Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Good luck, Mouse.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/11/2023 09:09

There are 2 types of glucosamine supplement: hydroxide doesn't work; sulphate has some evidence of effectiveness (but is made from shellfish, so is no use for veggies or anyone with a shellfiish allergy).

I don't know why oval. I've never found a good way to describe shape-flavours to other people. That bit of my whisky tasting notes always used to baffle the others - apparently to normal people 'round' is fine but 'triangular' is weird.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/11/2023 10:15

Never heard flavours being described as having shapes before.

A few years ago I read that taking a teaspoon of turmeric in water was good for arthritis so tried it and found the taste very bitter. Didn't do it again.

I take turmeric, ginger and cinnamon in my morning cocoa. And milk, and a little glucose. I have no idea what shape it tastes like.

Kucinghitam · 07/11/2023 10:41

I would guess that flavours having shapes is possibly a form of synaesthesia?

I don't have synaesthesia as such, but a weird "connection" between seeing/hearing which I've had for decades. Sometimes when I hear a sudden/unexpected (not necessarily loud) sound, I see a corresponding flash of light/dark/movement usually around my visual periphery. It's a bit like being haunted by a very shy poltergeist.

It still unsettles me slightly when it happens because then I have to go around checking in case there really was a nearby physical cause that has to be dealt with.

I don't have synaesthesia either but have an uncomfortable reaction to reading about or seeing people hurt. For example, if someone falls over or I read about it, I get a painful tingling that starts at the soles of my feet and goes up my legs. If you ever jumped off a wall as a kid and it made your feet and legs hurt, it's a bit like that.

That's what I was talking, along chondroitin, in combined tablets.

On tasting shapes, I once was on a Norwegian ship, the galley always stewed the coffee for hours and never emptied the last cup in the jug, when they made a new batch. Someone commented on the vileness of it and I said it tasted red - it did.

Never before nor since have I had anything similar.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/11/2023 12:30

wrong thread...

MouseMinge · 07/11/2023 20:00

The pre-op assessment went well. It wasn't what I was expecting, that's to come on 22nd November (just got a call today)*. This was just bloods, blood pressure, and an ECG. I'm all set for tomorrow. Well, after I've had a shower with some anti-MRSA shower gel or something.

*That's the one where I get to go on an exercise bike for fifteen minutes while they consider whether I'm healthy enough for surgery. I have no doubt I will be especially now that I've found out that I only have to go at the speed I'm comfortable with. Phew!

Another day of beautiful weather too, which is always a source of some level of joy. I hope you've all had a good day. Mine was not bad as I managed to wake up on each train just as it got to my station, even though I very nearly missed the Havant stop. I also met two lovely dogs, one of whom doesn't like people but leaned on me and licked my chin!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/11/2023 20:07

Your dog magnet powers are still working, then.

Hope all goes smoothly tomorrow, without too much hanging about (particularly irritating after an early start).

Gonners · 07/11/2023 21:29

Good news, @MouseMinge - and best wishes for tomorrow.

I also met two lovely dogs, one of whom doesn't like people but leaned on me and licked my chin!

Ha! We met a new lovely dog today, allegedly a cross between a pure white standard poodle and a yellow lab. She is huge, dark grey and (we were told) very timid. She immediately insisted on making friends with dog-magnet MrG and (when I paid her no attention) gave me a very thorough slobbering.

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/11/2023 21:58

Best wishes from me too @MouseMinge

I LOVE chilli heat. The hotter the better.

I’m not keen on turmeric.

@Medee gosh that was quick! I’m a very slow reader.

I think I have a type of synesthesia in that I ‘see’ music. When I listen to a song I see a sequence of lines and shapes. Sometimes I draw a melody on a piece of paper if I want to remember it but don’t have anything to record it on. When I used to smoke weed it would get more pronounced and it would keep me occupied for quite a while. I’m studying a neuroscience module at the moment which so far has touched a little bit upon synesthesia and how the senses can cross over. I’ll be interested to see what it says later down the line. Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks goes into it as well I seem to recall. Brains are weird.

MouseMinge · 07/11/2023 22:50

Brains are weird and wonderful things.

I've showered with the lovely don't give us MRSA shower gel. I then used a really nice shower gel so that I don't smell of hospital. I'll hopefully post tomorrow evening but if not I'll "see" you all on Thursday. Thanks for all the loveliness. 😘

Britinme · 07/11/2023 23:00

Em and I lucked out today. We were booked to go to the London Aquarium at 1, so we went in early to see Big Ben and Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. As we emerged from Westminster underground station, we realised the roads were all blocked off and protesters with placards were chanting “Not my King”, and it dawned on me that this was the day of the state opening of Parliament. We got there just in time to see Charlie driving by in the state coach waving at the protesters. Em was more impressed by the sharks at the Aquarium though. Flying back to the USA tomorrow though, which is just as well. My feet need a rest.

duc748 · 08/11/2023 00:38

Sounds like you've all had a great time, Brit! 😀

angelico53 · 08/11/2023 08:57

Best of luck @MouseMinge

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/11/2023 10:04

Hope all goes well, Mouse!

MavisMcMinty · 08/11/2023 12:35

Yes, hope all goes well today, Mouse! xxx

duc748 · 08/11/2023 12:45

<joins Mouse chorus of good wishes.>

MouseMinge · 08/11/2023 17:07

The mouse chorus, like the frog chorus but totally not like it at all because it's full of fun, swears and not sung by Mr bad hair dye job.

I'm back on the short stay ward after the recovery word, maybe moved to a "proper" ward for feeding tube training. Sort of hurts like a mofo, some is soreness so difficult to distinguish soreness from pain but it's all good. Plenty of pain relief and I've walked myself to the toilet. Lovely staff, of course, and I'm so glad that this first stage is on its way to being done. Love and blah blah blah to you all Cx.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/11/2023 17:36

Good to know you're being well looked after and have decent pain relief, Mouse. Hope the rest of the stay goes well.

Gonners · 08/11/2023 17:53

Well done, brave Mouse! Hope you get a decent night's sleep.

Britinme · 08/11/2023 22:54

Take all the good drugs Mouse!

MouseMinge · 09/11/2023 06:46

They switch you to paracetamol pretty quickly, although to be fair they did give me pure codeine when I asked for some because it was all a bit much. This morning I'm mostly just very sore which as I have three little holes plus the feeding tube around my stomach area is fair enough. It's getting up that hurts. And walking but once I get going it's better. They've been putting some clear carb stuff through the tube since about 20:00 so the tube is working. I'm hoping I'll see the nutritionist early and be out soon after. I ended up staying on a short stay ward which was nicer than being moved to a proper ward. Much quieter. There were four of us here. I'm currently waiting for apple juice.

crabbyoldbat · 09/11/2023 07:45

Hope it continues to go well, Mouse. Love and luck to you x
