What’s your smallest fear?

Mimmy352 · 06/09/2023 19:29

We all know the common biggest fears: Dying, losing loved ones, spiders, etc

But what’s your smallest fear? The type of fear that has no bearing on your life other than being this strange little thing you worry about/dislike?

Mine is fish, and fish tanks. Why? Because there’s no such thing as a clean fish. They swim around in water and form that weird little congealed coating that being in water too long creates, and once they enter a fish tank, that fish tank is never clean again - no matter how hard you try. I hate fish.

I do, however, love sushi

Overtaking a high-sided lorry on a dual-carriageway/motorway on a windy day 😳 Had one get blown into my lane one time and it still scares me now.

Also, I hate following car transporters in case the cars start to roll off! Highly unlikely, but still....

I don't like driving next to lorries. I hate it when they're doing roadworks and narrow the lanes, and you're coming up to a concrete bridge so it seems like you have zero room and there's a lorry keeping pace next to you.

In my head, I'm always a little bit surprised and relieved that my car doesn't end up crushed.

I never look into a mirror when I am in a dark room. You never know what is behind you in the reflection.

SunshineAndFizz · 07/09/2023 02:39

Touching cash machine buttons. They never get washed (in my head anyway).

I bend my fingers and use the knuckle to tap instead of the ends of my fingers like a normal person.

Posting my keys when I post a letter.

One of those freak animal attacks, like a monkey stealing your keys or a squirrel making off with the tenner in your hand. Seems unlikely. Though a friend had an unfortunate incident with a fox and a wallet recently, so perhaps not that far-fetched?

A friend of mine was once having a nap on his sofa and woke up to see a fox running out of the patio doors with his trousers in its mouth.

My DM did that - didn’t notice till she got home and tried to open the door with a letter….

Posting my keys when I post a letter.

I once binned my keys instead of the dog poo bag. Fortunately in a fullish general waste bin with something inoffensive on the top layer so I was able to retrieve them.

All sharp knives must be put away in the drawers overnight in case a madman comes and murders us with them (madmen apparently don't know how to open cutlery drawers).

This is exactly me too! 😂

Reading the thread I probably have around 90% of these fears 😂 it's a wonder I'm not a shivering wreck going about my daily business...

PepsiMaxLime · 07/09/2023 08:25

Those tall water towers in America with the spindly legs. Often they’ll have the name of the town on and they’re usually shown during creepy scenes when there’s been a murder/ about to be a murder or when a body is about to be discovered.

I love true crime so not sure why they freak me out so much but they give me the heebie jeebies.

toadasoda · 07/09/2023 08:34

When I drive into a car park with one of those overhead horizontal bars I get really nervous in case it takes the roof off my car, although I know this is impossible. I also duck my head down as I go under like an idiot.

A massive pubey chin hair and no tweezers to be found!

I’ve found my people…
😂😂😂
I have a tweezers in my room, bathroom, car, purse, at all times. Literally multiple different ones just ready to go if I need one

A pleasure to meet a fellow bearded lady 😅

Raw chicken!! Although it's a borderline big fear for me- I only handle raw chicken with disposable gloves and have a strict routine of anti bacing all surfaces they've gone anywhere near, the knife, chopping board etc.

My other is baked beans. They're vile and I can't touch them or the sauce they come in. I'm fine with those beans in other contexts but not from the tin. And cold baked beans are even more criminal.

mistymistymorning · 07/09/2023 09:32

Falling into our septic tank! It's on a small section of lawn that I have to cut and I'm terrified the ground will give way and I'll fall in and drown in slurry (I blame those countryside awareness adverts when I was a kid).

GR8GAL · 07/09/2023 10:16

Horseflies.

I've been bitten before and it's not pleasant. One even chased me into a shed some years ago before biting me on the leg, I still have scars from horsefly bites years on!

Actually its not a small fear, its a legitimate fear. They're disgusting, and those bites hurt!

peakedatseven · 07/09/2023 10:28

The train station near my house has quite a big gap between the train and the platform. I’m forever terrified I’ll fall into it.

Also, when I wait at traffic lights to cross the road I always think I’m going to fall into oncoming traffic.

I don’t fall often enough to have these fears.

This is me too!

Of course, if the madman did find the cutlery drawer, he would have a nice array of knives to choose from.

Libelil · 07/09/2023 11:05

Thought of another one - half-submerged houseboats. Saw one once on a canal in Amsterdam. Gives me the absolute creeps. I live up a hill, so the chances of all my belongings disappearing under water are pretty much zero, but that's where my darkest fears seem to lie! Half submerged feels worse than fully underwater, god knows why.

blueshoes · 07/09/2023 11:07

Before I go to bed, I set the screens on my mobile phones to the phone setting and have one phone next to me (with the other one charging). This way, if I encounter a burglar in the house, I would panic but can immediately reach for the phone and dial 999 without looking for the phone app.

Assuming the burglar has not already stabbed me with my own knife in my cutlery drawer ...

Arg! Very good point. Maybe I'll have to start hiding them under the floorboards. But then also quite awkward to retrieve when I need to chop the onions.

I have never seen a half-submerged house boat. That would give me the creeps too.

Speaking of water, I have a fear of the sea and dark water. I cannot fathom that the body of water has no bottom (or one that is very far down). When the Titanic sank, it just went down and down and down into the dark depths until it hit the ocean floor in complete darkness. <Shiver>

Spookymormonhelldream · 07/09/2023 11:14

OK great now I have 120 small fears 😁

dudsville · 07/09/2023 11:16

I think the sea is disgusting as it's one big sea creature toilet, we also as humans dump our waste there, but it's not a small fear, just a grim reality. My small, or most unrealistic fear is, as someone mentioned above, that I will be attacked by a wild animal, like a cheetah, whilst alone in my garden of an evening. I live in England sothis is unrealistic.

Once, as a student who spent so much time inthe library, I temporarily developed a fear of going back down the stairs I'd successfully gone up and down many times. I think I was strung out on too much coffee.

Being stuck in a portaloo and it tips over with the door down. It hasn't happened yet but it's a worry every time I use those things.

Same ! 🤢

Dropping my keys or phone down a drain. Never done it but I get so paranoid and have to hang on to my things if I walk over one.

I did this once outside my house, it was dry and I hooked them out with a coat hanger.
