Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

You now have to search for Wraysbury.

artant · 04/11/2023 13:24

I got the same message @MavisMcMinty but it opened up happily enough when I asked it to open in a new tab.

It’s quite a place although with that much house I’d really want a decent size garden.

Oh I LOVE that, Tric! And sure enough, in mid-Devon when I clicked the cloud icon, we have pretty much the only sunny weather in the south-west!

Same.

I love the weather website. It's transfixing.

Kucinghitam · 05/11/2023 18:22

We’ve had a busy weekend ChezKuc, including such wonders as: Bonfire Night at local pub, a nice walk in the park as the rain finally stopped after 2 weeks of wet half-term, and most importantly, installing sticky draught-excluder strips around our warped old front door. The glamour! Grin

Snoop and I went to the pier to see the fireworks this evening. So glad they held it on the proper bonfire night because the weather was glorious here today, at long last! I noticed there were a lot of people out and about outside my flat but when we got down to the seafront it was heaving! It was a bit wonderful. We got a place on the pier. Most of the pier was closed for safety reasons. The sea was pretty wild and the beaches either side of the pier were packed with people. Part of the road at the front was closed, there were fairground rides and just so many people. It felt like we were a proper town full of community spirit and it felt so good to be a part of it.

The fireworks were spectacular and we all cheered when they started and then at various points throughout the show when there were particularly out of this world. The last fireworks seemed to light up the entire sky and there was so much smoke that the red lights of the wind turbines had disappeared. It was a magical night and I know that the same thing will happen next year. I loved that for our town, Bonfire Night is more important than Halloween!

artant · 05/11/2023 22:00

Oh that sounds ace. I love a proper fireworks night. I can hear a few here but it’ll be noisier next week for Diwali.

Kucinghitam · 06/11/2023 12:19

Your Bonfire Night sounds wonderful @MouseMinge! I adore firework displays, and being by the seaside would make them even better (apart from the cold!).

I've just found this thread and am quite quite baffled.

I actually hate it when people say, I don't like spicy food. They don't mean 'spicy' at all; most people have no problem with cinnamon, nutmeg, even coriander and cumin. They mean chilli. Why don't they say so? As for yer odd fellow there, I suspect it has something to do with teenage boy bravado insisting on 'being able to handle' the hottest chilli dish. Which ironically, can often lead to a dislike of chilli in later life. I reckon that's what's happened there.

Tricyrtis2022 · 06/11/2023 12:58

That chilli bloke is really strange and, like duc, I suspect is it teenage boy bravado.

Before they moved away we'd regularly have a friend and his early-20s son over for pizza and they seemed to be in a competition with each other about how much chilli they loaded onto their pizzas. The dad would sometimes use so much he'd get hiccups. One day I asked 'Are you two having some sort of pissing contest?' and it never happened again.

MouseMinge · 06/11/2023 13:12

Yeah, @duc748 I'm a chili lightweight and avoid it because the line between what I can eat and what makes my mouth burn is very slim. Mild spices are good. At some point this century chilis became ubiquitous and it boils my piss.

MouseMinge · 06/11/2023 13:13

In good news, I'm booked in for my pre op assessment tomorrow and the minor surgery is booked for Wednesday!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 06/11/2023 13:21

Excellent news Mouse.

I don't get chilli love either happily neither do my nearest and dearest.

I remember once meeting someone - very posh European aristocracy, I think, operating in the art world so outwardly sophisticated yet he doused everything in tomato ketchup!

Britinme · 06/11/2023 19:07

I like most spices but can’t take much chili heat. Basically I don’t enjoy anything that makes my mouth feel as if it’s on fire. Luckily DH feels pretty much the same.

MavisMcMinty · 06/11/2023 20:39

Something in (most) curries makes my ears itch, deep inside, and my throat to a lesser extent, an itch that can’t be scratched, I must be allergic to whatever it is. Still eat curries though, now and then, it’s a small if maddening price to pay.

Gonners · 06/11/2023 21:04

People can be allergic to all sorts of weird things, including turmeric which is allegedly an anti-inflammatory for the rest of us and features in many (most?) curry recipes. As I can't taste it, I'd always assumed its main purpose was to stain your fingers and clothes. Itchy ears must be maddening, though!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/11/2023 21:29

MaBint has oral allergy syndrome (a slightly weird form of allergy) that produces similar symptoms to those, Mavis. In her case it's assorted fruit and veg, though, rather than spice. And it also triggers an uncontrollable shake - like a dog that's just climbed out of a river.

I quite like chilli in modest quantities, but it does make the hair on the very top of my head stand up.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/11/2023 21:33

Turmeric does have a taste as well as excellent dyeing properties. It's not an easy one to describe though - slightly woody, perfumey, oval sort of a taste.

MavisMcMinty · 06/11/2023 21:44

Turmeric was - maybe still is but I’m out of the business now - thought to be a superfood, with anti-cancer/anti-inflammation properties. I remember a doctor colleague raving about it about a decade ago.

I decided to make ginger shortbread one day and it wasn’t until I’d added the dried ginger to the very last of the butter and flour in the house that I realised I’d added turmeric instead. I shoved a load more sugar in it and some cinnamon and ginger, but the results were pretty rank.

Britinme · 06/11/2023 21:46

I take turmeric supplements every day, along with resveratrol and liquid glucosamine, and I credit that combo with reversing the arthritis that was happening in my knee.

Oval?

I'm kind of making my tongue all curved while thinking about the flavour of turmeric, and am inclined to agree with you!

Fingers crossed, Mouse. I took glucosamine for about 18 months, many years ago, as my aunt swore by it. So did I, I said,

"Well that was a waste of fucking money!"

Medee · 07/11/2023 08:21

Good luck, Mouse.

thanks for the Claire Keegan recommendation thread, I’ve just read Small Things… and thoroughly enjoyed it, great writing.
