Government to *finally* look at banning XL bullies

Thank goodness. I cannot believe it has taken so long* to even look at banning these awful creatures (I say that as a dog lover). Looks like the viral footage of an XL mauling two men who were trying to defend an 11 year old girl is the straw that broke the camels back.

*policy makers have been captured by the RSPCA/Dog’s Trust etc “it’s not the breed, it’s the owner” dogma

If you ban all bully breeds they will buy german shepherds, rottweilers, dobermans, vislas, northern breeds... and so on and so on until they eventually move on to golden noodles or whatever the fuck ridiculous crossbreed is flavour of the month for the middle-classes.

It. Is. Not. The. Breed.

When you look back at dog attack stats there is a clear pattern that shows a distinct increase in attacks by the current "chosen" breed of a particular "type" of person.

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 20:05

@GigiAnnna Naturally they aren’t that muscular. Well not the type I know you are referring to. We have done that to them. We will do it to something else. We will never stop.

Ostryga · 10/09/2023 20:05

Honestly I want all bully/bull breeds banned.

I know there will be plenty of people saying their one won’t hurt a fly, but that what every single bull breed owner says right before their dog kills their child.

Yes there are injuries and deaths by other dog breeds, but overwhelmingly the deaths and serious harm are caused by bull breeds. And no, it’s not the owners I wish people would stop peddling this ridiculous trope. It is the breed, always.

If a lab bit a child then yes, that would be the owner. Bull breeds are bred to kill violently. Time we stopped pretending otherwise.

@FinnRussell GSD, Rottie, Shepherd dogs, Kingsley dogs, Doberman, all could attack and kill.

If you look at the statistics for fatal attacks it's the bull breeds that dominate. But as I said, make the owner of any dog who kills or maims responsible.

Perfectlystill · 10/09/2023 20:06

Thank god. There are two of these round us and the owners are really aggressive, shouting at you if you try to avoid them in the park.

That certain type of person also likes pugs. I'm aware of how snobbish this sounds. Pugs don't kill people. It's the breed.

wavws · 10/09/2023 20:07

What does this mean practically though? Nothing could come of the tweet

I completely disagree. It is the breed. Predominantly bull breeds, of various type.

Not all are owned by scum bags. A lot, but not all.

Ilovegoldies · 10/09/2023 20:08

I've been bitten by a jack Russell. It luckily only caused a bruise. If it had been a bully xl I'd have had serious injury. I'd support a ban.

Wrapunzel · 10/09/2023 20:09

It is the breed Confused
One gets walked down our local bridleway without a lead by an eight stone woman and she has no chance. She could probably keep hold of a normal dog. She has infant school-aged children with her , too.

Syndulla · 10/09/2023 20:09

Funny how we attribute other characteristics to breeds but not aggression.

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 20:09

@FinnRussell I would agree with that. You breed them you face time. You own them you face time.
If people just stopped breeding them that would be enough. They’d just be no more naturally…
I wouldn’t own one, ever and I’m not advocating getting one/buying a pup.

BigFatLiar · 10/09/2023 20:11

I'd ban them, not because of the danger because I think the snub nosed breeds need to be cleared out, lots of these dogs have breathing issues and it's wrong to push theses breeds.

Pizzanight · 10/09/2023 20:11

It is most definitely the breed and I would support a ban. Yes, morons will buy big scary dogs but this breed are much stronger and capable of killing humans than a rottweiler, German shepherd ect.

TheUsualChaos · 10/09/2023 20:11

The government definitely needs to start taking action on these dangerous breeds however I agree with a PP in that the idiot types that go for these XL bully breeds and the like will simply move on to a different dog to mutate into a new nightmare.

There is huge money involved in breeding these dogs. The gangs involved are not petty criminals. It's big, it's organised and it's scary.

I wish this was posted everywhere!

LorW · 10/09/2023 20:12

Maybe as a starting point they could enforce muzzles on dogs in public? I mean it doesn’t hurt the dog and it can still be walked.

Frequency · 10/09/2023 20:12

How many bull breed types owned by a professional, middle-class couple who walk and supervise it sufficiently have been involved in fatal attacks?

You can write the next fatal attack before it happens...
Bullbreed breed owned by an unemployed young man with a questionable criminal career
New to the home and/or in a strange home
Rarely walked
Owner was not present when the attack started.

If it is a child who is attacked you can 100% guarantee that the child was alone with the dog.

I almost lost my eye to our JRT when I was a teen. Any dog is capable of damage- albeit some more than others. I would never own another JRT. Too small, too quick! Now have a lab.

Not on yesterday's video.

Pitbull forum vs retriever forum. Defo not the breed though.

Government to *finally* look at banning XL bullies
wavws · 10/09/2023 20:14

I can’t lie, I somewhat have personal experience with banned breeds. My brother is 12 years older than me and when I was in primary school, he brought a pit bull puppy home. My parents were against it but also didn’t do anything other than suggest my brother moves out. He moved out around 5 years later. In that time the pit bull attacked other dogs, bit my mum 3 times (quite badly), was extremely aggressive with food/toys/seats so everyone was always walking on egg shells. The entire downstairs was practically a no go area, then the dog was kept in 1 room until it naturally died a decade later. The police were called after my mum was attacked, and my brother said it’s an American staff and the police didn’t do anything. So having lived through that I definitely think there should be more controls and consequences, my brother was a horrific dog owner by inexperience and this breed shouldn’t be any first time dog owner’s choice.

100%
They terrify me, between those and electric scooters the thought of my children walking home from school alone scares me. No one should own a creature they can’t control and over power if needed.
I look at children born into families with them and think poor poor child!

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 20:15

What @LorW and @Frequency said.

The problem with these xl bully attacks is the dog seems to have escaped and then attacked. Owner is awol - are they even chipped? You always read dog destroyed - but never the owners fate.
