Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

He is lovely but very reserved and shy.

Rowan also has a stammer. One of the reasons why he often very much over-emphasises sounds is a mechanism to help him with this.

It sounds hilarious when he does it as Edmund Blackadder or Inspector Fowler, but it would probably come across as weird and even pompous/arrogant if he did the same just speaking one-to-one to a stranger in normal life.

Babyghirl · 03/10/2023 21:27

Met a load, u2 where down to earth so where the corrs, all of westlife, but kian I have to say was an ignorant prick.

Blinky21 · 03/10/2023 21:28

Used to interview them for a job, Craig David was the loveliest. My overall experience was the less famous someone was the more difficult they were, the more famous, the more gracious

goodbyestranger · 03/10/2023 21:28

One of the celebs I encountered was/ is a huge rock star who offered myself and a schoolfriend a lift home aged 14/15 after a concert, along with one of his band, and got pretty cross when we just said 'bye after getting to the friend's house. Goodness we were naive,

truthhurts23 · 03/10/2023 21:29

Jade goody, met her twice
getting her hair done and in an airport, she was friendly both times
Expected her to be rude

bombastix · 03/10/2023 21:30

Lemmy from Motörhead. A real gent!

goodbyestranger · 03/10/2023 21:30

People are really shocked when I mention the name. But you know, this was the '70's.

WestwardHo1 · 03/10/2023 21:31

I have met lots of wildlife presenters. They really been very nice especially Matt Baker.

SurpriseItsMeHorseyNeighNeigh · 03/10/2023 21:32

On a less creepy note, Ben Harper was super down to earth, Enrique Iglesias was nice, friendly and polite (but boy did the women go crazy around him),and Kristen Stewart was OK but really quiet and awkward.

Actually, do any of those people count as celebrities? 😀

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/10/2023 21:32

The thing is... if you don't really know them, just bumped into them - your experience may be a one off, caught them in a bad mood, lovely mood, whatever. The next persons experience could be totally different, and neither could really give an accurate picture of what that celeb is really like as a person.

You can say the name, you don't know them, doesn't matter.

If you DO know a celeb... you can't say so! Imagine if your friends were posting and naming you, on here... and saying whether you were truly lovely in every way or a stinking arseholey cuntfaced bastardypants.

And if you do, who believes you anyway? You get asked questions, which if you answer you're potentially betraying the trust of a friend or someone you work with, and if you don't then you're obviously lying.

SO these threads are always going to be pretty subjective and lean towards the unpleasant side of things.

I do know various people who you might call celebs (been on telly multiple times or in their own thing on telly or written books, people pay to go see them etc...)... they're... I realise this is a boring fact... just people. Doing a job.

bombastix · 03/10/2023 21:34

Yes I don't think I would want too much judgment myself on an early train before a coffee. We all have our moments

Johnny Vegas is lovely and has impeccable manners. A true gentleman.

yes, one of my family members who is a real fan of his met him and said how nice he was

ImAMinion · 03/10/2023 21:35

I met Jennifer Anniston. She was lovely, I was a star struck mess, then calmed down!
She’s tiny! And it was painful to realise that she looked exactly like her photos (which you just hope are photoshopped to the max). This was like a decade ago though.

Boris Johnson - he was very friendly when I was an Olympic Games maker - I cringe at that one now.

SurpriseItsMeHorseyNeighNeigh · 03/10/2023 21:35

Also, once I saw someone in a convertible in St-John's Wood. To this day, I have no idea if it was Rod Stewart or an exenctric old lady but either way, they behaved exactly how I expected Rod Stewart or a posh old lady in St-John's Wood to behave.

An acquaintance used to work as cabin crew on Concorde: she said the biggest witch in the world was....Whitney Houston!

Lots of politicians!

What did I not expect - Michael Gove. He's rather witty and charming.

I don't agree with him but he was good company.

I came face to face with him when I was out shopping. He clocked I’d recognised him and smiled bashfully. I was a little surprised, it was quite gracious of him.

bombastix · 03/10/2023 21:38

@TheGander - he is very well mannered and good with people. I am not surprised that he was gracious.

I love Ian Rankin and would probably have lost my shit if I met him. Love your story.

I love his books, started reading your post with trepidation and it was such a relief to find out he's a good un

elsx · 03/10/2023 21:42

I went on a internet date around 6/7 years ago, the guy told me he was meeting his friend for a drink before meeting me at an agreed time. On my arrival my date said he was running behind catching up with his friend but wanted me to come and say hello instead of sitting outside. Walked into the pub, sat down with my date and his friend… his friend was Michael Barrymore, he ended up staying for another drink and we had a lovely chat. Nothing but good things to say about meeting him, he was kind, funny and was so interested in my life, and had fantastic taste in red wine!

I've met a few politicians too.

The only one I've ever not enjoyed meeting was Suella Braverman. She's worse in RL!

Through theatre I've met Jason Donovan - he's a really nice guy. Anthem Turner - also lovely but quieter than you'd imagine and Mr Motivator is who nicer than he comes across on TV if that's possible!

Oh my, it is quite terrifying to think that Suella is even worse in real life, what on earth did she do, open her bag and devour a little kitten while laughing like a Bond villain? I find her really chilling

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/10/2023 21:43

I met Angela Lansbury and she was an absolutely delightful, charming woman who had time for everyone she spoke to, just as I expected she would be.

I saw him in the cafe at the Portrait Gallery of Scotland. There happens to be a portrait of him hanging there. The older ladies who were having her tea next to the painting were so excited, and he went over to them and had a chat, all smiles, I thought he seemed really relaxed and kind.

Olindia · 03/10/2023 21:44

Yes Eileen from Corrie is rude! My mum was really disappointed when I told her.

Vinnie Jones- kind of what you imagine but was very kind and generous.

frankie detori- nice but quite… aloof?

Edited

I always think that he and Elton look like a pair of elderly aunties who have been rudely woken from their afternoon naps

bombastix · 03/10/2023 21:45

Most politicians are actually quite pleasant because they do need to be! They need votes.

Yes some of them are worse than their public personas.
