Living room, sitting room, lounge or …

What do you call the room usually with the sofas and TV in, the communal family space?

I know we are going to have a few Reception Room 1s and Reception Room 2s, and this being MN, possibly a few Parlours and Drawing Rooms too 😂

But think your average 3/4 bed house, so downstairs you have a kitchen, a dining room and a …….?

Do you just call it whatever it was referred to as in your childhood?

Would love to know if there are regional and generational differences.

My parents always called it the lounge. I call it the living room.

Living room. Growing up, we called it the sitting room.

North West, 40s, Living Room

yesandyesagain · 23/09/2023 10:02

people I know with two tend to call them the front room and the back room. I'm WC from the east midlands and mostly hear sitting room.

Quitter23 · 23/09/2023 10:02

Front room. Although it's actually at the back..

StrongandNorthern · 23/09/2023 10:02

'The Room' (Yorkshire).

sleepyscientist · 23/09/2023 10:03

The livingroom has always been our main couch space. Now we have an open plan kitchen dinning living space we still call that bit the kitchen then the what is marketed as a snug the livingroom.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/09/2023 10:03

Lounge is what comes automatically. Living room is what I think sounds better. So I compromise with front room 😁

RainbowUtensils · 23/09/2023 10:03

My parents called it the sitting room growing up, I prefer living room so that's what we call it now. My husband occasionally calls it the lounge which I don't like either! South east / south west

SM4713 · 23/09/2023 10:04

Lounge room- but I grew up abroad

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/09/2023 10:06

'The Room' (Yorkshire).

Yes! S Yorkshire

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 23/09/2023 10:07

Ah my Nana used to call it The Room! 😍

DontCallMeBaby · 23/09/2023 10:08

Living room. It was with a lounge with a settee growing up; I switched to a living room with a sofa in a fit of juvenile snobbery and it stuck. Of course karma has struck and DD call the sofa a couch cos she’s watched too much American TV.

dreamcatchmee · 23/09/2023 10:10

The front room

JaninaDuszejko · 23/09/2023 10:12

We have a sitting room and a playroom but since I have teenagers it should probably be called something else. I grew up in a large rambing farmhouse and we had a sitting room, lounge and sun porch. My grandparents had a parlour and a sitting room.

Cakefolk · 23/09/2023 10:12

Yes, definitely the room! We are posh now and have the other room too!!Blush

SquigglePigs · 23/09/2023 10:15

We flit between lounge and living room. My parents growing up called theirs the lounge. Not sure where I picked living room up from!

minipie · 23/09/2023 10:15

Sitting room is probably what comes most naturally. Or living room maybe.

We have two sitting rooms (well one is part of the kitchen really) so we say Sitting room for the kitchen one and Front room for the other one. Because it’s at the front.

TheTecknician · 23/09/2023 10:16

In the old family home, it was the lounge. Now I'm in a one bedroom flat, the 'lounge' is multipurpose and doesn't really have a name.

Sartre · 23/09/2023 10:17

Living room or lounge, I use both interchangeably.

ShinyBandana · 23/09/2023 10:17

I’ve always called it the Living Room - I’m from NW, and DH calls it the Front Room - he’s from London.

Only it’s not the front room - it’s in the middle and the room at the front is the “Music Room” where we have the piano, other instruments and the record player. So now we’re both trying to call the room with the TV the TV Room to avoid confusion because confusion was occurring😝

GOODCAT · 23/09/2023 10:18

Front room in current house. Lounge or living room in previous homes.
