30 degrees next week just as everyone goes back to school and work

It’s the same every year! Boiling hot when everyone is back at school and work. Even more annoying this year when the weather has been so crap!

Not looking forward to commuting in the heat.

Most people work all
year 😂

I love September weather - it's nearly always a good weather month.

@BusinessClass yes

I hate the bloody weather. I'm taking it personally. Been waiting to paint and re-roof a cabin all summer and there hasn't been a dry spell all the time I've been off.

Back at work Monday.

We've been wanting to paint the fence and just had two weeks off and the weather has been crap. Bloody typical, all next week is perfect here.

I think they meant they work in reception class, i.e. 4-5 year olds?

Oh right. Never mind. It stops them getting skin cancer.

Wasn't able to book leave during July and August because no school aged kids, so I'm off the next two weeks - quite glad the sun as returned and its looking like it won't be a washout!

Is that the reason given to you? That's awful

CoffeeWithCheese · 03/09/2023 14:08

I'm on leave the start of the week so that's fine - the multiple hours on work visits between sites at the end of the week where I'm going to feel like I've been welded into the car seat by sweat... less fun.

That’s not ‘working all year round’ though, is it?

It’s very tiresome when folk pretend they don’t know perfectly well there is a general cultural sense of many people taking some leave during July and August, even if it does not directly or literally apply to their personal annual leave arrangements.

Even if you don’t take any leave at all during July and August there are seasonal events, attractions, and activities which only happen during high summer and which are affected by disappointing weather. Some might carry on a week or two into September but many don’t.

if everyone in the country took six weeks off in the summer things would pretty quickly grind to a halt. You should be thanking the MAJORITY of the British workers for staying at work so the privileged few can take time off with their children.

Statutory leave is 20 days plus 8 public hols.

@EucalyptusAndOranges god I’d love it if the school holidays could be split into 3 weeks in June and 3 weeks in September!

I bloody wouldn't. Those of us without school age kids go abroad at that time of year!

BarbieKew · 03/09/2023 14:13

I don’t know how anyone can moan about a nice late summer! It’s glorious today, and like someone else said it’s a good week to get all the duvets, coats, throws, pet beds, rugs etc washed and properly dried in the lovely lovely sunshine!

Please don’t rewrite my post. I said ‘many people’ take ‘some leave during July and August’ and you know perfectly well that this is accurate.

So you'd go in August instead, there'd be no school holidays then if they were in June and September 😉

Hollyhead · 03/09/2023 14:15

@SleeplessinSeattle53 good point, I’ve only got another 8 years or so to go before they’re an option again!

WallaceinAnderland · 03/09/2023 14:22

This isn't a new thing is it? September is often lovely. Even years ago my DD used to go back to school in her summer dress.

The last couple of years have seen glorious October in southern UK too. I remember we moved house and bought the removal men ice creams.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 03/09/2023 14:24

@Beezknees August is too hot in Europe. I like bookending the summer with my holidays 😎

My husband's birthday is mid-September and its pretty much always nice weather that week. Its definitely not an unusual occurance.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/09/2023 14:27

It actually is true every year! Every single blinking year. It's why September is my favourite month - it has the best weather - for SE England at least.

It was 28 degrees on my birthday once - right at the end of the month.

moderationincludingmoderation · 03/09/2023 14:29

I'm quite pleased, mainly as I hadnt got round to sorting out a new winter school uniform and new school shoes..

RabbitsRock · 03/09/2023 14:29

I don’t deal with heat very well now I’m in my 50s & really struggled in last year’s high temperatures. Lucky enough to live near the beach & hopefully it won’t be so crowded now so I can go for a cooling swim. Work is a struggle as there’s no air conditioning. We have fans on the tills but they don’t really do a lot!

sleepyscientist · 03/09/2023 14:32

@IsNowTheTime that would actually be nice to have a slow summer enjoying the weather. You could offer all the uni student jobs to cover the fun things in life so they can afford to enjoy next term.

FictionalCharacter · 03/09/2023 13:16

Same. It’s baffling how people go on about going back to work after the summer. Most people get 4 weeks annual leave a year and take some but not all in the summer. But some people seem to think everyone is a teacher and doesn’t go to work in the school holidays.
I work in a university and loads of people think we get all the student vacation periods off! If only. Research, admin, catering, security, building and grounds maintenance, refurbishment etc are going on literally 24/7 every day of the year.

I know MN never misses a chance for a dig at teachers but it really isn’t just teachers who have to take their leave in July and August. Pretty much every manufacturing plant in the UK has a summer shutdown when workers have to take around 10 days of their annual leave whether they want to or not.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 03/09/2023 12:56

Gosh, so many people on this thread who apparently don’t receive their statutory annual leave entitlement.

Hmm

Most people with kids need to spread that holiday entitlement over the 12 weeks the kids have off over the year so don't take it all in the summer.

Beezknees · 03/09/2023 14:35

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 03/09/2023 14:24

Agree with that, I usually go in May as I can't cope with any heat 25+ 😭

honeyandfizz · 03/09/2023 14:44

Not everybody can get time off in the summer. At my work most of the six weeks are usually booked up by those with younger kids. Now mine are older I much prefer a September break anyway no young kids anywhere to be seen and hot weather.....bliss 😎

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/09/2023 14:49

@LindorDoubleChoc Mr Monkey ran the Berlin marathon at the end of September in 2006 and it was 30 degrees. He was not happy!

I'm gutted, I work in school, no, not everyone works all summer anyway.
To add insult to injury I work in reception, we'll have to put suncream on the little darlings too!

We don’t apply suncream at my school but the new starters will only be in Thursday and Friday morning. At least we will be able to have the children outside and not crammed in the class room. And I Hate this hot weather!
