American Bully XL to be banned by end of year

Rishi Sunak has just announced these dogs are to be banned.

Good riddance - who needs a big aggressive dog like that? It’s hardly a family pet.

I do however suspect the ven diagram of ‘people that own an American Bully XL’ and ‘people who will be interested in following this law’ may have a limited overlap however.

But with cocker spaniels there was a huge incentive to do the breeding control because they are perceived as family pets. Not sure that incentive is there with XL bullys.

Also for XL bullys the gene pool is so narrow can dangerous traits even be bred out? Essentially they are likely all parents/siblings/cousins of each other.

Precisely so banning them is sensible.

There is no perfect solution, mentioned things other than muzzling as well. The Dangerous Dogs Act does go some way towards helping.
You can't enforce muzzling in private homes, but muzzling larger dogs in public would help imo.
There really can't be a yes but eg my 9 stone dog mostly staffie, is friendly, law, it has to be enforceable. The the onus on owners to get that exemption certificate with the third party insurance.

Marmite17 · 15/09/2023 15:09

Typo the onus is on

It's not fair on Staffies, they can be lovely dogs, but it has to happen.

Devilsmommy · 15/09/2023 15:13

@Marmite17 oh i agree with you, larger dogs should definitely be muzzled in public, especially where children are going to be. and the onus should defo be on owners

Marmite17 · 15/09/2023 15:21

It's the fault of breeders and owners of aggressive dogs that other types of dog are now, thinking Staffies in particular, under suspicion.
It's also the owners and breeders of these dangerous dogs who are indirectly responsible for family dogs and cats being ripped apart. As well as human adults and children.

Marmite17 · 15/09/2023 16:09

I think that you should be able to physically pick up and remove a dog from a situation even when that dog is in an agitated state. You incur bites, no one else. I was thinking of getting of dog, and especially as getting on a bit, wouldn't go for a larger breed, partly because of this. If the dog is ill or injured I need the physical strength to carry him or her to my car. I need a dog I can walk without being pulled over.
Rescues mostly had Staffies, wouldn't work in my situation. They can be lovely dogs, have younger friends who have owned them, but they are strong.

Redandpinkstripes · 15/09/2023 16:21

About time too. I'm so fed up of being scared of this breed when walking my extremely placid Golden Retriever. A local owner allowed his XL puppy (40 kg may I add) to pin her down. Thankfully it didn't escalate but it was very scary!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2023 16:22

The trouble with saying ‘it’s the owner, not the breed’ is that the ‘breed’ of owner is too often the last sort of person who should have charge of a potentially lethal canine weapon.

So glad this is finally happening - but what will happen to all the XL bullies that are already owned by people?

A load will get dumped as many owners won’t want to do the official registration. Neither will they want to run the risk of home visits from police.

user1745 · 15/09/2023 17:05

Thank goodness.

I know it won't fully solve the problem but something had to be done.

Ceralee · 15/09/2023 17:12

👏👏👏👏

Government finally makes a good decision. Let's just pray they go far enough. If it means we lose some breeds of dog. So be it. There are plenty of dog breeds that aren't capable of pulling down an adult human and ripping him to pieces. That poor, poor man yesterday, how he must have suffered 😭😭

The few have ruined it for the many but something needs to done. It needs to be big and I just pray it will be.. And I own dogs so know this might affect me in more ways than one.

Get it done properly Rishi.

The precedent is that they were pts. I don't see how it can be avoided when the danger is mostly in private homes. People will not muzzle dogs in their own homes.

I can’t even with this one

@BarelyLiterate

you have to wonder about the thought process behind buying one of these when you have small children in the house.

People never think it will happen to them.

AuntieJoyce · 15/09/2023 17:18

I saw my first bully in the vets the other week and it was like no dog I’ve ever seen. Its head was bigger than my cats carrier.

Flowers To @Devilsmommy that must have been awful. Poor man

ArseMenagerie · 15/09/2023 17:23

Good news. I’ve already got a load of moronic comments bubbling up on my insta feed with pictures of dogs that look like pale eyed hell hounds on steroids with comments like, “this princess couldn’t harm anyone”. Hmmmmm.

Cattlepillar · 15/09/2023 17:29

Flamedmoth · 15/09/2023 14:36

It's the classification of breed that will be hard. Often the dogs involved are some horrendously leggy variety that even xl bully owners wouldn't identify as an xl bully

In these pictures 8 are kc registered staffies and 7 are xl bullies. The next only has one xl bully, 2 crosses of allowed breeds and the rest are recognised breeds

Staffs are the 6th most popular breed in the UK, there were over 6,000 registered each year (ignoring all the un registered ones) and frequetly tops polls of beloved breeds. They are suspected to be potentially the biggest UK breed if you take into account the unofficial staffs

I wouldn't want to be the one drawing the line.

Put the weight and height of the dog on their picture and then I think most people could tell you which ones should be muzzled/leashed in public. Staffies only weigh 10-20kg, XL bullies are much much bigger.

I genuinely think that having such a breed in the house with a small child is neglectful.

My DDs stupid boyfriend bought one last year to live with them and my dgs (not the lads son) in a flat with no garden. I was so relieved when the landlord got wind of it and he had to rehome the dog. Though he keeps saying when they move to a house they will get another one! So am so so glad this has come in!

Xrays · 15/09/2023 18:09

I was so happy to see this today. Needs to happen. It’s not the whole answer - the whole culture of wanting to seem tough on these estates etc needs stamping out - but it’s a start.

Thank you. I really feel for his family. It was in his elderly mother's garden that it happened. She had to watch her son get killed, it's just too traumatic for words
