....for reasons that escape me. But PSA-the macarons are absolutely delicious. Better than the super posh ones I've had.

I may have just had the last raspberry one for breakfast.

Never seen them but thanks for the tip. How much?

PuppyMonkey · 07/09/2023 12:17

Hang on I need to get my Aldi thread bingo card out - have we had totally maggot ridden chicken yet? Grin

Aldi’s Australian Chardonnay (limestone coast or whatever it currently calls itself, it likes to change every few years) has never been surpassed in about 13 years of me buying it and comparing it to others. Best wine ever, the end.

Coastalcreeksider · 07/09/2023 12:28

I haven't tried the macarons but at Christmas I always buy a box of their florentines. They are so gorgeous.

LadyKenya · 07/09/2023 12:32

I shop in Aldi sometimes, but only for cleaning products mainly, and things like crisps. I tried their fruit/veg, a couple of times, and was not impressed. The bag of potatoes that I got was full of potatoes that had more eyes than anything else. By the time I had peeled, and cut out the bad bits, it definitely was not money saved for me.

LaaDeeDa321 · 07/09/2023 12:34

I bought two boxes yesterday. They’re delicious.

NannyGythaOgg · 07/09/2023 12:49

If anyone is - I would have M&S as first suspect - they definitely have a valid motive

OvaHere · 07/09/2023 12:50

I have an Aldi within a short walk from me. I do a shop at Aldi for the things I like then top up with a Sainsbury's delivery for things I can't get or deem better quality.

I know it's a bit of a faux pas on here to criticise Aldi but I do avoid their raw chicken products after too many incidents with them being off. No issues with other meat and I always buy mince there now after Sainsbury's started selling the weird mince paste.

The other 'criticism' which is entirely on me is that I do end up buying more yummy stuff than is good for me. More than I would buy if I just shopped at Sainsbury's.

Talking of Aldi yummy stuff has anyone else tried the new ice cream/sorbet balls wrapped in rice paper?

Not actually that cheap but they are heavenly and allegedly only 84 calories each. Not tried all the flavours but current order of favourite is Coconut, Raspberry Cheesecake and Salted Caramel.

The Salted Caramel was all gone the other day so clearly other people have discovered them. Seriously, go buy some and you can thank me later. 😁

My vegan son loves the mango ones and is severely pissed off that the other flavours aren’t vegan.

pickledandpuzzled · 07/09/2023 13:22

So I need another visit for the ice cream balls and the cola with lime. Ok.

The own brand decaf ground coffee is good, when I can get it. Very cheap.

Not tried Mango yet. They're about £3.50 for 6 so I only buy one and always default to my preferred flavours. I probably should try them all at some point.

MN loves Aldi. It’s somehow woven in to any thread as the answer to anything.

OP: “can anyone give me some advice, I’ve been bitten by a shark and lost my arm?”
MN: “have you tried shopping in aldi?”

Love this 🤣🤣🤣

To be fair you’d probably be able to get a replacement in the aisle of shite…

BasicPumpkinSpice · 07/09/2023 13:33

I like the continental products and deli selection. But everything else is a bit hit or miss. The fruit and veg is ok if used quickly, but I've never had it last a week. The cereal just tastes strange. I wish I could use the skincare but it's too highly fragrances for me.

I don't drink or eat desserts/afters and they tend to be highly recommended on here.

I think a lot depends on what you eat and your local shop

Gjendefloooo · 07/09/2023 13:55

I love Aldi. I shop in Germany (live just over the border in another country). There are two Aldis within reach - one of them is small, always rammed and a bit chaotic but the other one is amazing - wide aisles, reasonably quiet, great selection of food and it costs 30% less than where I live.
The fruit and vegetables are excellent in Aldi. In the town I live in, in the other non-discounter supermarkets, the fruit and veg is rotten a lot of the time.
Sometimes I need to buy some things that I can't get at Aldi but it's not a problem I just call into another supermarket in Germany on the way home.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/09/2023 14:05

I love Aldi and find all their products good quality
The Greek yogurt with honey is the best I've ever tried
I love it even more as they've just installed a row of self scan checkouts
Local one is always clean and tidy

notforever · 07/09/2023 14:22

Boohoo the macarons aren't veggie😭

I did get some strawberry's that look nice so will see if their fresh produce is better than it used to be!

BogRollBOGOF · 07/09/2023 14:49

My local Aldi is older and smaller. The fresh produce can often be depleted or have a short shelf life. I've started going to a different, newer branch in passing and it is nicer and more reliable.

I don't know what my branch does with bananas, but I gave up trying to buy them a long time ago.

I generally like the quality of most stuff though, I like the prices, and also I can get the majority of a week's shop in 20 minutes with occasional top-up shops elsewhere for other items not stocked.
They also don't have awful, claustrophobic cluttery banners and bunting everywhere.

piscofrisco · 07/09/2023 14:54

I love Aldi and Lidl. I often walk round. There with the older lady I volunteer with on weekends. We love the pastries and a trip down the middle aisle!

Lorrymum · 07/09/2023 14:58

I always hated the lengthy queues but our local branch has installed self service as well as manned tills. No more queues.

Daisyislazy · 07/09/2023 15:07

Some things are good and some aren't , I don't like their fresh fruit and veg

Floralnomad · 07/09/2023 15:14

Ifailed · 07/09/2023 07:53

Aldi is like all the other supermarket chains, some of their stuff is great (value and quality), some of it's average and some of it's crap.
There's really nothing special about it now.

This exactly . I’ve never seen much Aldi hate on here , it’s more the other way on threads I’ve seen . I bought a very nice , and very competitively priced whacker plate on Aldi online but I don’t like the actual supermarket mainly because I shop in Marks and Tesco where I can scan and shop .

pickledandpuzzled · 08/09/2023 14:32

Very disappointed. Went to Aldi specifically from this thread- yay, chia and linseeds! Boo, no lime cola.

Classic Aldi experience. Although I didn't buy the obligatory surfboard.

Nutterjacks · 08/09/2023 15:06

I shop in Aldi for certain things. Love the dupe Lurpak butter Nordpak, tastes better too.
Their laundry products are as good as the top branded more expensive ones. Especially love the So soft luxurious fabric softener, lily bloom and lime fragrance - smells heavenly!

ALMAT and fake lurpak are on my list.
