I know that Mumsnetters tend to hate Aldi...

....for reasons that escape me. But PSA-the macarons are absolutely delicious. Better than the super posh ones I've had.

I may have just had the last raspberry one for breakfast.

Like it… I think the middle aisle could contain some useful like more choice of FOOD though :)

Polis · 07/09/2023 08:51

There is a lot of Aldi hate. All the fruit and veg is rotten apparently

I find some of their fruit and veg is a bit far gone at times.

I still shop in Aldi. I don’t hate it.

EquallyDetermined · 07/09/2023 08:51

I don't go there that much because its quite a long way and the car park is a bit of a nightmare but I like their washing powder because its barely fragranced, its good for all the basics (dairy, fruit and veg apart from soft fruit which does go off too fast, store cupboard stuff like flour and sugar). Generally avoid the more processed stuff though, the frozen pizza was the worst I'd ever tasted, we don't like the table sauces, things like pickled onions are really watery, the tinned tuna likewise.

I have a conspiracy theory that Waitrose pay Mumsnetters to post knocking copy......

Maybe because Aldi pay much better than waitrose and john lewis staff or partners as they are called and they dont want to loose staff as well as customers

Pleaseme · 07/09/2023 09:19

I bought the macarons. I thought they were supposed to be crispy on the outside but whole thing seemed soft and chewy. Tasted nice but I would not rush out to repurchase. Dc liked them.

Generally a big Aldi fan though.

Middle aisle is the best thing about Aldi! It lures me in otherwise I’d just get Tesco deliveries.

Or, more likely…. their fruit and veg can be a bit far gone.

Why would they do that?

Lack of choice is part of their business model. Makes the supply process much more efficient and a lot of time, it's what customers prefer because it makes shopping quicker and easier.

If you want to choose from 30 different types of tinned tomatoes, instead of about 3 in Aldi, go to Tesco.

Never seen any Aldi hate in here. Is there a MN anti-Aldi vibe?

Usually just from the Range Rover / Waitrose types - the majority of MN think Aldi is a fantastic place to shop.

sparkedsparkle · 07/09/2023 09:23

I like the breakfast range - deffo the cereal and breakfast bars and the off brand pop tarts are a hit with the kids. Meat from there is nice but the bread is a complete let down

CurryandSnuggle · 07/09/2023 09:25

I love Aldi and their fruit/veg section is just as good as other supermarkets in our local one. I am not a fan of Lidl, the fruit & veg is always bashed up, on its way out and gross.

RandomButtons · 07/09/2023 09:26

I don’t see the fuss about Aldi, but don’t hate it. Just never seem to save money there over buying Tesco own brand, and you get ten times the choice in Tesco.

CurryandSnuggle · 07/09/2023 09:26

Aldi does the best vegetarian range. Their veggie battered sausages are absolutely delicious!

Primproperpenny · 07/09/2023 09:27

I like Aldi for some things but where we are, there is a different vibe depending on where the store is. The original one in the grotty area of town is grotty as. It’s filthy and I avoid it. The one in the leafy MC town about half an hour away is lovely - nice and shiny, big aisles, good parking. Feels like a different store and a very different clientele.

AlltheFs · 07/09/2023 09:30

Aldi love here! And Lidl. We do a mix of Lidl and Aldi for the main shop and a few bits from Tesco.

We particularly like the Aldi toiletries. I swapped to a few of their products from
branded ones and found them
great. Lidl dishwasher tablets are the best though.

Locally to us the Aldi fruit and veg shelf life is crap. Lidl is better but not as good as Tesco.
I think it varies hugely though by area, I was told by friend’s daughter ghat works in our local Aldi that they don’t manage their fresh deliveries very well so that might explain why some stuff goes off.

FlowerTink · 07/09/2023 09:31

I love Aldi! We swapped over from ASDA due to CoL and have never looked back.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 07/09/2023 09:31

I love Aldi, but I do notice a difference between stores tbh, like a PP saying about aisle width. but also meat quality. I am in Scotland and the meat from aldi is fine, but when we bought meat from an English aldi it wasnt great, that that was a few different packs. They do make a thing about having scottish products, so maybe the Scottish meat they supply is better than what they offer for sale in England?

I do love a lot of their products, a few mentioned above, and the bread is great, 55p thats better than Warburtons, their max cola is also good too

WaltzingWaters · 07/09/2023 09:45

I love Aldi. Will have to try their macarons.
I actually think all their fruit and veg is great quality and rarely had issues with it going off too quickly (certainly no more than any other supermarket fruit and veg). Their other products are brilliant too. Best nappies too.

User16328715 · 07/09/2023 09:52

If they delivered, then I might try them but I don't tend to shop in supermarkets as I prefer home delivery

notforever · 07/09/2023 09:58

I haven't tried the macarons, don't know if I could get them home in time before they defrosted but I love macarons so might pop in for some later. I have had the M&S ones and one's from TK Maxx but they were crap compared to the ones I have had fresh from Laudree or even made myself.

I usually don't like Aldi as I found the quality of the fruit and veg to be inferior to sainsburys, M&S or waitrose but they have some nice biscuit's and chocolate and Lidl has a nice bakery.

BIossomtoes · 07/09/2023 10:00

Lidl’s Portuguese tarts are to die for. Absolutely delicious.

RustyBear · 07/09/2023 10:13

According to DD and all her friends on Peanut, Aldi’s Mamia nappies are the best ‘even better than the leading brand’ as the ads say.

pickledandpuzzled · 07/09/2023 10:35

Thank you @Carpediem15

Perhaps mine was just having an off day. As I say, I'm a bit nomadic, supermarket wise. It just seemed really limited in comparison to previous visits.

C8H10N4O2 · 07/09/2023 10:43

I think it must vary by branch. I don't see Aldi hate on here - most posts are positive and raving about the great cleaning stuff, meat etc. When Aldi opened near us I thought I'd finally get the goodies I'd been reading about.

I gave it three goes and and each time the produce was both really poor quality in terms of taste and lasted five minutes - more went in the compost than was eaten. Twice the eggs had at least one completely rotten (black when cracked). I've never had that from a supermarket before and when I went back with a picture and the receipt I was underwhelmed by the response (when they could finally find the only person allowed to deal with it).

I hear their cleaning stuff is good but that isn't enough to get me back into a store when I prefer delivery anyway. (and I'm neither a Range Rover owner nor a Waitrose devotee).
