Government to *finally* look at banning XL bullies

Thank goodness. I cannot believe it has taken so long* to even look at banning these awful creatures (I say that as a dog lover). Looks like the viral footage of an XL mauling two men who were trying to defend an 11 year old girl is the straw that broke the camels back.

*policy makers have been captured by the RSPCA/Dog’s Trust etc “it’s not the breed, it’s the owner” dogma

Should have been done months ago but credit to her for FINALLY making the right noises.

@QueenCamilla and your wrong. Because we will just find another breed to mess with.

And then legislation can deal with that one. Hopefully quicker next time.

letstrythatagain · 10/09/2023 20:39

I'd not thought much about this until very recently. An XL bully attacked someone walking down our street with her much smaller dog. The owner picked up her small dog and lifted it above her head to try and save it but the dog just mauled at her so she dropped the dog. The little dog ended up dead in the street 😔😔. Honestly it was horrific.

I'm a dog person, own a Weimaraner (big dog) but this was just a whole new level of aggression. It can't be just left. Something needs to be done.

Soapyspuds · 10/09/2023 20:39

It is a COMBINATION of breed and owner. No doubt that some people are capable of bringing up a bully XL to pose minimal danger to others however many owners raise their dogs to be a bloody nuissance.

Sadly we cannot cull the idiotic owners so the only other option is to ban the breed.

Thriving30 · 10/09/2023 20:40

That video is appalling, that poor girl and those poor men, I'm glad they all survived, because tbh that dog looked like it wasn't going to back down. One bite in the wrong place and that would've been it. Watching it chase after them is chilling.

TheSoundOfChaos · 10/09/2023 20:40

@ReeseWitherfork I agree. I don’t understand how so many people with children still allow these breeds in their homes.

If your CKCS attacked your child, you could give it a swift kick and it would stop. With a bully breed it would probably take two people down in minutes .

kitsuneghost · 10/09/2023 20:41

If its the owners not the dogs then we need to start banning dog ownership with the exception of working dogs. We cannot wait until someone is attacked to decide someone is an unsuitable owner.

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 20:42

@Pleasebeafleabite I won’t hold my beer! Will you? Nah thought not.

Personally I’d like to see ownership of all big, powerful dogs phased out. Its unpleasant for people who have to walk past them knowing that they could bite your arm half off if they misread an action and considered you or someone next to you a threat.

Yes, me too. I do not see the logic or comfort in the mantra "it's not the dog's fault, it's the owner's fault". OK - but many dog owners are utter arsewipes who do not know how to control their killer dogs.

It's similar in the states re. guns "it's not a problem unless guns get into the hands of people who are not responsible". SO THEREFORE IT IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE A HUGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE AND SHOULD NOT BE TRUSTED WITH GUNS.

EasternStandard · 10/09/2023 20:43

My god that video

Hecate01 · 10/09/2023 19:24

The owner plays a huge part in how a dog acts. I've been bitten but by a dachshund of all things, and I'm a cat owner so not biased.

An XL Bully was filmed bringing a huge police horse to its knees.

I’d be interested to see a Dachshund manage that.

Wolfiefan · 10/09/2023 20:45

The frothing on these threads is ridiculous. Ban all dogs? Totally unnecessary. If these dogs are banned the people who choose them will move onto something else.
We already have rules against dogs being out of control in public. If a dog makes a person feel scared it’s deemed out of control.
The issue is irresponsible breeders and owners. Sort that.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 10/09/2023 20:45

Good just a few weeks ago a young couple (ide say early 20s) we walking one on lead on opposite side of the road to me. The women had the lead but soon as the dog saw me he was struggling to get away and her partner had to grab the lead off her to stop the dog pelting over to me.
He was struggling with the dog too so can completely see how it could easily over power someone.
It's scary how people can have these animals as pets knowing they could easily over power them causing a fatality.

TheSoundOfChaos · 10/09/2023 20:45

@Soapyspuds Unfortunately, you can not guarantee that any dog, even with the best of owners will not turn. Again, the difference is that bully breeds can maim and kill within minutes. Even the most docile bully dogs do not pose minimal danger because they are capable of serious and fatal injuries.

1AnotherOne · 10/09/2023 20:46

My neighbour has one. It’s never walked. It’s shut up under the stairs most of the day. She says she’s a ‘gentle giant’. The dogs not been spayed and she’s made noises about breeding from her. My neighbour (obviously) does not work, she has all the time in the world to put into this dog. I am waiting for the day she comes pounding my door after her kids get attacked.

it’s the same types of people that own these dogs, even if a ban doesn’t happen they need to put in much stricter laws with regards to breeding.

How?

Did you watch the video, I’m sure anyone would feel traumatised by that - including you?

Ghosttofu99 · 10/09/2023 20:47

I’m read about that… it sounds horrific. Im genuinely scared for my child’s safety out in parks. The health visitor warning me too saying there has been so many attacks on children lately. People take them off lead in the play parks where I live too.

RunningFromInsanity · 10/09/2023 20:47

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 19:47

What would this mean if you have one? as a pet, are responsible and the dog isn’t a danger/ has done nothing?

When they brought in the original banned breed list, existing dogs had to be neutered/spayed, muzzled and on lead in public, registered on a database.
So the theory was that the breed would naturally die out.
Rather than going and rounding up peoples pets and euthanising them.

So claim benefits, breed these dogs….
You’d get ripped to shreds if you posted that on the benefits posts.

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 20:48

@RunningFromInsanity - thanks- I’d support that.

Soapyspuds · 10/09/2023 20:48

The issue is irresponsible breeders and owners. Sort that.

It is nearly impossible to legislate against bad owners. All the tests and paperwork in the world will not prevent the dregs of our society owning these horrific dogs.

Whereas it is very easy to legislate against owning a given breed.

Fallingthroughclouds · 10/09/2023 20:52

Good. I love dogs, but these ones are truly terrifying.

yeah that’s solve the issue @barbie 🙄
