I love this!

“Longest sugar smacks”… colour me curious.

We moved into my grandparents house when they’d died and inherited their cleaning cupboard and there was two old bottles of fairy liquid that I managed to work out was from the 80s. They lasted ages. The replacement ones from nowadays have not.

ValBiro · 05/09/2023 19:42

Looks like a very big cake is being made!

Also... I note the absence of fresh food, which I'm guessing would be bought at a greengrocers separate to all the tinned and dry goods? What would that shop be called? Not a supermarket as that implies having everything under one roof. Just... A market? But where? A covered market stall once a week? Or a proper shop?

It really is interesting! So many questions!

girlwhowearsglasses · 05/09/2023 19:43

Very sugary! Fascinating. Lovely handwriting

ValBiro · 05/09/2023 19:43

What's on the right hand page, @Trouthallgrapefruit ? #overinvested 😆

PerilTheBeryl · 05/09/2023 19:43

Sugar Smacks are breakfast cereal

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 19:43

Yes i assume all the fresh things would be bought at butchers/ greengrocers etc.
3lbs of lurpak sounds luxurious doesn’t it in these times 😂

Largest sugar smacks I think. Sugar smacks was a breakfast cereal. My brother liked it but I didn't.

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 19:44

@ValBiro its a whole BOOK of shopping lists!

That would be a grocers. We used to have one on our local parade of shops-it was a row of…grocers, post office, butchers, green grocers, florist, bakers, wool shop and pet shop.

The same row of shops is now a fish and chips shop, a Chinese, a dog-friendly cafe, a double glazing shop and a funeral directors. Quite a change!

menopausalmare · 05/09/2023 19:49

24 eggs but only 1/4 tongue.

Chocolatefreak · 05/09/2023 19:50

Tongue! My mum used to buy it in 1976 but only for the cat. I do remember tinned tongue though!

ArcticBells · 05/09/2023 19:51

I have a Christmas present book that goes back to 1976.

weebarra · 05/09/2023 19:52

It looks a bit like my mum's handwriting too!

It looks like mine and I’m only 40. I’m definitely old before my time

Interesting isn’t it!

Those golden years where smart phones didn't exist 👀👀

jay55 · 05/09/2023 19:54

@ValBiro a grocers shop. Grocers for dry goods, green grocer for fruit and veg.

I love they got 2 dozen eggs but only 2 loo rolls.

CosyCoffee · 05/09/2023 19:56

That's exactly like my nan's handwriting! How fascinating.

LadyMadderLake · 05/09/2023 19:56

It’s interesting how branded it is - I choose the brand when I get to the shop, or just don’t think about it and pick the best value or most useful size. I’d never heard of trout hall but I googled it and you can still get trout hall grapefruit.

She (I reckon this is a she) must have a massive larder or else she’s making a humongous cake for a wedding or something.

Katmai · 05/09/2023 19:58

24 eggs for 45p.

I'd like to see the shopping lists for the greengrocer and the butcher.
