No way is it JR, he just is not like that! My 5 would be

RB (already named)
DW
NF
FS
LF

These initials are confusing, when it thread first started RB was assumed to be Russell Brand, Rob Brydon and Rob Beckett!

Rape is a huge story. Someone getting away with rape due their status, should be a huge story.

I don’t get the minimisation. It’s not enough of a story that potentially people are being raped and nothing happens due to the rapists status?

The vast majority of rapists get away with it. Ordinary men rape and get away with it most of the time. Where's the big scandal about that?

RosesAndHellebores · 16/09/2023 14:41

@MrWhippyyy I apologise if that appeared to minimise rape, that wasn't my intention. However I will add that I think rape by an unknown man is no less massive than rape by a celebrity.

Have kind of dipped in and out of the thread but would RB being involved in some sort of rape allegation really be such a massive story or scandal? Of course it would be hideous for those involved but a) he’s a fringe YouTuber these days, not an a-lister (although if he is a rapist he should be tried in court and imprisoned) and b) everyone knows about his sexual incontinence anyway, he has written about it extensively! It would hardly be a ‘scandal’ that his behaviour drifted from ‘unpleasant’ to ‘criminal’, surely?

Thats what im.thinking ,im.not condoning what he's done if he's a serial.abuser or rapist at all.but is he really such a big enough name to.make it the biggest news story this year ?

Awful event, thank God it isn't Sean Lock the pp has posted a link to 💔

Very sad that Sean Lock is no longer with us 😥

There's a screenshot from Twitter over on Tattle, could be a load of nonsense, but it details some of a womans account of a rape that RB committed and it's heartbreaking, shocking and disturbing. I feel like it's going to be such an upsetting show tonight.

SouthCoastShell · 16/09/2023 14:45

What do I do at 3pm? Where would I hear the announcement?

May have committed. This is a classic example of trial by social media. I can't stand Russell Brand but the allegation should be investigated by the police not by social media. What happened to innocent until proven guilty.

FriendsDrinkBook · 16/09/2023 14:48

I'd be surprised at NF , because gbbo is starting on channel 4 this week. Surely they wouldn't 'expose' him then run a family show with him presenting.

Apologies, I thought it was clear that it could be nothing when I said it could be a load of nonsense.

Iliketulips · 16/09/2023 14:48

SouthCoastShell - you could try checking one of the news sites. Chances are though, it'll be on MN within seconds.

Sam0207 · 16/09/2023 14:50

"National Treasure"..... that would be a "Cracker" of a story......

It should be a bloody big scandal. And if this is about rape then I for one am glad it’s getting ‘hyped up’. It should be. It should never be treated as though any rape is nothing to be concerned about

CrunchyCarrot · 16/09/2023 14:50

How do we know this isn't a giant wind-up as some have suggested, and the #MeToo could mean 'I too have wildly speculated with no evidence and named someone' ? Isn't the clue that it's supposed to be about comedians, that the joke is on us?

I could be totally wrong of course but right now am not convinced this is anything serious.

Vikina · 16/09/2023 14:51

@MsLavender you are right, you did say that, my apologies. But it is still concerning that there will be many who read things on social media and make judgements about things so serious that the police should be involved.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 16/09/2023 14:52

Gwendimarco · 16/09/2023 14:29

Is all this being blown up to bury some other story?
What’s going on in the political world right now?

Why does this come up every time?

A scandal is a scandal, why is there always a conspiracy theory that the government have plotted with the papers and C4 (who hate the government) to help cover something up?

MsLavender · 16/09/2023 14:54

The sad thing is though that we've already seen so many cases involving celebrities and sexual offences where people have been to the police and they've not been believed so they have no choice but to turn to the press. I get what you're saying though.

You're absolutely right, without question. However, it doesn't really fit in with normal Dispatches output and disgusting as it is it'll not be news story of the month, let alone year.

Though I do wonder if 'story of the year' is coming from the thread as opposed Dispatches/Ch4? (i.e. we're all making assumptions and inadvertently downplaying rape).

Witnit1 · 16/09/2023 14:55

How and where is the story going live at 3pm?

Let’s stop minimising rape eh? Rape should always be a big story. Someone potentially getting away with it due to their status as a ‘celebrity’ should very much be a big story.

Why do you think my comment minimised rape? I was commenting more about the profile of the person involved, rather than the potential allegations - I am sorry if that did not come across.

This breaking news has been billed as potentially the biggest story this year and I can’t see RB falling into that category when much more high profile people like Huw Edwards (extremely establishment, announced death of queen etc) and Phillip Schofield (on TM every day etc) have been reported on. Brand has drifted from high profile to conspiracy theorist YouTuber - that combined with the stuff already known about his personal life makes me confused as to how this can be such a massive story.

Because it’s a proven tactic.

And because it’s utterly blatant with all this“biggest story of the year” hype planted on social media that somebody wants to stoke up a massive story. Why?
okay so channel 4 want views… they want views every day of the year, as does every channel. They will get their views anyway if their programme is any good. So why all this hype up front? Why now? Whose interests is it serving?
