How did it compare to your child's packed lunch now?

A sandwich, an apple, a packet of crisps.

I only ever had packed lunches for one week in the whole time I was at primary in the 80s - school kitchen was closed for something.

It was so exciting. I had the same every day:

Dairylee sandwich on white bread
Viscount biscuit
Um-Bongo juice carton

One day my dad cut the sandwiches into stars with a biscuit cutter. I was in heaven - so fancy! But then mum complained and said it was silly and it didn't happen again. Back to rectangles.

One flask of squash
One digestive biscuit
Sometimes a piece of cheese.

Dm found that was all I would eat at school and decided it was better I had what I ate than took a lunch and brought it back uneaten.

Dsis had:
2x filled rolls or 8 sandwiches
1 flask of soup
Sausage roll
1 piece of cake
1 yoghurt
2 pieces of fruit.

Either a billy bear ham sandwich or if I was unlucky, Dairylea sandwich (always hated the stuff but Mum still bought it) with a penguin biscuit, packet of crisps, maybe a piece of fruit I’d usually not bother with and a yoghurt.

Kindofcrunchy · 08/09/2023 13:56

Crunchy peanut butter sandwich, crisps, apple, chocolate bar, bottle of squash. Not sure much of that would be allowed these days!

JessicaBrassica · 08/09/2023 14:36

Through high school mum made lunches at half term and slung them in a bag in the freezer. On my way to school id pick up something like a round of sandwiches, mini pizza, slice of quiche or a samosa. It had usually defrosted by lunchtime! Always came home starving and ate my body weight in biscuits.

Ah memories Bichette. Did your ice cream van sell single cigarettes? Ours did. A 99 and a fag for a few bob.

No I don't remember it selling cigarettes !!
I thought the sweets and chocolate was bad enough !

I had free school dinners so a packed lunch was a rare treat. Usually for a school trip. The best bit was a carton of Umbongo? Or strawberry Ribena.

Paste sandwiches on white bread
A Kit Kat/ penguin bar
Some sort of crisps
Apple

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/09/2023 20:08

Also - can’t believe all the peanut butter that went down back in the day! None of that these days (for good reason!).

Not really. I've worked in lots of schools and none of them have banned peanuts. The advice these days is generally not to ban. There is no evidence it actually reduces deaths or hospitalizations from anaphylaxis.

Willmafrockfit · 08/09/2023 20:24

ds had peanut butter sandwiches every day back in about 2002
