Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

I always think that he and Elton look like a pair of elderly aunties who have been rudely woken from their afternoon naps

😂

Crunched · 03/10/2023 21:46

As fellow school parents; Roman Atkinson, as previously described. Jeremy Clarkson, rude, walked out of performances once his DD had 'done her bit'. (As did his then wife).Bloke who played Ian on East Enders - unassuming.

David Jason -rude.
Will Young - just lovely.
We were moored next to Jim Davidson whilst he did a summer season in Torquay. He was polite and had no rowdy parties as I had feared.
My big surprise though was Jonathan Ross. He, his wife and DC were staying in the same hotel. JR was extremely polite to the staff and he and his family were quiet and charming throughout their stay.

More props for Steve Coogan - he moved to my uncle’s tiny village in Sussex and came along to the village’s summer play and then invited everyone in the audience (me included) back to his for wine in his garden afterwards. He seemed lovely, or if nothing else at least making a big effort to integrate with the locals!

Ainsley Harriot was really up himself and a bit, how shall we say...handsy.

Who was it? Name/clues?

Gawdimold · 03/10/2023 21:51

Paul ogrady was lovely.

Lifeomars · 03/10/2023 21:51

one of my mates met David Bowie and she says he was everything and more, charming, engaging and very very good-looking. I am and remain so jealous of her!

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 03/10/2023 21:51

My husband accidentally knocked into Michael Vaugh on a night out and apologised... Michael Vaughn responded by asking him to go outside for a fight.
My husband, who has never been in a fight in his life, politely declined

goodbyestranger · 03/10/2023 21:51

Not sure it would be wise even though he and his bandmate didn't actually get to sleep with underage girls.

PodgePie · 03/10/2023 21:52

Since when has Andy Murray been an ‘ex-tennis player’?

Sushiandunagi · 03/10/2023 21:52

Nigella Lawson is absolutely beautiful in real life. Warm and charming
Charles Saatchi just seemed erratic and grumpy
Catherine Zeta Jones was lovely when I met her
Bradley Cooper has most remarkable blue eyes and is very very charming
Bernie Ecclestone was quite nice too (unlike his daughters)
Hugh Grant was a real disappointment. Rude and arrogant
Annie Lennox was also quite rude
Nigel Havers - pleasant but very cold

goodbyestranger · 03/10/2023 21:53

That was to FatherJack etc. He's major major though.

I would have a bit crushed if he had been terrible to her.

We stayed in the same hotel as Annie Lennox a few years ago and she was coming to the lift at the same time as we had just got in. She said to her companion loudly - Tell them to get out!
We declined her polite request and told her there was plenty of room for them too. She grumbled and walked off. She had dark glasses on at 7pm at night in Ireland! Really rude.

So you're telling me Annie Lennox is a bit of a diva? Well, blow me down!

Clive Myrie was an absolutely lovely man. Very polite and interesting to talk to.

phew that is a relief, I really admire him

saraclara · 03/10/2023 21:56

What did I not expect - Michael Gove. He's rather witty and charming

I know a civil servant who worked for Gove, and won't hear a word against him as a person, even though he doesn't remotely share his political views. Says he's unfailingly polite, considerate and kind to his staff.

Jennalong · 03/10/2023 21:57

David Tennet was walking around our local food festival a couple of Saturday's ago with his wife & family.

Heard that whilst he was pleasant to those who went up to him he refused to pose for photos / engage with people as he was with his family enjoying the day.

For me that's fair enough , he wasn't working and just wanted to be husband / dad which of course is correct .
They don't owe us friendship / their time if not working.

She has a lovely photo of them together.

Maze76 · 03/10/2023 21:57

Donnie Wahlberg ,Joey McIntyre and Jon Knight from New Kids On The Block. I’ve meet all the members of the group few times - but these guys- particularly Donnie are just so charming, friendly and really nice. I just love them!

meercat23 · 03/10/2023 22:00

Gordon Ramsey and his wife. Delightful. He was clearly in a hurry but made time to be pleasant to everyone who wanted to talk to him. His wife is lovely too and very beautiful

Billy Connolly. Lovely and chatty when my DH approached him when he was having a cuppa. No Airs and graces and happy to chat for ages

John Prescott, staying in the same hotel as us. Pleasant and friendly to all the people gawping at him over breakfast

George Best Also staying in another hotel we were at. Very shy and avoided making eye contact but not in an arrogant way. Amazingly good looking. Those eyes!

People are really shocked when I mention the name. But you know, this was the '70's.

David Bowie ?

Catastrophejane · 03/10/2023 22:05

Shame about Steve Coogan. Sadly I expect him to be like that, but also hoped he’d be one of the ones that people came on to say was actually a lovely bloke.

love his work, but comes across as someone who would be a wanker in real life

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 22:05

Fair enough, then, goodbyestranger.

FuckingAnnoyed · 03/10/2023 22:05

Mary Berry - not nice at all. Met her through work and she was haughty and rude.

Yes, he's a charm offensive weapon. You can chuck him into a room of people who really dislike conservatives and he will emerge with a stack of dinner invites.
