Anyone else horrified at this?

Gymnastics Ireland in racism row after girl skipped in medal ceremony

Olympic champion Simone Biles condemned the 'heartbreaking' incident and said she had sent a video of support to the young girl after her parents reached out to her.

Why not now?

Did you ask the same question about those choosing to raise issues now with Russel Brand, why now? Or is it because race is the issue

The whole premise of the 'Me Too' initiative is that people who have been affected by any issue/ previous abuse can raise this with no one questioning them on 'why now'?

Your comment is totally unacceptable!

I read that Simone Biles messaged the little girl in 2022

I'm in Ireland. I do personally think that there is a lot of racism in Ireland. Black people that I've talked to here have told me so, for a start.

Im not racist. How dare you call me that. It's so easy to just say to some one "you're a racist". Im not. My best friend is black. My dear beloved niece is mixed race. My brother's girlfriend is black.

I'm well aware that racism goes on. However I'm also allowed to point out the other side of this.

Let ne ask you this question: if the child had been white, would this be in the news? The same action would have happened. A teacher forgettinf to give a child a medal. If the child had been white this would not have been in the news, the same action - to a black child makes the news.

I think its important to look at it from both sides. If the child had been white ,we woukd have just said oh the teacher forgot. If the child is black - we say it's racism.

Its hard to know if it's racism or not. I certainly dont know what the person was thinking and I don't assume to know.

November2024Mummy · 24/09/2023 19:40

@Mooshamoo your bestie, husband and niece are black. Right, ok.

A black child was singled out and ignored and not given a medal. It looks very much like racism. The fact that even the Daily mail comments think it's racism speaks volumes.

Yes it could be racism. As I've said earlier in this thread, I do personally think that a lot of racism goes on in Ireland.

I dont think I'm a racist. I've loads of black friends, I've never said anything nasty to a black person ever.

However as the race that have historically hurt black people, Im white, i suppose mo white person can just say I'm not racist. We probably all have to look deeper and see if there is any subconcious racism in us. I don't think I am rqcist, but I care about black people enough to never assume that I'm not racist enough. There is probably always further work I can do on myself

If it wasn't racism they would have explained the situation from their view. Eg. There was a mix up and that child's name wasn't read out as they'd been put on the list for a previous ceremony or whatever. There was no alternative put forward. No attempt at a defense. So there wasn't one.

I on the other hand think its immature and aggressive to shout at someone "you're a racist."

I have said nothing racist on this thread. Ever.

Show me where I have said one single thing that is racist

Jesus Christ. Of course some of my good friends are black. A good few of my own family members are mixed race actually.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 24/09/2023 20:54

That video is upsetting. The little girl's teammates were obviously as confused as she was. I think if she were my daughter I'd have run over to tell the official she'd left out my daughter.

Mookie81 · 24/09/2023 21:02

Bingo! Any more I've missed?

Mooshamoo · 24/09/2023 21:04

What's your point?

You should take this opportunity to reflect upon why your initial response was to minimize a display of overt racism.
If you do in fact have so many black people in your life, you should know better.

Kjo1977 · 24/09/2023 21:43

You’re completely wrong. There is no other side to this. This is absolutely 100% blatant racism. Being related to black people doesn’t absolve you from being ignorant, if they are genuinely beloved then do better! Speaking as a mixed race woman, if my white relatives ever used me to turn a blind eye to such obvious racism then I’d be livid!

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 24/09/2023 21:54

Catleveltired · 24/09/2023 10:55

The Irish gymnastics response was pisspoor. That poor child. Gobsmacking in this day and age.

So backwards. Disgusting behaviour. They should be so ashamed.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 24/09/2023 21:58

"So yes, it does happen all the time. Some people have difficulty believing that such blatant racism could occur because they could not imagine themselves, or any of their friends and family, deliberately missing a child out because they were black"

This. Sadly.

shams05 · 24/09/2023 11:04

It's heartbreaking.
She's so excited, you can see her huge smile. the poor kid that official just left her out and walked off with one medal in her hand. It can't have been anything other than racism, it's so purposely done.

That's what I was thinking. But would that woman really have the balls to walk off with one medal still in her hand? With it being so blatantly obvious what she was doing?

That is gallus.

And to do it to a child? That is some staggeringly deep rooted racism.

The video I have seen cuts off when the woman moves onto the next girl. The only way I can envision it is the woman apologising for the omission, and going back to give it to the girl she missed.

To hear that she just carries on and then walks off still with one medal....awful. Truly awful.

I am all for giving people the benefit of doubt but it looks as if the 2 other girls pointed out what happen and were ignored too.

Even if it was not "visable" (with the child being the only one of a differrent race) she steps and touches her chest so it clear she has not got a red ribbon and a medal when all the other girls do.

the fact that the adult had to skip her and looks back and half waves the hand with the awards shows she is aware of the girl.

😳How horrible!

Poor love, there's nothing they can say or do to make up for treating her this way.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 24/09/2023 22:31

Sorry, no time to rttt.

My blood boiled when I saw this. That poor darling waiting in line, so proud of herself. I can't stand injustice, particularly when it comes to a child being left out.

I'm so sorry for her and her parents.

Racism is a truly ugly beast.

Moonwatcher1234 · 24/09/2023 22:38

So sad - poor little girl. I just finished watching King Richard and to think that, years after he and Venus and Serena smashed so many boundaries and preconceptions, this kind of nonsense still goes on is pretty sad.

FoodCentre · 25/09/2023 07:47

If we were white, correct, we wouldn't say it's racism. Because we wouldn't expect a white Irish woman to be racist to a white Irish girl in a line up of all white Irish girls.

I like to think critically and not believe what everyone else is saying. It sometimes you have to believe what you're seeing because it's right in front of you.
