Cream soda! I don’t remember that in the 1970s, I first had it in the USA in ‘97.

I remember it from the 1960s. American Cream Soda.

I particularly love one week where there’s an addition scribbled in pencil, 10 consulate and two walnut whips. It’s so incongruous to the usual disciplined shops but I think we can all relate to those weeks 😄

I bet the inlaws were visiting. Smokes for him, whips for her. I say inlaws because I reckon it would be more personalised if it was her parents (or it could be bc it was my fathers parents that had the consulate).

My Nan got cream soda from the Alpine lorry for when we visited, 70s and 80s.

I think it’s clean lemonade ? It comes up quite frequently. I wonder if it means opposed to cloudy. I’ve never heard the expression?

What's cream lemonade? Or am I misreading this?

Clear lemonade. As opposed to cloudy.

Passthecake30 · 05/09/2023 21:46

also looks like my mums handwriting! She’s 85.

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 21:46

Another thing that comes up a few times is spaghetti hoops (not cheese)??
Were cheese spaghetti hoops a thing? 🤢

Am I the only one finding this a bit moving?

The minutiae of a life…

It’s lovely but also making me feel sad and nostalgic. Nicer times I think.

WavyLines11 · 05/09/2023 21:43

Or is it clean lemonade?!

It's CLEAR lemonade, because you could also get cloudy lemonade and pink lemonade.

airforsharon · 05/09/2023 21:49

My Nan worked in a old sweetshop/tobacconists in the 60s & 70s, and i used to go and help her when i was staying with her & my Grandad. I loved it, was (even then) like stepping back in time.

Lifeomars · 05/09/2023 21:49

Be-ro flour, I wonder if they had the Be-Ro cook book. My mum had one, it was small and thin with really good baking recipes. I bought a copy relatively recently for the memories it evoked. Does anyone else remember coffee kisses? There are some excellent very straight forward baking receipies in the book, it's my go to when I can't quite recall how to make crumble or scones off the top of my head.

Oh we had this! I remember the cover being a mustardy-beige colour.

Taxbreak · 05/09/2023 21:56

A long-dead colleague used to talk about his mother and her sister traipsing around all the shops around Tooting, South London from Monday to Thursday to find the keenest prices before doing the weekly shop on a Friday.
There was a special smell associated with the general store/corner shop - probably soap powder and potatoes in sacks - never encountered an Arkwright, but do remember being shocked at six and seven year-olds buying 'Two Embassy Number 6" for their mum.

Likewise- and I just noticed your username 🤣

Sunnydays41 · 05/09/2023 21:58

What is scary is that it feels like the "olden days" (both the date and the contents!), yet it was only 14 years before I was born, which is the same time span as between now and 2009 😂

Yes there were some with unpleasant little flecks of cheese in the tomato sauce. I suspect it was supposed to be like Parmesan.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/09/2023 21:59

What a lovely find.

Re small children being sent to buy cigarettes, I remember being stopped by a strange man in the shopping centre when I was 9 at the most (because we moved before I was 10) who asked if I would go over buy him some cigarettes. He gave me the money, and I think he must have promised I could have the change, or something, or I can't see why I would have done it. I was happy to oblige. Another world, in a good many respects!

BMW6 · 05/09/2023 22:03

I'm wondering if this person ran a Guest House?
All that cereal, butter and marmalade every week.....

SecretShambles · 05/09/2023 22:03

ValBiro · 05/09/2023 19:42

Looks like a very big cake is being made!

Also... I note the absence of fresh food, which I'm guessing would be bought at a greengrocers separate to all the tinned and dry goods? What would that shop be called? Not a supermarket as that implies having everything under one roof. Just... A market? But where? A covered market stall once a week? Or a proper shop?

It really is interesting! So many questions!

A 'grocers'? ( without the green). I remember one on our road as a child in the 80s. Not a corner shop, not a supermarket. I suppose it would be a tesco express or small co op nowadays

AInightingale · 05/09/2023 21:29

My granny gave us tinned strawberries and raspberries with cream after dinner. They're pretty terrible, but I had a massive craving for them when expecting my children.

Tinned cream, I hope! I loved that stuff. We often had that or a rectangular block of ice cream (vanilla, Cornish or Neapolitan) which came in a cardboard package* with a tin of fruit cocktail. It was a red letter day if I got the bit of cherry. Grin

*Bought not long before consumption and kept in the tiny icebox at the top of the fridge, which was the only freezer space we had. Other items kept there, for short periods before use, were fish fingers and frozen peas. There was usually room for an ice cube tray too. One ice cube per drink.

I was sent to the newsagents for cigarettes as a child of 7 with a note from my dad

@Santonola The Persuaders is currently showing on a channel called Great TV, and 10pm weeknights.
My mum used to keep accounts like this for all her shopping.
