Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

@Sitchervice @justasking111 I used to think it was the brother too - but a podcast called the prosecutors convinced me it really wasn’t likely, it’s a fascinating podcast if you’re interested, they did a 10 part series on JonBenet (though if you can’t face that much and are familiar with the case then just the last one summarises their theories including why they don’t think it was the brother).

There was something on crimewatch in the 1980s that terrified me and I can remember it to this day.

Someone set fire to a house in Hastings. The parents survived and the children died! I was so so shocked by this reconstruction and it's stayed with me.

I don't think anyone was ever caught :(

The Dyatlov pass incident - something caused 9 experienced hikers to cut their way out of their tent in the middle of the night half way up a mountain in temperatures as low as -40. They then WALKED over a mile, some with no shoes. Nothing in the tent was disturbed. All 9 died. Six of hypothermia, one of skull fractures and two from chest injuries. The report at the time concluded they met with “calamity or an unknown compelling force”.

The leading theory is an avalanche though for various reasons that seems unlikely (no evidence of avalanches happening in the area, no damage to the tent etc.) Other theories involve a kgb plot, military exercises, strange winds, nuclear experiments (some of their stuff was radioactive, attack by local people or a yeti - very little actual evidence of anything.

Freaks me out whenever I think of it - what could make 9 people cut out of their only shelter and, in an apparently orderly fashion, walk without clothes into those conditions?

I also mentioned this case. It’s unbelievably mysterious and odd isn’t it, I have tried to think of many logical theories as to what happened but none manage to slot every bit of evidence in & therefore don’t make complete sense. It’s such a baffling case!

Human combustion doesn't seem to happen anymore. It seems to have declined at the same time as smoking rates. Less people smoke so less have a stroke / heart attack holding a fag.

It seems to have declined in recent years.

There has also been a drop in old ladies falling asleep wearing highly flammable clothes whilst smoking a cigarette.

@jellytotsparkles

I convinced myself I for a while that it was the guy who they spoke to about their route (just googled and his name was Rempel) - one of the women wrote just his name in her diary as the last entry before they died.

But really I don’t see how or why one guy they’d just met would or could cause what happened. And I think he spoke to police afterwards and they didn’t think he was suspicious.

I’ve remembered another one - the murder of Alistair Wilson in Nairn. Deeply strange set of circumstances.

There is a good podcast on BBC sounds about that.

I heard a very interesting explanation of the Jill Dando case.

It was a professional hit, but the killer got the wrong woman. He killed Dando on her doorstep under the mistaken belief she was the wife of a Russian businessman, with dodgy connections, who actually lived a street down from Dando. Both women were blonde, slim, same hairstyle, same dress sense.

It was, in short, a case of mistaken identity.

It's the only explanation I've ever heard that makes sense to me.

It wasn’t that professional, the gun cartridge left at scene, gun/bullet used, etc. Clumsy (?) Interesting theory.

bumblenbean · 02/09/2023 23:58

A lot of these- also Billie Jo Jenkins. Poor girl had a troubled background, was fostered by a seemingly loving family
only to be murdered. From memory the foster father was convicted and then it was overturned but there were no other viable suspects

Re the Putney jogger- what’s so chilling is that after pushing her he doesn’t even seem to look back to see what happened. Just literally shoves her and keeps going without a second glance. Was it a ‘one off’ or were there any other incidents?

also Kathleen Peterson from The Staircase - so bizarre. I was convinced he did it but then the ‘blood spatter’ expert was roundly discredited. Maybe the barn owl theory was right?! 👀🙄

I will not explain this well, but I read something recently about a female body being found, not sure when, possibly in Poland. I think she was thought to have been a spy?

Anyone know the case I mean? Blush

The one in a hotel that had shot herself/ been shot?

Tiffbiff · 03/09/2023 00:00

For the ‘Making a murderer fans out there’ I still don’t know who killed Teresa Halbach, but don’t think it was Steven Avery 🤷‍♀️

TheShapeOfAnOwl · 03/09/2023 00:00

@Georgeandzippyzoo do you mean this case?

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary

It wasn't on a ship it was in a hotel in Los Angeles.

Why my child doesn't sleep at night

Outonaschoolnight · 03/09/2023 00:05

Andrew Gosden. So sad how his Dad has never given up looking.

Mummyof287 · 03/09/2023 00:08

@bumblenbean the Billie Jo Jenkins case is awful....the step dad is 100% guilty.... both his wife and children said he was violent towards them, and there was history of Billie making disclosures of him harming her.Not to mention the DNA evidence.Cannot beleive he isn't still behind bars :( Really hope they reconsider

CassiniG · 03/09/2023 00:08

I googled unidentified bodies that have been found and they make for sad reading that no one has come forward to say they know who it is.

Milford Haven, November 21, 1987

A woman's body was found on Musselwick Beach in Milford Haven.
She had been in the water for several weeks or months and was wearing red nail varnish on her toes.
She was aged between 20 and 45, was white European and 165cm to 168cm in height.
She had size 12 jeans, a green striped sweatshirt, white socks and two rings. One of the rings was on the middle left finger and was gold with a large red ruby stone. The other was on the right little finger and was silver with a small ruby stone.

excelledyourself · 03/09/2023 00:09

@sadaboutmycat no, I'm sure she was found somewhere remote, and had been known as a few different names, etc.

I’ll start with mine: Spontaneous Combustion. Part of me is like there’s no way, but how are whole bodies found burned to a crisp without anything else around them being at the very least scorched. You can’t burn a body and THEN move it, so what happened?

Omg! As a child I read an English exercise about this and I was in a constant panic about it.

CassiniG · 03/09/2023 00:12

Believed to be an accidental drowning but no one has identified her.

Barmouth, June 28, 1978
A woman's body was recovered from the sea one mile off shore from Barmouth.
She was 55, white European, 152cm to 168cm tall and of medium build.
It is believed she died on June 7, 1978. She had been wearing a navy blue and white floral pattern swimsuit. Swimwear - Swimsuit - Multi - Floral - St. Michaels Lycra Swimsuit, Bust Size 38". Navy Blue Background And White Floral Pattern.

Thought to have been in the water 2/3 weeks.

Tambatamba · 03/09/2023 00:13

Elisa Lam really freaks me out. The strange behaviour. And how did she get in that water tank.
