Living room, sitting room, lounge or …

What do you call the room usually with the sofas and TV in, the communal family space?

I know we are going to have a few Reception Room 1s and Reception Room 2s, and this being MN, possibly a few Parlours and Drawing Rooms too 😂

But think your average 3/4 bed house, so downstairs you have a kitchen, a dining room and a …….?

Do you just call it whatever it was referred to as in your childhood?

Would love to know if there are regional and generational differences.

Sitting room. What happened to The Front Room? Has anyone still got one?

Lorrymum · 23/09/2023 14:40

Sitting room or front room. Lounge always makes me think of a pub!

MaybeSane · 23/09/2023 14:40

We have a front room, because it's at the front. Has a rarely used sofa, bookshelves, and a frequently used WFH set-up.
Also a 'where the green chairs are' room, which is the back end of the kitchen diner and has the TV, frequently used sofa, and the green chairs.

Usually the drawing room, which is what we called it growing up. I think it’s a bit pretentious though, and sometimes call it the living room.

Tell me you haven’t read the thread without telling me you haven’t read the thread. 😄

Sitting room and dining room but I noticed my adult son calls his the family room, I guess he watched too much American TV.

Butteredtoast55 · 23/09/2023 14:49

Living room. When DH is trying it on he calls it the drawing room.
Growing up we had the front room and the far front room as you had to go through the first to get to the second 😀

tedgran · 23/09/2023 14:49

Our through room, dining table at one end and chairs,/ sofa at the other end is called the sitting room. We also have a small breakfast room next to the kitchen. Grew up in a big house with a hall/ sitting room abd a drawing room.

Cotswoldbee · 23/09/2023 14:51

Family room and living room.

Family room is off the kitchen and has the usual sofa, TV, bookcases, games consoles etc. This is the goto room.
Living room is at the front of the house and has a huge corner sofa, armchairs, TV etc. TBH this room is rarely used and more than a week can go by without anyone sitting in it other than Ddog (who has his own chair under the window from where he can watch the world go by). Often it is only entered to vacuum, wind the clocks and the like.
As if to annoy the OP, my OH does refer to this room as the parlor!. 😆

EwwSprouts · 23/09/2023 14:53

Lounge. Same as growing up.

TakeMe2Insanity · 23/09/2023 14:54

I’m from london and call it the living room. Dh scottish and calls it the lounge.

Teats4twins · 23/09/2023 14:55

Living room

SlippySarah · 23/09/2023 15:00

Sitting room and settee growing up, living room and sofa now although I think I actually prefer sitting room. We also have what we call a playroom but it's also an office. I had a friend growing up who had a den and a drawing room.

Pushkinini · 23/09/2023 15:03

Family home growing up had a drawing room. It was also sometimes called the lounge. I have a sitting room or a lounge used interchangeably.

bananaboats · 23/09/2023 15:03

Living room or front room

cariadlet · 23/09/2023 15:07

Lounge because that's what I grew up with.

I don't mind living room or front room but sitting room sounds a bit pretentious unless you live in a stately home.

Tisfortired · 23/09/2023 15:09

Front room or living room

Grantanow · 23/09/2023 15:10

We have a sitting room and a drawing room.

HauntingSecrets · 23/09/2023 15:11

Living room.

I find lounge wrong and also think of airports and hotels. It would be like calling your hall the lobby 😄

Hahaha I have never known that ‘lounge’ was so disliked!

We call it living room which is hardly used as we mostly use the family room which is part of the kitchen /diner.
Also have a playroom which is where all the DCs and dog hang out the most (dog thinks she’s a DC 😁)

We like to call the hall the ‘vestibule’ <Friends reference> 😂

Edited to add - I am still waiting for ‘Snug’, or have I missed it?? 😉

I'd forgotten about "the room".

It's in't room.

Left Yorkshire as a child and even my parents have stopped using "room"

I have a front room or living room. East anglia.

Edinvillian · 23/09/2023 15:21

I call it a living room but at work (estate agent) I call it a lounge.

Spidey66 · 23/09/2023 15:22
