Anyone else horrified at this?

Olympic champion Simone Biles condemned the 'heartbreaking' incident and said she had sent a video of support to the young girl after her parents reached out to her.

"Behave better in public". What does that even mean? Are we supposed to be satisfied with displays like this because it could be worse? What does racism need to look like before you would recongise it?

"Behave better in public". What does that even mean?
It means people behave differently in public. I think most people know this and studies have shown it time and again. Even having a picture of a pair of eyes over a donation box in an empty room means people donate more.
Are we supposed to be satisfied with displays like this because it could be worse?
Of course not! You misunderstand me if you think that's what I'm saying.
What does racism need to look like before you would recongise it?
I do think the official was racist and I said that. I suggested she may have been acting subconsciously rather than deliberately as I was surprised she'd self-sabotage her career by openly behaving so hatefully.

Cherrythomasina · 26/09/2023 11:48

I actually said there was no excusing unconscious racism @Myfabby. It was not an excuse. I suggested the official 's racism may have been subconscious rather than deliberate. I did not say that made it any better and that's not what I think.

Kjo1977 · 26/09/2023 16:42

It’s lovely of you to recommend the book but we both know they don’t want to read it. “I’m not racist but…….. I’m actively seeking out posts about this horrid incident so I can tell people that the lady is most likely completely innocent and anyone who disagrees with me is divisive and not letting me have my right to free speech.” I mean, COME ON! They want to turn a blind eye to BLATANT racism AND try and gaslight people.

Cherrythomasina · 26/09/2023 18:28

Oh for heavens sake!

Kjo1977 · 26/09/2023 20:14

Exactly this but for different reasons. Guess you’ve had years of making excuses, it must be frustrating when playing devils advocate is called out for what it really is!

Cherrythomasina · 26/09/2023 21:01

I don't agree with trial by media/social media @Kjo1977. That doesn't make me racist whatever you think.
Seriously @Myfabby this feels like a pile-on to me. And I really don't think what I've said warrants it.

Well, spare a thought for how the little girl felt.
How her parents felt like failures
How it felt waiting for months for an apology.

Yet you come and minimise it with distinctions of conscious/unconscious/blatant racism
I'm not going to engage with you anymore.

Cherrythomasina · 26/09/2023 22:27

Of course I've spared a thought for the little girl.

Why does saying racism might be subconscious minimise it? It doesn't minimise it in my view. I've already said that but you are determined to misunderstand me. So be it. But please remember you are not actually the mind reader you think you are.

Kjo1977 · 27/09/2023 09:12

@Cherrythomasina you are literally doing everything I would expect someone like you to do. The “pile on” is people expressing their strong opinions about racism. This isn’t a subject we can all “agree to disagree on, have a lovely day”. A racist (not referring to you but the medal lady) almost always gets away with their actions because of people who insist on actively explaining it away. This poor little girl hasn’t seen justice so if trial by social media makes people aware then so be it. If you want to actively defend these people then don’t start moaning when people push back. Like I said, those days are long gone when white people get to decide what racism looks like. Should men be able to dictate what sexism looks like? Maybe you need to take a look at what really motivates you to play devils advocate in these situations.

Cherrythomasina · 27/09/2023 09:44

@Kjo1977
Someone like me?
But you don't know me at all.
I don't know how you've extrapolated from what I actually said to thinking I said racism is defensible?
I'm not sure where you think I've 'explained it away'?
I haven't been defending racism at all.

Can you point out where I said what the official did was okay please? Because I'm baffled as to why you think I'm defending racism.

I did say I didn't like trial by media/social media and I don't, but that doesn't imply I approve of what's happened in any way.

I also said I thought the official may have been acting in a subconsciously racist manner rather than making a deliberate decision to exclude the girl. I thought that only because I can't see that she'd actively set out to destroy her own career. I also said that this type of racism is equally bad. I didn't defend her.

Again, can you point out where I'm supporting racism please? Because I don't support it and am very confused as to why you think otherwise.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 27/09/2023 12:54

What she did was a racist act. That's the point. If I say something /do racist, it doesn't matter if I didn't know it was racist or I'm not a consciously racist person, the word/act is still racist and needs addressing which is exactly what the poor girl's parent's have done.

Yes I agree.
I never said it wasn't a racist act though? I agree it was.

@Cherrythomasina

Your posts on this thread are really draining tbh. Very self centred.

You aren't racist, we get it.

What happened to that poor beautiful child was.

End of story.

Shall we leave the thread there?

About her and the need for justice in this world.

Yeah I'll leave it there @Vintagecreamandcottagepie. You can report to MN if you think I'm a troll @Myfabby.

Quite sick of being called names at this stage. You should look at your behaviour before judging others.

You've made yourself the victim on a thread about racism towards a small child. Impressive.

JTK50 · 27/09/2023 16:34

This is in Saudi, I can't find the long video, the racism here to the black Saudi children is heart breaking, he only adresses the lighter skin children, the kids are orphaned. Black kids first experience of racism is at shcool from teachers who ignore them, overlook them etc

Saudi Official Accused of Racism

JTK50 · 27/09/2023 16:36

In the original video, everyone in the audience claps for the children recieving the award, except for the black kids, it's silence.

Cherrythomasina · 27/09/2023 17:01

This thread will have absolutely no effect on that little girl's life as you know.

Look, I'm really not too bothered by the name-calling, I'm not a victim. But you might take a minute to reflect on the fact that at least 3 people have been bullied off this thread now. Read back. At least 2 of those have completely agreed what happened was racist, the third was hoping there was another explanation. Nobody thinks what happened to that little girl should have happened, we're all equally appalled.

You know I'd really take a good long look at yourselves on this thread. It should be possible to have a discussion without wild name-calling and character assassination. And then people are not even allowed to try to defend themselves from the extremely nasty, baseless accusations - because then they're just 'whining' and 'making themselves the victim'.

Anyway, I won't be engaging further you'll be happy to hear. There's absolutely no point.

Cherrythomasina · 27/09/2023 17:02

Sorry that was to @Oliotya et al

Cherrythomasina · 27/09/2023 17:05

That video is heartbreaking @JTK50

JTK50 · 27/09/2023 17:17

@Cherrythomasina This video doesn't evens show half of it, in the original video he even removes the black kids from the queue and places them behing the other kids, but the audience are also racist and hearltess because not one single person claps for the black kids, and these are arab black kids from their own country. Anyone who can do that to kids is just pure evil in my eyes.

Cherrythomasina · 27/09/2023 17:24

Oh no! That is so terrible. It is beyond heartless.
