09/2023 15:09

Layout is rather weird.
If you're in bedroom 4 have to go through bedroom 2 to get to the bathroom. Overall it's too disjointed and lots of stairs when you want to go to the loo or to the kitchen.
Roof terrace is so lovely.
Not a fan of old houses to live in. Too cold in winter and v expensive to heat. Grade 2 listed would really put me off.

heartofglass23 · 29/09/2023 16:18

Oh that Bakewell house looks like a great before for HUTH.

It’s just a bit untidy for my liking. Itching to put stuff away.

You are aware that people tend to take their belongings with them when they move?

Millybob · 29/09/2023 18:08

It is gorgeous, and potentially could like some of those houses in Spitalfields - decluttering would be a good start!

queenofthewild · 29/09/2023 18:28

I love it. Especially the piano. Although I notice a lot of plug in radiators, so I suspect it's a bit drafty.

Zoomed in and spotted this in the kitchen. Looks like old signage taken as a souvenir from the old BBC television centre, so I suspect it belongs to an aging BBC presenter.

My goodness this house has potential….

The above are on my current doer upper wishlist. The second is two Airbnbs currently and is on a lane used in the 1995 Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice (the inn at Lambton for anybody interested).

I didn't know that was Longnor - at the time it was on tv and I was obsessed with it I lived a few miles down the road in Onecote!

ShowOfHands · 29/09/2023 18:40

I stayed in the Airbnb a few weeks ago and said to DH that it looked like a P&P filming location. I then idly googled P&P filming locations and it turned out I was literally looking at one of them out of the bedroom window!

Check out Nigel Slater's house on Instagram, he lives locally and his house is gorgeous.

Nigel Slater doesn't live locally. He lives in Highbury. Which might be close mile wise for most places but in London, it's 10 miles away.

londonmummy1966 · 29/09/2023 18:50

I think that the owner might be a musician - looks like a harpsichord rather than a piano to me and the piles of books in the study look like music from the size of them. There are a few (wealthy) musicians in Clerkenwell.

@Janieforever If it is a Georgian house as I suspect then wigs were just the fashion at the time but that also could well have been their profession given it's a swish residence :)

Wigs were out of fashion by the Georgian era. My bet’s on an owner in the legal profession. It’s a beautiful house.
