Is anyone else struggling to sleep in this heat?

For the fourth night running I’ve woken up in the middle of the night boiling hot and covered in sweat. The upstairs of my house feels like an oven, and I can actually feel the heat hit me when I get to the top of the stairs. I’ve tried everything, keeping the windows and curtains shut during the day and then opening them when the sun goes down, I’ve tried leaving the upstairs windows open to let air circulate . I’ve tried sleeping naked, I’ve slept on top of the covers, I’ve got my fan on all night. Nothing works. I’ve never known heat like this. It’s feel so oppressive and it usually doesn’t bother me as much, but I’m so tired from not getting enough sleep. How are you supposed to sleep in this weather?

We bought a portable air con unit a few years ago. It's ugly, large, guzzles electricity, and is a bit of a prima donna. It's also one of the greatest loves of my life. It cools our room down to 18 from mid-20s within an hour. On really hot nights, DD1 demands to come and sleep in there too as it's the only cool room in the house! It was £400 very well spent.

I've got an ice pack as we speak. I always find I get super hot around 11 for some reason even though the room temp hasn't changed

Whoknowswhatanymore · 08/09/2023 23:30

We have two portable air con units, one upstairs and one downstairs in the main family room/kitchen area. Could not be without them. Eventually we will have air con properly piped into the house as I can see temperature in the UK gradually increasing year on year!

An ice pack always used to help, but now having to sleep downstairs on the not particularly comfy sofa in the north-facing, tiled-floored and draughty kitchen where it’s bareable. Am very jealous of DH who can get to sleep quickly in almost any circumstances.

We had air con put in this year. one unit in living room and one in our bedroom. it’s fabulous (and surprisingly economical to run)

May I ask how much this cost please? I have a condition which makes me overheat, so this is my life 365 days per year!

Open the loft hatch to let the heat travel up and out.

Bonjovispjs · 09/09/2023 00:32

I run my nightshirt under the cold water and wear it damp, stops me sweating immediately and keeps me cool for ages 😊 Read that tip on here 2 or 3 years ago and has worked brilliantly, although some people I have mentioned it to seem opposed to wearing wet clothes, don't really understand why if it keeps them cool? 🤷🏻‍♀️

AlwaysThinkingOfFood · 09/09/2023 00:37

Hello,
I bought cooling gel pillows to help us all sleep. We don't feel the heat as the pillow keeps our heads and necks cool. Give this a try!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 09/09/2023 00:43

I have pyjamas on, a fluffy blanket, and the windows closed or the noise would drive me mad. I don’t own a fan. I’m starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with me.

skinnytobe · 09/09/2023 01:08

Open loft hatch. It works.

Cool gel pillows from Amazon.

Cold shower before bed

I'm working nights this week, prob had a total of 5 hours sleep in three days. I'm hanging out my arse. Still 7 hours to go!

Roselilly36 · 09/09/2023 01:59

Yes hating the heat, making my MS symptoms worse, especially my legs. Can’t sleep. Gave up trying at midnight.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/09/2023 02:05

Lying here drinking lavender tea to try and help me sleep. Fan on full. Can't have windows open as there's too many hornets and wasps around.

Got ridiculously expensive pillows that dp treated us to .. bloody 135 each and supposed to stay cool. Not in this weather they don't.

And the arsehole of a dog keeps trying to lie on me.

Dp is to my left snoring gently away happily. Twat.

CallieQ · 09/09/2023 02:48

Yes.. still awake at nearly 3am 🥺

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 09/09/2023 02:56

I was woken at 1am by my noisy neighbours. It was so unbearable hot and still is… high 20s with no air coming in. Helicopters have been circling overhead for hours to add to it, which is kind of a nice white noise at this point.

AnimatroniA · 09/09/2023 03:04

Yes and I'm pretty sure the heat makes me have nightmares too 😣 But I have to have a blanket covering me, don't like just a sheet.

Happyhappyday · 09/09/2023 03:25

As a child I used to sleep on a sleeping bag on the floor, our house was built into a hill so the bedrooms were downstairs on the slab. Second to the poster who said about going in a river for a swim, I used to swim in the lido extra on hot days and could feel the heat leaving my body, it was glorious!

British houses (apart from thick stone ones!) are a bit shit at any kind of temperature management 🤷‍♀️.

Happyhappyday · 09/09/2023 03:28

Also worth considering heat pumps longer term, if they heat, they also cool. No idea how much they are in the UK, we had an additional one put in to cool about 500 sq feet and it was $15k including the mini split (indoor bit). Portable AC units here are about $500 for a decent one. They are noisy AF though!

WhoWants2Know · 09/09/2023 03:51

I've come downstairs and opened the front and back doors to get a breeze blowing through.

TheGirlFromTomorrow · 09/09/2023 03:57

I hope everyone has their loft hatch open tonight!

Olika · 09/09/2023 04:02

Woke up myself and bed in sweat. Cannot even fall back asleep as I am so hot. Our house traps the heat inside. It's torture.

Southoftheriver32 · 09/09/2023 05:02

Nope. I’m enjoying it, it’s pretty rare we get such warm nights in this country, it will be freezing next week and we’ll be complaining that it’s too cold to sleep!

Dinobooklover · 09/09/2023 06:20

Awake since 4am. No loft hatch as I'm in a flat. Trying to cool it by creating a cross breeze but it isnt really working. Haven't slept properly all week and I feel mentally and physically drained. I would rather be too cold.

BirdiePlantaganet · 09/09/2023 06:24

We had the blinds up on the wide open windows and the door open last night. The cross flow made a difference.

OzDownUnder · 09/09/2023 10:44

Doesn't bother me at all. I sleep with the window open and that's it. Had my nightie on and was wrapped up in my winter duvet as per, might have stuck a leg out every so often

Allywill · 09/09/2023 11:35

Ours cost around 3.5k for a bedroom unit and a living room - the units can be used for either heat or cooling.
