my DD is 6 months into an apprenticeship and considering applying for a degree with foundation year afterwards. We were under the impression that a L3 apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A Levels. I was having trouble establishing exactly how many UCAS points were obtained so emailed the training provider. the answer is, zero UCAS points!!

have we been really stupid?

Ah, Equine Business Management.

Have a look at foundation degrees at land based colleges- they tend to be flexible.

The Uni has its own. 😊

@RottenVegetables
I think your DD is in a great position. Once you've spoken to the Uni, she will have options and choices, which is great!
If she chooses to stay in her current org, she can forge a solid career and progress. They do degree apprenticeships within all Govt depts.
if she chooses to follow the Equine Business Management, she will either enter at direct undergraduate or foundation depending on what they want and what mark she gets.
Not many young people will have her experience and worldliness. Win! 😊

Foundation Year precedes a degree.

There is definitely ways around it though although I don't know what it is. I know a few mature students recently got onto nursing degrees and they certainly haven't sat any A levels or A level equivalents but have relevant work experience and I think did an access course.

Access courses are worth ucas points though.

OP,

I work at a university and yes while applications are done via ucas they just forward all the applications on to the university. The admissions team will look to see if the applicant meets the course requirements and they may confer with academic staff if there’s any doubt. It’s possible depending on the course there may be some discretion allowed but if this course carried no ucas points and if it’s a popular course then I think you may not the answer you’d like.

wait for the email reply but also in sept/oct it’s open day season…..go and talk to the academics at the uni on an open day and see what they think./recommend.

So if she’s 6 months in there may be two options. She finishes the apprenticeship and then does something else such as an access course (which I think she can do at 19). Or she finishes now and see if she can get into college to do a btec or something, potentially starting next week!

VeloVixen · 01/09/2023 22:10

Sorry, probably ignore most of my last post you’ve had better advice about the specific course and also about the apprenticeship since I started typing! 😁. Open day visits still a good idea though?

Yes, I’m saying that colleges which offer foundation degrees tend to be flexible with entry requirements. There are a few land based colleges out there offering equine courses, so I’m saying OP’s daughter may have more than 2 options.

Is it an apprenticeship that's actually a "job training scheme" that is done with the hope that she would be employed in that company when she finishes - not leave and go off to university (so the company has to start again with doing an apprenticeship with another person when they actually want to employ someone).
I thought the whole point of apprenticeships was you do on the job training - to then do that job.

Most Govt based ones are fixed term, but the Apprentice can apply for roles once they have passed their Apprenticeship or probationary period.

Needmorelego · 02/09/2023 16:43

@sadaboutmycat that makes sense but the OP was asking about her daughter going to university instead of carrying on with the job.

she can stay with the organisation once the Apprenticeship has been completed. that was always her intention. but it's not compulsory and she is considering going to uni instead. mainly because she can't spend the next 40 years working from home, alone in her bedroom

@RottenVegetables I know nothing about UCAS points so it's hard to comment on what is the "right" thing to do but if this apprenticeship isn't really heading anywhere she wants to be wouldn't it make sense to give it up and start again with something more relevant ?

Songbird54321 · 02/09/2023 19:04

I did an apprenticeship which was an NVQ Level 3. Because it was classed as a vocational course, it did not carry UCAS points. No idea if that's changed now (we're talking well over a decade ago) but I think I'd have to do an access to higher education course to get into uni. I looked at it briefly when pondering whether to train as a midwife.

@RottenVegetables , you’ve had some good advice, and it seems all is very much not lost. I just wanted to say that it’s well worth talking to Hartpury directly so you are fully in the picture. I was there in the summer for the RDA National Championships and thought at the time it must be a fab place to study.

Does Nottingham Trent Uni also have equine management? They have a good reputation for equine teaching I think, but I can see why Hartpury is a big pull.
