I know that Mumsnetters tend to hate Aldi...

....for reasons that escape me. But PSA-the macarons are absolutely delicious. Better than the super posh ones I've had.

I may have just had the last raspberry one for breakfast.

I don't think MNers hate Aldi en masse. Some love it, some hate ir, and some aren't fussed either way.

CantThinkOfANewUsernameAgain · 08/09/2023 21:08

I love it.
Yes there's the odd thing that goes off quick but same with any supermarket.

I love their nice fishcakes lemongrass ones.
Their chocolate snap things inna tube like Pringles. ( may have eaten 3 boxes since Monday)
Their cola

VeloVixen · 08/09/2023 21:11

I love Aldi.

never had a problem with fruit or veg going off. Never had a problem with bad meat. So much good stuff. Just wish they delivered.

there’s so much stuff of theirs I prefer to branded, yoghurts, cereal bars, bread, bread rolls, hash browns, pizzas. Yes the macarons are lush.

wish they did gf stuff like pasta and bread.

I found it a big disappointment when i tried it. I dont really have a local one so went a couple of times for a "special shop" and was very underwhelmed. Their knock off Belvita are some of the worst biscuits I have ever tasted.

I prefer Lidl but the nearest one you have to queue for the car park!

chatelai · 08/09/2023 22:08

I love both Lidl and Aldi for several things:

  1. Weird or surprising wine. Now I'm drinking again in moderation I'm a bit fussy about wine also being an experience. (Pretentious, moi?) I recently bought a random bottle of Chinese red, which was exceptional, and a bottle of Greek chardonnay, ditto. Typing this accompanied by a glass of Aldi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Nice. Cost about £6.

  2. My new old house smelled a bit of sweaty middle-aged-boyfriend (not mine). Its signature scent is now Aldi's posh* citrus and patchouli reed diffuser.
    *under a tenner

  3. Ice cream mochi. The cheesecake one.

  4. the one-off stuff.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 08/09/2023 22:15

Aldi for me is a bit like Costco. I go in to buy one or two good value items and then end up spending absolutely loads on what doesn’t seem like all that much food. In fact I spent £70 today and didn’t seem
to buy anything except snacks and a few chicken breasts. And the peanut butter I went in for.

Anyway I love macarons so will look
for those next time, thanks OP!

Never seen any Aldi hate in here. Is there a MN anti-Aldi vibe?

I've only ever seen Aldi love

goodkidsmaadhouse · 08/09/2023 22:21

Actually has anyone tried the apple autumn
spice fabric softener? Saw it in the middle aisle and couldn’t work out whether it would be revolting or pleasing on clothes.

FedUpMumof10YO · 08/09/2023 22:21

I've never seen any Aldi hate.

Catsmere · 09/09/2023 03:44

I don't know how the UK Aldi compares with the Australian one, but I love Aldi here and do my main shopping there. It's SO much cheaper than Coles or Woolworths. I only go to them for things Aldi don't stock now (tofu cat litter, the carrot cake Mum likes and Wettexes. For some reason Aldi don't have those sort of wipes).

Also their own brand of dark chocolate is just the best.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/09/2023 03:54

Yes they are

daisychain01 · 09/09/2023 03:55

I don't hate Aldi or Lidl, but whenever I've been in there, it does seem to sell more than its share of ultra processed foods. And the fact the brands aren't recognisable means the quality of ingredients won't be good. Everything in boxes and packets. It might be cheap but at what price health? it would be better to buy from Tesco, Sainsbury or a market and at least get a choice of fresh unprocessed ingredients.

Boohoo the macarons aren't veggie😭

I did get some strawberry's that look nice so will see if their fresh produce is better than it used to be!

Yes they are

I've been an Aldi shopper for years but this year I've noticed they aren't the cheapest for everything. Sometimes I can find cheaper in Asda. Nothing to do with deals, just own brand things (dried pasta etc). It's annoying as I used to be able to do 90% of my shopping there but now I feel I have to check prices a lot more as I shop as I can't assume Aldi are the cheapest like I believe they used to be. They're also annoyed me in the last month with their baked beans. Used to be 4 tins for £1.35, bulk buy at the check out. I think they were 39p or 40p each. In the last month those tins have disappeared, tins with new labels have come out instead (still their own brand, just different packaging) 49p per tin now and the bulk buy option has disappeared!! 😡 That's a 25% increase on the per tin price! Nearly £2 for 4 tins of Aldi beans when it wasn't that long ago you could get Heinz or Branston beans for 50p a tin when on offer. DH found Tesco's own beans tonight for 28p per tin so bought me a tin to try after my moaning this week about Aldi beans 😂 It just makes me less trusting of Aldi and not to assume - like I once could - they are always reasonably priced. I think they're getting greedy too.

I think their toiletries, cleaning and laundry products are the opposite of “shite”. I rarely buy those things anywhere else.

I love the Almat washing powder - cheaper than most and really effective.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/09/2023 04:00

Lidl and co-op prices have gone up.lots too. Heinz soup is more expensive in the co-op than waitrose.

NoSaladThanks · 09/09/2023 05:00

I shop at Aldi mainly for meat, the dogs chewies and cleaning stuff. Their loo roll is excellent value at just over £7 for 24 rolls, good quality thick stuff too.
