Living room, sitting room, lounge or …

What do you call the room usually with the sofas and TV in, the communal family space?

I know we are going to have a few Reception Room 1s and Reception Room 2s, and this being MN, possibly a few Parlours and Drawing Rooms too 😂

But think your average 3/4 bed house, so downstairs you have a kitchen, a dining room and a …….?

Do you just call it whatever it was referred to as in your childhood?

Would love to know if there are regional and generational differences.

I don’t like the word lounge for some reason. I keep meaning to use sitting room but have defaulted to calling it the front room - as it’s, err, at the front. (And the one at the back is generally referred to as through the back, avoiding the word room completely!)

Front room. Although it's actually at the back..

When I was a child it was always the Front Room. Now I live in a 3 storey house and have a Living Room downstairs which is also a dining room and a Sitting Room on the middle floor.

I don't like the word Lounge.

Flatandhappy · 23/09/2023 13:30

I grew up with a sitting room. Now we have a living room (nicer furniture, open fire, piano, carpet) and family room (dog allowed on sofa, doors lead onto outdoor entertaining area, wooden flooring) which is what most Australian homes with two living spaces seem to call them.

Lounge. Sometimes I jokingly refer to it as he drawing room and the tiny garden as the 'grounds' but that's cos I think those are very posh versions. OH is from the north and tends more towards sitting room.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/09/2023 13:49

West Midlands. Always been the lounge.

Oldraver · 23/09/2023 13:51

Front room growing up, still call it that now but to people outside the family would usually say sitting or living room

I'm from the Midlands and OH from the North were front room is more common

WeightoftheWorld · 23/09/2023 13:51

Living room, but I'm not sure why as my DPs raised me with it called sitting room.

dementedpixie · 23/09/2023 13:53

Has always been the Living room (scotland).
The garage conversion is still the Playroom even though the kids are now 19 and 16! I suppose ds plays the PlayStation in there now Grin

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 23/09/2023 13:53

Front room. East Midlands. It's said a lot here.

Front room. London. I absolutely hate 'lounge'. Especially the way a lot of people say it. Laaaaaahhhnge.

lottiegarbanzo · 23/09/2023 13:56

Living room.

'Lounge' makes me shudder. Ugh.

LBOCS2 · 23/09/2023 13:58

Sitting room - and we have a playroom which is soon to be transformed into something which has a little less Lego in it, but I'm not sure what to call it 🤔

Janieforever · 23/09/2023 14:03

Living room.

I find lounge wrong and also think of airports and hotels. It would be like calling your hall the lobby 😄

PinkBuffalo · 23/09/2023 14:04

Front room here

the house I growed up in it was always the front room even though it was at the back lol

We call it 'the other room' too, even though we only have one living room. It comes from being in the dining room and saying 'shall we go to the other room now'?

We have front room (lounge) and other room (dining room).

EarlofShrewsbury · 23/09/2023 14:11

I call it the living room and my parents call theirs the front room.

My grandparents (Yorkshire) called the living room the 'house' and the dining room the 'room'.

Thatladdo · 23/09/2023 14:17

My Granny had a Front room for "best" and a sitting room
I grew up with a living room
I now have a Living room, Lounge and a Snug.

BebbanburgIsMine · 23/09/2023 14:24

I'm in NE Scotland and it's the living room and always has been.

I live in a quirky house though and the living room and kitchen are upstairs and the bathroom and bedrooms are downstairs, and zi love it!

stargirl1701 · 23/09/2023 14:26

We have a living room (grown-up space) and family room (children's space). The family room has the TV. The living room has the fireplace and the piano.

Isseywith3witchycats · 23/09/2023 14:29

as our house has a room at the front and a kitchen at the back on the ground floor the room at the front is called surprisingly the front room

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/09/2023 14:33

Sitting room.

Scotland

I'm in my 40s. My parents called it the sitting room.

My grandparents called it the Front Room.
