Farming family?

Special K was originally targeted at men and there's a lot of cake involved here (I didn't see a date - maybe one was preparing for Stir Up Sunday and the next was for after the New Year, especially as there isn't any meat or veg ordered.

That looks just like my nan's handwriting, who would have born 1920, also a fan of grapefruit!

I do remember a French teacher telling me (in the 90s at least) that all French children are taught a certain handwriting, it's sounds as though that's something we've lost.

Fascinating thanks so much for posting.

Decimalisation was February 1972 if I remember correctly. Moving to 1/2p increased inflation slightly. All prices were rounded up.

It was 15 Feb 1971 so might be encompassed in the OP's book.

King cut marmalade sounds very luxurious

Cookerhood · 05/09/2023 20:34

weebarra · 05/09/2023 20:20

Is that more marmalade?!

Must have been my grandmother, my father ate marmalade about 1 inch thick!
Where did you find the grocery book, OP?

coxesorangepippin · 05/09/2023 20:34

3lb lurpack

🤠🤠

Myhorseishoarse · 05/09/2023 20:38

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 20:42

I remember going shopping with my mum in the 60s/70s - she had a book very like that, to keep a record of how much she had spent.

After we'd been to the grocer's, where we'd stand at the counter and say what we wanted, for the grocer (Mr Samson, Thrift stores, Leeds 8!) to go and fetch what we wanted. Then we'd drive round the corner and visit the baker, (Mr Turnbull), the butcher (Mr Lister) and the greengrocer (Mrs Palmer and her son).

Shopping took a long time in those days, but it was also much more personal

ValBiro · 05/09/2023 20:48

@Shinyandnew1 I am not sure how that had never occured to me... It just being a grocers with the "green" removed. Feel a bit dense for not knowing this! It's not like I'm overly young (or green haha) myself either, I'm 38! It is incredible and also quite sad in a way how much that row of shops you've described has changed.

EmmaPaella · 05/09/2023 20:50

Love this.

My Grandma’s shopping lists were similar and always very precise, we did she shopping for her each week. If we got the wrong size package or brand she would reject it!

Another grandparent owned a corner grocery shop up to 1969. They sold stuff like this, also fresh mince, ham and eggs and did deliveries.

EmmaPaella · 05/09/2023 20:50

Her not she!

Are you my sister?! It looks like my Mum’s too !!!!

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 20:53

They bought Adams butter every week until one day they tasted Lurpak and never went back 😂
We’re in reverse now we’re all off the lurpak, what a time to be alive!

Treacle!!!
On antpehr note...
We've just come back from 'real' Europe and the shopping was much smaller scale and at individual, smaller shops, with chatting and courtesy.

Trouthallgrapefruit · 05/09/2023 20:54

I found it in a charity shop, in with the books , for those asking. Yorkshire , loosely.

Love this! I wonder how much that much lurpak would be now!

I'd reckon 3lb lurpak has gone from 12 shillings then to £12 now (based on £4 for a 400g / lb ish tub)

And mine. Born in 1937, so would have been 32 at the time. She only had five+her (animals not included as that all came from the pet shop in sacks) to feed, though, so the dry goods weren't so high.

TennisWithDeborah · 05/09/2023 21:02

Cream soda! I don’t remember that in the 1970s, I first had it in the USA in ‘97.

I do, but it came from the Corona man.

Exactly. It's the dry and tinned, rather than the fresh in that order book.

Cake was a significant part of fuelling farming, especially with proper coffee.
