How did it compare to your child's packed lunch now?

A ham sandwich on white bread (cheap ham from netto)

Penguin,

And a packet of chip sticks

The option didn't exist. School lunches or you went home for lunch.
Born in the late 60's so at school early 70's.

Sirzy · 06/09/2023 19:19

Ham or jam sandwich

packet of crisps

penguin type biscuit

tub of grapes or similar.

flask of squash.

Not massively dissimilar actually! Salami sandwiches or a thermos of soup, fruit and veg, yogurt, maybe a biscuit if I was lucky. I send a thermos more often than a sandwich as they always want cured meat and I don’t like them to eat too much of it. Otherwise it’s about the same.

CMOTDibbler · 06/09/2023 19:19

I was only allowed to have a packed lunch once at secondary school and my mums rule was that she wasn't going to buy anything extra (tbf, she got a free meal at work and dad got a massively discounted one so it would have been much better for us to have hot lunch at school) and that if asked we had to say that she had nothing to do with the contents of said lunch. For 3 years I had ryvita with sandwich spread and an apple.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 06/09/2023 19:20

I was always embarrassed about mine as my parents were (in my eyes) health freaks and I always got a boring lunch Grin

Sandwiches on brown bread. Normally vegemite, peanut butter or cheese.
Sunmaid raisins.
Fruit (which I never ate)
Babybel.
Petit Filous.

Never crisps, sweets or chocolate - ever.

Enjoyingthesedays · 06/09/2023 19:20

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and my packed lunch was a marmite sandwich, a wagon wheel or a viscount biscuit and a bottle of panda pop.

My favourite school dinner consisted of 3 smiley faces and 2 hot dog sausages.

Paste sandwich on white bread, chocolate biscuit and a packet of crisps. This was day in day out for my entire primary school life. My son is not at school yet but no way will his lunch look anything like what I used to have.

Glovesandscarf · 06/09/2023 19:23

Sandwich cheese usually sometimes with pickle or marmite or sometimes peanut butter.
yoghurt, crisps some kind of cake or biscuit usually homemade, piece of fruit, juice carton (very exciting when it was tropical) and not all of these at once. Actually pretty similar to my kids packed lunches now. Not all the things every day. But never peanut butter & they mostly have school lunch

Beamur · 06/09/2023 19:24

My Mum loved making my packed lunches. I think a lot of love went into them. They were far superior to everyone else's and she was always trying new ideas out on me. I had fancy sandwiches, hot things in flasks, and always something sweet (best bit).
My DD on the other hand has always liked a very plain lunch. Typical would be some baguette, carrot sticks and cheese. Box of juice and something sweet like a small cake or biscuit. Plus dried fruit. Every day.

WeWereInParis · 06/09/2023 19:24

Cheese sandwich

Apple/grapes/banana/pear

Some sort of home baked thing we'd make on Sundays eg flapjack, brownie, cake traybake type thing. A biscuit if we didn't have this.

ArcticBells · 06/09/2023 19:24

Can't remember the contents but I do remember that my mother changed from anchor butter to newly discovered spread that had a cheesy tang

budgiegirl · 06/09/2023 19:26

Mum used to make up a wide-neck flask of tinned ravioli or spaghetti hoops for me to take to school, with bread and butter, and sometimes a hard boiled egg (she'd also put in a tin-foil twist of salt for the egg). Plus fruit, penguin/kitkat.

Robinbuildsbears · 06/09/2023 19:26

Smart price chocolate spread on smart price brown bread, bag of smart price crisps, smart price biscuit bar and a box of raisins. Was underfed at home, so would frequently sneak inside at morning break and steal babybels, cheesestrings or frubes from other kids lunches.

DemelzaandRoss · 06/09/2023 19:27

A cheese sandwich, or corn beef. Packet of crisps. Petit Filous x2, Mr Kipling cake!!

orchardsquare · 06/09/2023 19:28

Sandwiches - I think usually cream cheese, cheese or tuna.
Yoghurt or mousse etc
Penguin biscuit, club, gold bar etc
Tangerine or apple
I can't remember taking a drink think we just had the water that school provided

When mine had packed lunches, it was very similar except no yoghurt and they took cartons of orange juice.

Enjoyingthesedays · 06/09/2023 19:28

Some of these sound quite healthy and quite fancy. I thought mine was normal for the times with my one sandwich and biscuit.

My parents were brilliant at introducing me to classical music, history, literature, art, other cultures, fashion, politics, fun, foreign food and many other things.

They were SHIT at packed lunches.

I got a cheese sandwich on brown bread.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 06/09/2023 19:30

I always had Red Leicester cheese on mighty white bread. Packet of skips. Chocolate mousse. That’s what I remember anyway. Don’t recall any fruit!

I got really lazy with lunches and spent too much on school dinners last year so trying to start the year as we mean to go on. Tomorrow primary school DC has mini cheddars with circles of cheese, and mini cookies (requested a “Snackers” box which I refused so made an equivalent), carrot sticks, some mango and a smoothie. High school DC has leftover Mac and cheese with hidden veg, wagon wheel, carrot sticks and smoothie.

Pixie2015 · 06/09/2023 19:30

Tomatoe ketchup or beef paste sandwich on white sunbless bread - biscuit loved trio or club days hated penguin or Kit Kat days - crisps - possible an apple and flask of Kiora - food served in vitalite box 😂

MarshyMcMarshFace · 06/09/2023 19:31

Primula cheese spread with shrimps in sandwiches
An apple pie. Like Mr Kipling but they were called Harvest Pies.

Sometimes an orange or apple I think.

My Dc’ packed lunches were more varied, creative and healthy.

VeridicalVagabond · 06/09/2023 19:33

Ham, cheese, tuna and cucumber, or cheese and pickle sandwich, two pieces of fruit, a babybel, a fruit winder or a club/penguin/KitKat/Yo-yo/wagon wheel.

As I got older I went through a Japanese phase and my dear old dad, bless his heart, tried his best to make Bento boxes for me with noodles, rice, stir fry etc.

My daughter's lunch boxes were very similar to my old Bento boxes. She's much better at making them than I ever was so makes her own now, with all these fancy little things like onigiri and dango.
