How did it compare to your child's packed lunch now?

I was allowed packed lunch in secondary and usually had the following;

Ryvita with either marmite or cheese.
Apple
Crisps
Penguin or club bar.

Pineapplewaves · 06/09/2023 20:28

Peanut butter sandwich (often round green and mouldy at the bottom of my bag at the end of the school holidays 🤮).
Crisps, multipack biscuit and an apple (rarely eaten).

I have no memory of having a drink in my lunch box but someone above mentioned um bongo which I remember DM buying and moonshine which was nicer. I also remember freezing plastic bottles containing squash in the summer months at secondary.

My DC have a sandwich, crisps, multipack biscuit, an apple or banana and a bear yo-yo. I used to give them yogurt but got fed up of them coming home wearing it!

Cheese slice on white (Sunblest) bread, onion ring crisps or Monster Munch, Blue Riband or a Taxi biscuit, and diluted orange juice in my Roland Rat flask. All in my Roland Rat lunchbox.

The option didn't exist. School lunches or you went home for lunch.
Born in the late 60's so at school early 70's.

Yeah this was my experience my mum worked mornings and evenings so we went home . you used to get a hamroll and a bottle of merry mate (other cheap fizz is available) for school trips.

WorriedMillie · 06/09/2023 20:31

1980s. Mine were pretty boring I thing, probably a cheese sandwich, crisps, biscuit and a tangerine or apple. My friend’s mum used to peel her tangerine and wrap it in cling film 🤣
School sold soup for 20p a cup, so I sometimes had that too!

DD doesn’t have packed lunch at her current school, but at her first school typically had baguette with cheese on the side (don’t ask), cucumber, carrot sticks, breadsticks, yoghurt and maybe a small sweet thing like a biscuit
The lunch box rules were rather…ambiguous 👀👀

Creamandcookies · 06/09/2023 20:33

I didn't have packed lunches but my children do.

They generally have,
Half a sandwich (ham, cheese or jam)
Packet of crisps.
Two types of fruit.
Yogurt or Jelly
A kit kat or a yoyo.
It sounds boring but it's what they enjoy.

Mrsjayy · 06/09/2023 20:34

My eldest Is in her 30s so it was probably a billy bear sandwich crisps fruit and an orange drink in a flask

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/09/2023 20:35

Mine and my kids are very similar actually

Mine:

Sandwich or roll
Can of fizzy juice
Crisps
Chocolate
Maybe a piece of fruit

My kids:

Sandwich usually wholemeal but white if I am feeling benevolent
Capri sun or some other kind of juice
Crisps
Chocolate biscuit
Fruit for daughter (don't bother with son as he won't eat it)

Nitgel · 06/09/2023 20:35

Bloater paste sandwich, can of coke, mint club.

Tessisme · 06/09/2023 20:35

I went home for lunch in primary school. In secondary school (early 80s) I had a sandwich, an apple and a biscuit like a Penguin (I always wanted a United!) No crisps allowed. My mum wasn't strict, but she absolutely refused to relent on her no crisps decree. I now eat them like they're about to be banned from the earth. The sandwich was usually tuna and ketchup (I CHOSE this🤣), sausage and brown sauce or luncheon meat etc. I brought Quosh in a Tupperware drinks container. It was always warm.

DS1 takes a chicken sandwich or tuna pasta salad or cold pizza, a mixture of fruit which I lovingly cut up for him and place in a tub, a scone or slice of fruit loaf or yoghurt and a cereal bar. Sometimes crisps instead of one of the other snacks. And a bottle of water. He's 15 and has had a variation on this theme since P1, just in smaller quantities back then. DS2 I despair of, as he won't eat much in school due to his OCD. It's a bloody minefield.

Runnerduck34 · 06/09/2023 20:36

White bread sandwich filled with either ham or cheese or paste or corned beef.
Crisps
Maybe a chicolate biscuit like a penguin if I was lucky.
Orange squash.

longwayoff · 06/09/2023 20:36

Only the diabetic twins were permitted to have a packed lunch. You ate school dinners or went home for lunch.

xigris · 06/09/2023 20:37

God this is a total blast from the past. I’m remembering long forgotten packed lunches (primary school in the 80s)

My mum used to do honey sandwiches (I loathe honey now), marmite and lettuce sandwiches (lush), hard boiled eggs with salt in a twist of tin foil, tepid hot chocolate or soup in a flask, mini apple pies, fruit, and like a previous poster those weird set yoghurts in mad flavours! They were horrid. Also, like a pp I had one of those Tupperware water cups that made the water taste horrid and plasticky.

My eldest DC is rubbish at eating at school so just takes a protein shake, youngest is very set in his ways and has a sandwich or wrap with usually cheese and pickle or a vegetarian sausage roll plus a yogurt, fruit and cereal bar. He’s ND and v high energy so as long as he eats it I’m not too fussed about nutritional values! My middle one is a proper foodie and I love making his packed lunches. He likes a bento box and likes lots of interesting things like olives, seaweed, pasta salads, sushi etc. I’m always on the look out for things to add to his lunchbox, it’s great! (I am aware I need a life)

Debini · 06/09/2023 20:37

When I was at Infants School I went home for lunch and had something like beans on toast or alphabetty spaghetti.
When I went to Junior School I had a paste sandwich with white bread. A carton of pop and a bag of crisps 😱

Cheese and cucumber sandwiches, or cucumber and marmite sandwiches, or a whole meal stottie with 'french salad' which was tomatoes, cucumber, celery, radish, lettuce and pepper chopped up with mayonnaise. Always an apple or an orange, sometimes crisps or a penguin.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 06/09/2023 20:42

Sandwich, cheese/ham/corned beef, crisps, yoghurt, chocolate biscuit, breakaway, or penguin or similar, piece of fruit, apple or satsuma. Flask of squash.

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 06/09/2023 20:45

Sandwich spread sandwich, chocolate biscuit, crisps, fruit.

But I usually went home for lunch and had something like tinned macaroni cheese on toast, fruit, chocolate biscuit.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/09/2023 20:45

I never had a packed lunch ever. At primary I mostly went home with the occasional school lunch. At secondary i lived very close to the school and always went home.

SpaceRaiders · 06/09/2023 20:45

A jam sandwich on cheap white bread, an apple and a bottle of water. Occasionally we’d get a wagon wheel or biscuit.

Mine have have three course school dinners. 🙄

LuluBlakey1 · 06/09/2023 20:46
