American Bully XL to be banned by end of year

Rishi Sunak has just announced these dogs are to be banned.

Good riddance - who needs a big aggressive dog like that? It’s hardly a family pet.

I do however suspect the ven diagram of ‘people that own an American Bully XL’ and ‘people who will be interested in following this law’ may have a limited overlap however.

I am so glad the government has made this decision. These are not pets, they are status symbols for people who want to intimidate others.

They also need to act on the inbreeding of exotic bully’s. This abomination is what happens… https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3403084859954996&id=100007605465504

Just viewed it . Jesus Christ WTF are those things ? They look like aggressive toads that have been pumped on steroids . They are so ugly .

brokenstone · 15/09/2023 20:13

Does anyone know how high these dogs can jump?

My neighbour has two of them. We have a 6 ft fence separating us.

Im terrified that they will be able to jump the fence when my children are in the garden :(

Lovemusic82 · 15/09/2023 20:14

I am pleased to hear this. I have nothing against any dog but the fact that these dogs are getting into the wrong hands is very worrying, they are big strong dogs and capable of killing a full grown human (as we have seen many times). I have met a few XL bullies and they have been as soft as muck but they are strong and powerful, hard for anyone to control.

Im sure there must be people on MN that own them and love them, I’m guessing they will now have to keep their dogs muzzled when our in public and never off lead?

Sorry to tell you this but they teach them to run up trunks of trees and hang onto branches to excercise their jaws . It's petrifying.

@TheBarbieEffect

What a horrible thing to say! There will be many responsible owners of this dog breed who love their dogs very much and care for them responsibly, many adopted from rescues too I imagine.

I can only hope you get appropriate karma in return.

I am a big dog lover but don't disagree that such large strong dogs are a big risk, and welcome the restrictions on breeding and sale that the DDA would require. But the real issue is the overbreeding leading to many of these dogs in inappropriate ownership. Current dog legislation has been aimed at the wrong end of the lead for over 30 years and has proven to be completely ineffective.

So how do you propose to legislate against the right end of the lead. The problem IMO being, that by allowing people the chance to succeed you must allow room for failure and the steaks are too high.

SomeCatFromJapan · 15/09/2023 20:18

Staffies shouldn't be anywhere near as big as an XL bully.

My neighbours have a staffie from a reputable breeder and he's actually really quite a small dog. Probably less than a third of the size and weight of some of those steroid-looking monstrosities.

bonbon2023 · 15/09/2023 20:20

If only we could clamp down on nonces like we do "dangerous" dogs 🙄

storypushers · 15/09/2023 20:22

redmalt · 15/09/2023 12:32

XL bully attacks will still happen though, as no way of getting rid of all existing ones out there and idiots from breeding more

Exactly and will probably be socialised and excersised less

Stressedafff · 15/09/2023 20:22

I love how these dogs are literally mauling people to death yet “dangerous” is still in inverted commas.

Lovemusic82 · 15/09/2023 20:24

I saw a dog doing exactly this last week in my local woods, the owners just stood there whilst it was hanging of a branch, I walked past and the dog didn’t even notice me as it was too focussed on tearing the branch off a tree 😬

A staffie is very different to a XL bully, there’s a huge size difference. Of course a staffie can be crossed with a bigger breed making a dog that looks more like a XL bully but a regular staffie is about 1/3 of the size of a XL bully.

Iguanas369 · 15/09/2023 20:32

I really hope they get banned soon. I don't know why anyone would want to own one anyway, when there are so many nice dog breeds out there!

"Ugly", in your opinion, is not a reason to ban a breed.

ParentingSolo · 15/09/2023 20:44

Dissimilitude · 15/09/2023 13:19

People really struggle with the idea that something that isn't perfectly effective is still worth doing.

Are dog breeds tricky to define? Yes. Will some people work around it? Yes. Might people move onto a different dangerous breed? No doubt. Some people flout gun laws. Doesn't mean we should repeal them - they massively increase the dangers of owning a gun, for a criminal.

Now if I see one of these things in my neighbourhood, I can get it dealt with, with the force of the law behind me. As can anyone else. This gives communities the legal backing to push back against these ridiculous animals.

Unfortunately seeing one in your neighbourhood will not give you the force of the law. I had a Pitbull in my front garden keeping me hostage as I was trying to leave for school pick up once and the police operator laughed at me! Called the Dog Warden and they couldn't do anything either. Submitted a report online and nothing came of it

Im a dog owner and I’ve never seen one of these dogs anywhere in real life, so I’m wondering who actually owns them and where they all are? They’ve definitely not caught on here yet.

So because YOU haven't seen one, you're doubting ANY exist at all Hmm

In that case they can ban Yorkshire terriers and pugs because I find them ugly too 🤔. Pretty sure you can’t ban a dog breed because they are ugly?

Floopyfloop · 15/09/2023 21:07

That is a Merle exotic bully. It’s a U.S. breeder but according to his many posts he has sent lots of breeding materials to the UK.
its vile most cannot even hold their heads up.

Prescottdanni123 · 15/09/2023 21:11

@PeterssonnLndon

Majority of staffies are big softies. My dad met hundreds (literally) when he worked as a meter reader and never came across an aggressive one.

Every breed has individuals that are predispositioned to bouts of violence. Smaller breeds may not be able to rip someone's face off, but they are hardly risk free. Bites can get infected and cause sepsis after all.

The term dangerous dog doesn't mean that the majority of dogs are dangerous. It means a slightly higher proportional than average are dangerous. And it has fuck all to do with how aesthetically pleasing you happen to find the breed. I've never actually met an ugly dog.

oakleaffy · 15/09/2023 21:31

BarbieKew · 15/09/2023 11:54

Good.

Just waiting for someone to come along and say the majority of dog bites are by labradors. Yawn.

Chihuahuas.

Pit bull and XL Bully apologists always mention ''Chihuahuas'' as more aggressive than Pit bulls or XL Bullies.
I have seen some grumpy Chihuahuas, but they are all snarl and no bite, and unless they have rabies, are unlikely to harm anyone.

Labradors can bite, Any dog can bite, but the power in the jaw, and bite style makes a bull breed far more dangerous - plus they are so massively strong , most people have no control over them.

That XLB that killed Jack Lis- it needed seven bullets to kill it so police could retrieve his body, poor little lad.

RunningFromInsanity · 15/09/2023 21:34

For every other breed it is well known that genetics plays a huge part in their temperment.
Collies for sheep dog trials, GSDs for Police work, Labradors for guide dogs, spaniels for gundogs are bred through decades of genetic testing, so so much emphasis put on lineages and genes.

For every other breed it is genes genes genes. Except for some reason, not bull breeds.
Then, it’s all to do with the owner and their upbringing.

Prescottdanni123 · 15/09/2023 21:37

@RunningFromInsanity

All the dogs you mention have been bred specifically for the desired traits. In the same way, bully breeds have been bred for aggression until they reach dangerous dog status.

CurlewKate · 15/09/2023 21:38

What is the thinking behind people wanting to keep dogs like this? I just don't understand.

Exactly. Except people seem to think that bullies are an exception and genetics don’t come into it.

(my post was sarcastic, perhaps that didn’t come across!)
