Escaped convict - Anyone else slightly fascinated by how he's escaping capture?

I don't know why but this has captured my imagination. Daniel Khalife escaped prison by clinging to the underside of a delivery van. Now I'm wondering when did he let go? Where did he hide? Is it like the fugitive where he hides in a hen house out house and steals a doctor's uniform from a hospital? Where would you hide if you had to? Where do you get food and water and shelter?

I have visited HMP Wandsworth and security is very tight. Vans are checked by a mirror underneath. BUT they are extremely short staffed, with a high turnover of young, relatively unskilled staff who don't feel appreciated. The pay is crap so people don't stay for long-plus you are at risk of assault. It was most likely an inside job-someone has been paid to smuggle him out. The governors know that the people most likely to smuggle in contraband are staff. Until we pay prison officers decent wages more of this will happen.

im guessing even with better pay, then depending on the mission other leverage could be used.

theres also the cia skyhook method of recovery

Ah here's the thread! I'm also absolutely fascinated by this.

Err.... well err, yes, there is, and during the Vietnam war for example there are/were all sorts of methods dreamt up for extracting people such as downed aircrew from behind the lines but they rarely if ever became operational.

I think for this case we maybe could put that sort of idea on the back burner unless/until we hear reports of tethered barrage ballons flying over the home counties and low flying aircraft racing around the UK trailing a large trapeze.

Having been both in the army (17 years) and in prison (3months), this thread is making me laugh and roll me eyes in equal measure.

SERE is literally a video designed to stop us embarrassing ourselves like we did when the Navy soldiers got captured by the Iranians. It’s like Boy Scout level survival. Unless your man escaped with a clear plastic bag and a mirror, and he is TRYING to be found by the police, it will be no use to him at all.

He won’t have special skills from being in the signals.

I would be amazed if he has any genuine “national secrets” which are useful to Iran and information about his colleagues from JPA is probably less useful than a trawl on Facebook.

Colchester is a military prison for military personnel convicted in military courts.
The army can immediately discharge anyone charged with a civilian criminal offence (like immediately) and I suspect this is what happened to this lad.

Whoever said prison escapes happen all the time is just fearmongering. Absconding from an open prison (i.e. not returning by curfew) is very different from escaping from prison. And whoever said they used to hear escaped prisoners scampering across their roof wants to get a job writing for the DM.

viques · 09/09/2023 09:37

I was a bit wtf? at the description of him saying he was wearing steel toe cap boots. I don’t know if the description was accurate but if I was a prison officer I wouldn’t want any prisoners to be wearing heavy, potentially dangerous boots like that. Sliders or flip flops only.

As others have said, he is being helped and supported, if not by family then by people who support his views. I hope when he and they are caught then they are severely punished for their actions.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/09/2023 09:39

Just being reported now he’s been spotted in Chiswick. Whether that’s him or not though…

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/09/2023 09:41

Apparently there have been sightings in SW London.

This is all very strange, if he was a spy then why is he hiding in parks? I would have thought they would have extracted him by now?

He's no spy! He's the weird at school who fancied himself as a spy and wanted to get out of the army by planting an obviously fake ( like primary school level fake) bomb to get discharged.

HRTQueen · 09/09/2023 09:43

I think this is more of an embarrassment than a high security risk

it’s only a few weeks ago that hundreds of names and address of people who are truly possible targets was leaked online not once but twice

prisoners often abscond from open prisons/secure hospitals usually when on unescorted leave but that’s completely different

notimagain · 09/09/2023 09:44

Hawkins0009 · 09/09/2023 09:36

Yes I know about that and you can see what I meant by a trapeze - all a bit hard to hide over Chiswick and the home counties.

FML. A fucking spy. He was the most junior of soldiers, he wouldn’t even have been able to decide when he had a coffee break by himself. 🤦🏽‍♀️

depends on whos' watching the skys, at a guess
obviously seems an unlikely method but these days who knows

deuxgarcons · 09/09/2023 09:52

I'm in Chiswick and it was hours of helicopters last night and they're up again now. Not sure where he'd be hiding although I'll skip going to the local park today

Err, UK ATC mainly for cooperating traffic and the UK still has an Air Defence system of sorts with radars just in case somebody decides not to cooperate.

The light aircraft theory ex-UK is possible, but something similar to a C-130 arriving over the UK, doing a low level Fulton pick up and then heading off again....nope, you need another theory.

Pixiedust49 · 09/09/2023 09:54

Do you think if he is found, he’ll be found alive?

Because I think he was more wannabe than actual asset. He possibly had lots of sympathisers but, to quote Avon (a Blake's 7 reference), all they do is sympathise.

He may have tried to contact a group and been turned away. His value as a spy was being an 'inside man'. He blew that, he's now a liability.

Pixiedust49 · 09/09/2023 09:54

He'll be found on his mates sofa playing video games and eating pizza.

Although any mates willing to harbour him are extremely foolish.

TokyoSushi · 09/09/2023 09:57

I think he'll be found today, or at least by the end of the weekend.

I don't for a minute think he's a national security threat, I think he's just a silly boy with big ideas. Let's see...

Why run them?

He was going to have trial in a Crown Court, with a jury, so a high chance of acquittal.
