Anyone else horrified at this?

Gymnastics Ireland in racism row after girl skipped in medal ceremony

Olympic champion Simone Biles condemned the 'heartbreaking' incident and said she had sent a video of support to the young girl after her parents reached out to her.

There's an actual video you can watch

I believe it was sarcasm

Unconscious bias is not a synonym for subtle or accidental.
Overt, deliberate racism isn't necessarily a series of independent choices. It's often so ingrained that the individual doesn't even think about what they're doing or how it might look. This is not the same thing as unconscious bias.

@Oliotya Oh no, I didn't mean to suggest that unconscious bias manifests in subtle behaviour. I was replying to @Kjo1977 who suggested that the official believed she was being subtle. I replied to say I didn't see how she could have believed that, because what happened was the very opposite to subtle.

I take your point about deliberate racism.

I know I don't have the experience of racism that pps do on here. I am white Irish. What I can tell you is that amongst the majority of Irish people, especially educated people, showing racist behaviour is considered taboo. Nobody I know would dream of telling racist jokes for example, they would be thought less of if they did. There are Irish people who would of course, don't think I'm trying to deny that. But it's not considered acceptable behaviour by most. As I said being racist is seen as taboo by the majority. That’s my experience and why I was so surprised as well as appalled by what happened the little girl.

I think unconscious bias is a much bigger problem for the majority. Being racist without realising if that's possible. Stereotyping. Are you saying you'd call some of that deliberate racism @Oliotya? Maybe I have the wrong language? I will read the books suggested upthread don't worry.

Unfortunately, racism towards Irish travellers (who are a separate ethnic group) can be more overt here in Ireland. (I'm using the term racism in the broader, legal sense here. I know we're the same race.)

Sorry @Kjo1977, cross posted.

KandieKaine · 29/09/2023 12:09

Should the police be involved and prosecute?

Should the police be involved and prosecute?

I think so yes. It's clear racism.

Mooshamoo · 29/09/2023 12:11

Can you be prosecuted for non verbal racism? I didn't know that

KandieKaine · 29/09/2023 12:21

This happened in March 2022 . Why is it a big issue now and not then ? The people concerned have apologised. The woman concerned has resigned What more do they want to happen ?

You to stop apologising and sticking up for racists would be a start, wouldn't it?

KandieKaine · 29/09/2023 13:00

I'm not apologising I'm asking a question

Being cancelled for asking a question? 😂

Kjo1977 · 29/09/2023 14:44

I don’t think you can. It’s why it needs to change. People know that verbalising racism is against the law. It’s how you end up with situations like this. And then of course, they’re backed up by other closet racists because “they didn’t do anything wrong, it was an accident “ blah blah blah.

Or, in the case of @KandieKaine , who based on her last two posts, is clearly a class act, 'it's too late to complain about it now!'

Every excuse under the sun from these anti-anti-racists.

Mooshamoo · 29/09/2023 16:15

The parents have spoken out today. They are on the news.

@thedancingbear

I didn't say that . Please don't put words in my mouth .

Kjo1977 · 29/09/2023 17:02

They wouldn’t pick apart a case of sexism like this. It’s amazing how these “I’m not racist butsssss” put so much time and effort into trying to prove that something isn’t racist. What is it these days with people wanting to act like a racist, have racist views, support other racists, ignore racism, gaslight and pretend it doesn’t exist BUT NOT ACTUALLY BE CALLED A RACIST!

I think you make a very good point. People on mumsnet tend to be pretty good, as a group, at picking up on sexism and misogyny, or male violence against women and girls, but it feels like there is a massive blind spot (at best) to racism. And unconscious bias is still racism. Insidiously so. I'm sure I miss spotting lots of racism happening, because of my white privilege, but when lots of people who have themselves directly experienced racism are saying "look at that, that is racism!" then it is surely incumbent upon us to listen, then to try to apply that lesson learned the next time.

Myfabby · 29/09/2023 17:23

I agree mostly. although you have the odd one saying NOT ALL MEN when we are talking male violence.

It's actually depressing to think there are grown women who devote copious amounts of time to muddying up clear waters, trying to justify racism against a 10 year old with the most asinine excuses- overlooked/no for participation medals/mixed up in rows, and the latest- why is it only coming to the public now..

I wonder how such people raise their own children. just really sad.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 29/09/2023 17:24

@Myfabby

You have spoken so much sense on this thread 👏

SofiYol · 29/09/2023 19:45

Oh come on! If you’re handing out medals to a group of children and you’ve got one left at the end, you double check that every child has got a fucking medal!

Its racist.

Every single person who saw it and didn’t intervene is racist.

Every single person who is trying to excuse what happened to this little girl is at best a racist apologist or at worst racist themselves. That might be a bitter pill to swallow but you are arguing with black women who are literally TELLING you that this happens, they live it every single day.

Until people start seeing what is right in front of them and calling it out every single time, nothing will change.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 30/09/2023 09:34

The look of hurt and confusion is etched on her little face, bless her.

It broke my heart.

Kjo1977 · 30/09/2023 17:09

Looks like it’s starting to get treated a lot more seriously than it was initially- thank goodness

Eobord · 01/10/2023 16:47

That’s sad
