Escaped convict - Anyone else slightly fascinated by how he's escaping capture?

I don't know why but this has captured my imagination. Daniel Khalife escaped prison by clinging to the underside of a delivery van. Now I'm wondering when did he let go? Where did he hide? Is it like the fugitive where he hides in a hen house out house and steals a doctor's uniform from a hospital? Where would you hide if you had to? Where do you get food and water and shelter?

I can’t help but imagine it like a Wes Anderson film, with the music in the background. I think it’s the chefs trousers.

Or Paddington 2. Grin

clarebear111 · 07/09/2023 14:49

I feel like it's something to do with the Russians or similar. Wasn't he there because of official secrets or something?

Or maybe I've been watching too many films.

I was discussing this earlier in a hypothetical way - it's a bit like those Hunted programmes and such. If you had just escaped from prison and were wearing a chef's outfit, and were just say a couple of miles from the prison at the next stop maybe a factory or something, you get out from under the van and then what do you do.

It's about 8am on a weekday. You've got no phone, no money, no ID or credit cards or anything. You're in not an obvious prison uniform, but slightly unusual clothes to be wandering the streets in. What do you do first - get a change of clothes? Where from. Maybe you can steal from a clothes line in a back garden, or a bag left outside a charity shop or clothes donation bin, if you pass one. You could try to shoplift from a charity shop or supermarket or something but the latter puts you on CCTV and at risk of being stopped by security.

You probably need transport - maybe you want to get to family/friends who can help you, maybe you just want to get far away from the prison. Can you just get on a bus or the tube without paying without people noticing? You can't phone a friend for a lift unless you borrow someone else's phone or get a way to pay for a public phone and know the number you're calling. You could try hitchhiking, but people are going to remember seeing someone hitchhiking in a chef's outfit so you'd better have changed clothes!

Without my phone I'd be pretty stuffed even just trying to navigate if it wasn't a bit of my hometown I'm familiar with. Maybe I'd try to steal someone's phone, but biometrics and passcodes mean it probably wouldn't work... I think I'll just stay in prison tbh.

Omg this is exactly where my brain went but you've articulated it far better! I have no idea how I'd survive more than 10 mins without my phone, my cards and unnoticeable clothes. I'd be useless !!

unfortunate typo!

there's no way to do this without the prison guards being in on it...

LlynTegid · 07/09/2023 15:23

I think someone else has been involved, just hope he is found quickly. Prison escapes should not be romanticised.

You are wrong!

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 07/09/2023 15:25

But interested to know what makes you think that?

Silverdogblue · 07/09/2023 15:26

Prisoners who work in prison kitchens wear the sort of clobber you’d expect in any kitchen. Whites with checked trousers etc. just FYI.

Although, usually remand prisoners wouldn’t get a kitchen job due to additional checks/risk assessment… something fishy going on here.

Foxesandsquirrels · 07/09/2023 15:26

@verdantverdure exploratory kicking 😂😂 I'd want to be your cellmate.

Foxesandsquirrels · 07/09/2023 15:27

@tt9 Wouldn't be surprised if there was no prison guards for a while. Germany refused to extradite an Albanian on drug charges just a couple of weeks ago as it would've been inhumane due to the overcrowding and understaffing in our prisons.

How much do you think you'd need to bribe them for it to be worth the risk of ending up an inmate where you've been a guard?

He's an ex-soldier so I would imagine his survival skills are much better than most people.
If he's not hiding out in the wilderness his friends and family and acquaintances from the Army are giving him shelter.

It's that simple, OP.

Give me a minute, I’ll ask him..

Because people in prison don't have access to cash, mobile phones, or even the idea to wear a change of clothes under your chef clothes?

Of course they do.

People navigated cities for centuries without mobile phones.

anon2022anon · 07/09/2023 15:34

Isn't it surprisingly easy to get a phone in prison? And if that's easy, I imagine a bank card is too. I also think he'll have had help/ contact with whoever on the outside has masterminded it.

Lovemycat2023 · 07/09/2023 15:38

Police are saying it wasn’t him they found at Banbury

No. It’s really not easy. Prisoners get scanned in a metal detecting chair which can identify anything they may have secreted. There is very minimal touching allowed between prisoners and visitors, and both are searched. Visitors before visits and prisoners afterwards. That and random searching of both prisoners and cells. It’s really not easy to get a mobile phone or cash into a prison.

It's all very well Alex Chalk and Michelle Donelen ranting on about shoulda-been-Cat-A prisoners being held in Cat B prisons, but there's a shortage of prison places and prison staff owing to government underfunding that they've known about for years.

This government really has some chickens coming home to roost now.

Are the tories still blathering about being the party that’s tough on crime, while at the same time they underfund the prison service because their core voters want to pay as little tax as possible? 🤔

He’s a soldier, would have learned some very useful escaping and hiding skills in the army.

You don’t have to bribe them. You either find one who sympathises with the prisoner’s alleged crime, or you threaten their family or friends.

fairydust11 · 07/09/2023 16:04

I think he’s already out of the country.
I’ll be fascinated if they catch him, from the photos it looks like he could pass for a teenager too, probably making it harder, plus he’s ex military so will know what to do & how to evade capture.

@verdantverdure I said the same thing, wonder where the priority will lie if it turns out an efficient use of a kettle and a strong kick could empty B-wing.
