Oops cross posted

Yes we did. I thought if people read the post I was quoting they would get my reference. I'm drinking a coffee so maybe over optimistic when other people are probably coping with kids and family life and I am reclining on my sofa with said coffee. One of the joys of old age is being able to relax when you like always without distractions, allowing for gran duties of course.

Generally speaking, as much as I'm here guessing names and all hypocrite that I am

I don't believe this trial by media for anything involving alleged criminal acts is a good thing at all.

If some criminal act(a) have taken place the police should be the first port of call and the media should report on the investigation as they do with other investigations.

It feels very sleazy and down the wrong path for society to have trial by media and people being cancelled or piled on by the masses before any criminal investigation has taken place.

I know the forces record on rape is beyond dire but I don't think we should start accusing people of pretty heinous crimes like rape without any proper due process.

This is effectively the modern equivalent of villagers rushing out with pitchforks and torches.

As much as I want to agree with you, that’s not how it works.

I personally know someone who reported JS in the 70s (alongside other celebs/politicians, some now known to have been paedophiles, others as yet alive unconfirmed).

She left her job (working for another celebrity), reported what she’d seen, and was laughed out of the police station. She was then basically black balled and never worked successfully again.

When it comes to media nothing would ever come out of it was left to the correct channels. Look at HE - the BBC could have discreetly dealt with that debacle months ago!

MermaidEyes · 16/09/2023 10:51

will really laugh though if its all a big wind up and Russell Brand is part of it. I bet he cant believe his luck to be described as a comedy A lister - he isnt even a comedian and the alphabet runs out before it gets to where on the list he is

😂😂 truer words never spoken

I wasn't referring to the programme but the post I quoted which said "For this to be a breaking news C4 Dispatches, I'm sorry to have to say it will "need" to be something much darker than "just" some comedians slept with some girls.
I know it's horrible to think that that "isn't bad enough""

I don't get the "bad enough" as I don't see what is bad about consenting adults sleeping together or even having sex before they nod off.

Ah I see.

I don't much care about what consenting adults get up to either. It's just sex. Only really matters to me if it's a politician who's preaching 'old fashioned family values' when their private life is the complete opposite.

Ive said before, and others have said, if there are criminal allegations they need to be with the police, not trial by telly

And as for famous men, powerful men blah blah blah, this is applicable to bog standard every day people, your next door neighbour, your work colleagues. People sometimes treat other humans unkindly and badly, sometimes that crosses a line and becomes assault and in which case it needs to be dealt with by the police

It's got to be be about about fake news and trail by media if it ties in with RB tweet last night. No criminal charges have been put forward so you can't then go after named individuals in the UK without a trail.

It's probably a load of nothing

If the content is really dark then surely KGM wouldn't have advertised the episode with a glib 'somethings up' like he did. That would be very inappropriate

He said he was told to take the comment down as the content of the programme is sensitive.

Have you never heard of people being accused of criminal activity in the press before having had a trial?

Press can be sued for defamation / libel / slander if they make such accusations without criminal charges having being filed, but that doesn't mean they don't do so.

Operation Yewtree did result in public figures being investigated, some exonerated some went to prison. Was Stuart Hall convicted based on Yewtree, I can't remember now.

Many of Savilles victims reported him over a few decades.

Ian Watkins ex also went to the police.

Saturdays are mostly emergency hearings in most courts! Sometimes Sundays too at my local magistrates. How else do you think a wayward parent is prevented from abducting/moving/refusing to give child back to other parent or stalkers are dealt with if it happens at the weekend?!

We're talking about a lawyered up celebrity seeking an injunction against lawyered up media organisations. I would argue that that sort of stuff can't be quickly done on a weekend.

Jessie3 · 16/09/2023 11:07

he isnt even a comedian

Of course he is a comedian, he has done several stand up tours. Whether or not you think he is funny is a separate issue, but it’s literally his job.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 16/09/2023 11:09

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/09/2023 10:43

RB says he received letters from both media outlets detailing the allegations. So if it is about that it looks like they have been given ample opportunity to refute the allegations.

Yes, I watched the video and it does sound all last minute. As in legally they have to supply them with letters, but "ample" opportunity may have been a matter of hours, which resulted in the video last night.

Who knows?

Wingingit11 · 16/09/2023 11:16

@PaperWalkAndTalk there’s an active scheme for injunctions at the wkd especially when it is bankrolled by a rich or famous person.

I think that’s why he took it down.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 16/09/2023 11:31

RB isn’t news, he’s a sexual incontinent. They all were - a lot of men who went on to be very famous were/are badly behaved at the Edinburgh fringe. The venues all know and turn a blind eye.

that’s the story. Who does the BBC know is a criminal but ignores it? Who represents known rapists? Who organises the young girls to go to parties? Nothing changes in these circles - get young women in, get them drunk/drugged, get your pal to take the flack. He wasn’t convicted

ladeluge · 16/09/2023 11:36

The only time I was truly shocked and disturbed by breaking news was 9/11.

The potential repercussions from that and the sheer loss of lives and the manner in which they died, really did it for me at the time.

This crap about comedians is not comparable. Many have never heard of RB. And even if it does expose institutional criminality involving minors or rape etc. sadly that is nothing new.

ScottishIceCream · 16/09/2023 11:44

I think more important news is that Sunack was apparently going to resign for his part in Partygate, but was persuaded not to by Rupert Murdoch's crew.

That kind of influence by the media over politicians is rife, and much more of a scandal affecting society than comedians and sexual assault/ rape, as serious as that is.

However, I doubt this is about politics in any way whatsoever.

That's what I thought - my heart dropped when I thought it was him!

Although I have to remind myself that we don't know these people, and we only see a curated version of them on TV, which may or may reflect them at all, so it's best not to get invested.

Ooh. Deep fake. Good thinking. There are a few cuts in the RB video.

Interesting

Vikina · 16/09/2023 12:05

It's hardly the biggest news story of the year if it's just about what some comedians have got up to. What people do in their private lives is up to them unless it's illegal in which case it's a matter for the police not the media. So if it's a big story there must be more to it.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 16/09/2023 12:06

There must be more than RB, for it to be on for 90 minutes?

I feel the story may be that predatory behaviour has been systemic on the comedy circuit for years - presumably with undercover footage from the last three years.

I can’t understand why this would be the biggest news this year - surely this sort of behaviour is common knowledge?

JS was shocking, but a surprise to no one.
