my DD is 6 months into an apprenticeship and considering applying for a degree with foundation year afterwards. We were under the impression that a L3 apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A Levels. I was having trouble establishing exactly how many UCAS points were obtained so emailed the training provider. the answer is, zero UCAS points!!

have we been really stupid?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and now you can use the information going forwards to check that what she is studying gives her what’s she needs to progress.

RottenVegetables · 01/09/2023 14:35

I am sure this has been misrepresented though

Are you getting them confused with T levels perhaps? Those do have UCAS points.

According to the UCAS website Level 3 Apprenticeships can be used to access University courses.

120-139 credits is 48 UCAS points
140 - 159 credits is 64 UCAS points
160 - 179 credits is 80 UCAS points

no, seriously...a Google search shows erroneous info but careers advisors at college (that she dropped out of) told her the same

Is your dc still doing the level 3 qualification? Iirc it is that which attracts ucas points.

Hellocatshome · 01/09/2023 14:49

Who has told you now that she doesnt get UCAS points for the level 3 qualifications she receives through the apprenticeship?

CountTo10 · 01/09/2023 14:50

I think the course provider may be wrong. Certainly all the googling I've states that Level 3 apprenticeship gets you into Uni especially if she's applying for a foundation year.

The BBC website gives more info.

Chersfrozenface · 01/09/2023 14:54

OP, is you DD definitely doing an advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship?

The UCAS site says "Level 3 apprenticeships are also known as advanced apprenticeships and are generally considered to be equivalent to two A level passes."

Sorry I've seen it was the training provider. I think whoever you spoke to may be mistaken. What qualifications is she actually doing under the apprenticeship? If you look them up they should tell you the UCAS points associated to them.

LucyLastik · 01/09/2023 14:57

I did a level 3 apprenticeship (admittedly a few years ago now) and got on to my foundation degree. I then had the option of stopping there or going on to finish the full 3 year undergrad through a top up year.

Pitstop1986 · 01/09/2023 15:12

I did an nvq level 3 and that was enough to get me into uni for a degree

smartiecake · 01/09/2023 15:37

On the UCAS website you can search for hundreds of qualifications, vocational ones and it will tell you how many UCAS points for each qualification. Worth checking as I guess some will have more than others depending on the qualification

exactly @Hellocatshome . but it isn't the case 🤷🏼‍♀️...I have had an email confirmation from the training provider, that it carries no UCAS points (although there are plans for this to happen at some point)

yes it is definitely level 3. this is the reason she is doing it

you are all telling me the information that we had gathered before she applied for an apprenticeship. it seems, it is incorrect.

i have been sent this link by the training provider. it's an article in FE Week about plans to get UCAS points attached to apprenticeships by the end of the year.

https://feweek.co.uk/ucas-points-for-apprenticeships-planned-by-the-end-of-2023/

UCAS points for apprenticeships planned by the end of 2023

There are several qualifications that don't carry UCAS points, but that will still be accepted by universities for entry. And a lot of universities don't even use tariff points. You're best to contact universities she may be interested in and ask them if they accept the apprenticeship, either on its own or alongside other qualifications.

Chersfrozenface · 01/09/2023 15:51

Here's the Government Apprenticeship website

"At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll achieve the equivalent education level. For example, if you complete a level 3 apprenticeship, you’ll achieve the equivalent of an A level."

https://www.apprenticeships.gov.uk/apprentices/becoming-apprentice#

Is it worth contacting the provider again with the information from the UCAS and Government sites and asking why the apprenticeship your DD is doing doesn't give her UCAS points?

Gymmum82 · 01/09/2023 15:53

Level 3 apprenticeships do give UCAS points. Unless she’s doing a level 3 non actual qualification that’s by some made up provider. In which case it will not. But an apprenticeship that gives you a proper qualification definitely will

feathermucker · 01/09/2023 15:56

What is the full title of her apprenticeship and who is she doing it with?

Chersfrozenface · 01/09/2023 15:57

UCAS points from a Level 3 apprenticeship depend on the number of credits obtained.

Is your DD being awarded credits, OP?

https://completeapprenticeshipguide.com/how-many-ucas-points-is-a-level-3-apprenticeship-worth/

Hellocatshome · 01/09/2023 15:59

An apprenticeship isn't a qualification. You usually achieve certain qualifications whilst on your apprenticeship. What actual qualifications is she doing?

MarchionessOfMayhem · 01/09/2023 16:03

What apprentice is she actually doing? Some of the qualifications within apprenticeships will give UCAS points.

RottenVegetables · 01/09/2023 16:06

this is it

so level 3 apprenticeships DONT give you UCAS points!! 😱
