Is anyone else struggling to sleep in this heat?

For the fourth night running I’ve woken up in the middle of the night boiling hot and covered in sweat. The upstairs of my house feels like an oven, and I can actually feel the heat hit me when I get to the top of the stairs. I’ve tried everything, keeping the windows and curtains shut during the day and then opening them when the sun goes down, I’ve tried leaving the upstairs windows open to let air circulate . I’ve tried sleeping naked, I’ve slept on top of the covers, I’ve got my fan on all night. Nothing works. I’ve never known heat like this. It’s feel so oppressive and it usually doesn’t bother me as much, but I’m so tired from not getting enough sleep. How are you supposed to sleep in this weather?

I bought some Chillows. I don't put them in my pillow I just lie on them as needed. Seems to cool me down enough. I have two as they warm up pretty fast so I like a cooler one on hand to swap over.

Tell me about it. Cool shower, damp flannel.

Downstairs is far cooler.

You're not the only one!

TokyoSushi · 08/09/2023 13:51

Yep, it's grim, only a couple for nights though and that might be us for the foreseeable.

It was stewing hot here last night.

I've taken to sleeping with just a sheet over me, and the front and back windows open. I'm lucky that I have a draught (east/west) through the bedroom, so as long as I keep both windows open. I'm ok.

BasiliskStare · 08/09/2023 13:54

Yes I am.

some years ago I bought a rubbish / ugly portable air conditioner and without that I am not sure I could sleep. Before that what I would do is Spray a sheet with cold water and lay it over you & may be a little towel in cold water over your feet. Put the fan over the damp sheet. There are some little things which are meant to hold ice cubes for sports people to put on their knees etc , but they do work at the back of your neck etc.

I sympathise - I find it hard to sleep in this hot & humid weather.

Squirrelsnut · 08/09/2023 13:55

I just sleep on the couch with a sheet over me.

TomatoSandwiches · 08/09/2023 13:57

I have four fans on me at night and I'm still sticking to the sheets.

Dampen a flannel and put it in the freezer. Great for popping on your head to cool down. Not stylish, obviously, but who gives a fuck?

I also...erm....borrowed the cats' cool mat for lying on. Along with many other things I specifically bought for them they completely ignore it and prefer to lie on the laminate 🙄

I swim in the rivers and find it takes me ages to get back up to normal temp after swimming. So when it’s really hot I sit in a cold bath before bed. Then I find I stay cool after that for quite a while.

Obviously don’t give yourself hypothermia, but sit in the cold for a while.

HuwEdwardsBottom · 08/09/2023 15:34

Funnily enough I had considered buying one of those cooling mats that you can get for dogs. Could you put one over you? I feel bad moaning because last week I was actually cold in bed 😕

Pop a hot water bottle filled with cold water in the freezer. Make sure it has a cover when you put it in the bed. Really helps

Tonight1 · 08/09/2023 17:18

I just got some ice blocks out of the freezer which came with a food delivery

Uterusbegone · 08/09/2023 17:24

I hate this weather, nothing seems to help - there is no breeze and the temperature is only dropping by a couple of degrees at night so opening windows or using a fan does nothing 🥵

AlisonDonut · 08/09/2023 17:27

I use ice packs for picnics, sometimes getting up at 3am to do a changeover. Use like a hot water bottle in the winter.

Also spray cold water onto the sheet before you get on it, does help.

We had air con put in this year. one unit in living room and one in our bedroom. it’s fabulous (and surprisingly economical to run)

Please could you post a link to the company you used.

We've been opening the loft hatch at night to let the warm air out. DH is sleeping downstairs on the sofa where it's cooler. It means I can starfish out in the bed by myself to cool a bit.

jumperoozles · 08/09/2023 17:45

Open all windows, damp towels hung up, fan on, sleep with just a sheet. I actually wake up a bit chilly in the night after going to bed sweltering.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/09/2023 17:47

keep doing what you’ve doing with windows and curtains.

Sleep just under a sheet and spray it with water before you go to bed.

HuwEdwardsBottom · 08/09/2023 22:21

Ok well I’ve taken the duvet out of the duvet cover and am going to try sleeping under that. I’ve moved my fan so it’s right next to my head. Let’s see if it makes a difference.

I always sleep downstairs when it gets too hot. We have recliners so I just rest on those. It feels like a bit of an adventure at times!

LightSpeeds · 08/09/2023 23:15

Some fucker round here has lit a fire tonight so we've had to shut the windows. Total dickhead!

beeonmybonnett · 08/09/2023 23:18

Try taking a very cold shower before you go to bed OP. It helps you cool down quite a bit.

Also try putting your pillow cases / duvet cover / bed sheets in your freezer before bed as it makes them nice and cool.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/09/2023 23:20

Well I'm dieting but have actually drank white wine tonight because I'm more likely to sleep!!
