So it is Russell Brand

The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

Well "sex addiction" was Weinstein's defence. He turned out to be an actual rapist.

When people say "sex addiction" they should all remember that addiction does not somehow absolve or eliminate criminal responsibility. The two may go together

I imagine they are trying to silence and alienate him because his views are challenging to the government and he has a lot of followers. Call me cynical but it would hardly be the first time.

Yeah and the best way to do that is with a rape allegation, because we all know how seriously people take rape…oh wait, they don’t give a shit.

LakeTiticaca · 16/09/2023 10:01

So if he's being accused of rape and sexual assault, have his alleged victims made statements to the police? Has RB been interviewed under caution?
If not why not?
Anyone can bandy around accusations of allsorts of wrongdoing but there has to be some solid evidence.
Surely a TV documentary could prejudice a fair trial

Highandlows · 16/09/2023 10:02

@LakeTiticaca exactly. A bit mmmm….

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 16/09/2023 10:02

I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but the dispatches programme isn’t on until tomorrow night. At 10:50, by which time all the hype will be over and it won’t be anything new.

Not sure where the idea came from that it’s tonight, but on the Freeview schedule it’s showing as tomorrow.

Dispatches 90 mins special will probably give him more to talk about and earn even more

Agreed. The money made by someone with millions of followers is serious money. It's no wonder RB has given his career up for his YouTube programs.

The Dispatches special will no doubt give him more followers and more money.

cripes, talk about guilt by association - sex addiction (which some dispute the existence of) is a thing/concept - rape is an entirely separate serious offence. Weinstein has nothing to do with it.

FiddleLeaf · 16/09/2023 10:05

It’s on at 9pm this eve isn’t it?

Apparently the Times are releasing the story at 3 today.

I also wonder if he's simply riding this wave for views (and consequently, money) before the news hits. I don't think anyone else has alluded to it being about RB but himself. So it may actually not be about him at all but he's using this opportunity to allude to it and make money. When it ends up not being him, he can easily say he didn't specify anything and he's not talking about this particular news leak.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/09/2023 10:06

The biggest news story of the year

Off the top of my head I can think of at least 20 stories that have been bigger than the confirmation that Russell Brand is a sleaze.

Properly laughing at the notion that RB has to be taken down because he's become too dangerous to the establishment 🤣

Cantrushart · 16/09/2023 10:09

Come on. The US media has been complicit in huge coverups from atrocities committed during acts of war to the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Not reporting on things that are unfavorable to the home country is not unique to the UK.

The 2023 Reporters Without Borders freedom of press rankings places the UK 26th in the rankings for 2023, while the US is at 45.

A gallup poll in 2022 found that only 11 percent of the US public trusted the information from major news outlets.

Please tell me that you handed her arse to her in this debate.

lionsleepstonight · 16/09/2023 07:45

Dispatches need to re read the definition of 'A list'.

It wasn’t Dispatches that said A listers, or any ‘celebrities’ at all.

It’s the other press posting speculation.

Summerslimtime · 16/09/2023 07:43

He had a sex addiction and has told us all about his shagging. So now some women have come forward and said they were raped? Is that what it's saying?

I always liked him, really enjoyed his books, been to see him live etc. I was watching his YouTube channel until a few months back (love politics), but he's suddenly gone really right wing and its weird. That's not him at all. Is it for the money? The adulation from the US? I don't bother with him now.

Really right wing?!? If anything, he's pretty left wing! But yes, he's always been open about being a sex addict and being promiscuous. Not sure there will be anything noteworthy in the programme, some women have made an allegation perhaps, but it doesn't make it true.

x2boys · 16/09/2023 10:10

How is Russel.Brand the biggest news story of the year ?if its a,true he's hardly a paragon of virtue
I would have thought the Huw Edwards allegations were far bigger then Russell Brand .

StBrides · 16/09/2023 10:10

nc343 · 16/09/2023 09:52

Sorry but as a victim of rape I absolutely DO care if there are - as alleged - a huge number of victims. It has implications for us all. These men deserve to be publicly dragged over coals.

Well said, some of the views expressed here are pretty awful. I'm sorry for what you've been though and I hope all of this isn't too triggering for you, look after yourself this weekend.

Completely agree, a few of the “is that it” comments here are really disgusting.

So rape and sexual assault is merely 'sleaze' in your book?

Because that's what is being discussed here.

bombastix · 16/09/2023 10:11

@overdalexx - strong disagree. If the story is "sex addict but infact rapist" then it will be very like Weinstein.

Whether sex addiction is a thing is up for debate. But criminally, being an addict is not a solid defence in law. It may go to intent for sexual offending.

Anyway, let's see what is said.

Or he knows more people in the public eye that are involved? If he goes down,so will they.
