What food can you not stand, that ruins the whole dish?

My worst thing is tarragon. It ruins everything on the plate for me.

Cinnamon, it can cause swelling and breathing difficulties but smells and tastes disgusting.

Basil. Especially pesto as it can't be picked off like leaves can.

Both overused and hidden in otherwise decent food.

GreenTuraco · 08/09/2023 10:17

Nutmeg in savoury dishes, often found chucked in spinach dishes. Ugh repulsive and just wrong

OhamIreally · 08/09/2023 10:31

Star anise

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/09/2023 10:33

Fennel

Twentytwo22 · 08/09/2023 10:37

Hate cinnamon!
I love coriander though.

cheesetoastybut · 08/09/2023 10:38

Raw onions
dill
capers
raisins

Occasionally ginger

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 08/09/2023 10:49

Peoples tastebuds are so different. I love so many of the hated tastes on here... coriander, mint, capers, ginger, eggs, basil, garlic, chillies and many more!

I can't stand tarragon or any sort of pâté though.. and I also don't hate but don't see any point in mozzarella (except for on a pizza and that's more for the texture / look) or cream. They don't have any taste at all for me so a complete Easter of time.

thegreylady · 08/09/2023 10:53

Cucumber
Coriander
Courgette

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 08/09/2023 10:56

*waste of time!

Sorry but peppercorn sauce. Gorgeous steak and mash and they douse it all in it and I want to cry!!

I like it but not all over the steak. I want to regulate how much myself so if it’s offered I ask for it on the side.

Similar to baked beans with an English Breakfast. They need to be in a pot on the side so they don’t infuse every mouthful.

WetBandits · 08/09/2023 11:01

• Lemongrass
• Cinnamon
• Olives
• Star anise

• Gherkins
• Little prawns 🤢 I love king prawns but those creepy little prawns make me heave!

I love coriander, though!

KatherineJaneway · 08/09/2023 11:02

Fruit on savoury dishes

SuperiorM · 08/09/2023 11:04

Slightly different segue here but bacon when the fat hasn’t been rendered. It’s not rocket science to crisp the fat enough so the revolting texture of it disappears. Snotty eggs, same kinda direction

I agree! - there's nothing worse than a bacon butty when there are strips of undercooked white fat hidden inside 🤢😬

Coriander, Chinese 5spice, aniseed, star anise, fenugreek and fennel (no prizes for guessing what flavour I can't stand). broccoli and Stilton combined in a gratin or a soup etc (each separately is fine)

Broccoli and Stilton combo, Chinese 5 spice and fenugreek trigger migraines!

PinkRoses1245 · 08/09/2023 11:11

Truffle oil! Seems common for restaurants to pour it over stuff to make it seem fancy but it's a horrible smell and taste.

Woahtherehoney · 08/09/2023 11:12

God yes fennel 🤢

FluffMagnet · 08/09/2023 11:13

Banana. Just the smell is enough to turn my stomach.

I'm also not a fan of creamy and sharp combos that everyone else raves about - chocolate and strawberries, or cheese with grapes (although I happily eat cheese and pickles, so that makes no sense). Will eat separately but avoid together.

Middleagedmeangirls · 08/09/2023 11:16

Tomato based sauces of the sort often served with pasta - they always taste too sweet and don't have a proper tomato flavour. Also cherry tomatoes - I hate the skins and again, they don't taste enough of tomatoes. Also melted cheese on top of food. Too oily and claggy and not cheesy enough.

These prejudices make ordering in Italian restaurants a challenge.

Catsmere · 08/09/2023 11:23

Mint sauce or jelly or whatever on roast lamb. Disgusting, it gets scraped into the bin immediately.

I have never and will never eat any sort of shellfish. Invertebrates are not for me!

Amwondering69 · 08/09/2023 11:52

Celery
Olives
Pineapple
Apple Sauce

BringOutTheGimp · 08/09/2023 11:53

I love truffle oil now but when I first tried it somehow reminded me of anus… not sure what it says that I persevered with it 😅

Fruit on savoury dishes

Agree and in salads

StorminanDcup · 08/09/2023 11:53

Raw onion.

im fine with cooked, pickled etc.

Raw onion in a salad or sandwich is just the worst

FloweryName · 08/09/2023 11:54

Pesto
