so level 3 apprenticeships DONT give you UCAS points!! 😱

RottenVegetables · 01/09/2023 14:18

my DD is 6 months into an apprenticeship and considering applying for a degree with foundation year afterwards. We were under the impression that a L3 apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A Levels. I was having trouble establishing exactly how many UCAS points were obtained so emailed the training provider. the answer is, zero UCAS points!!

have we been really stupid?

That's rubbish, if it's what she has her heart set on, but working in the Civil Service will open up huge opportunities for her and she may end up with no student debt and a well paid job.

Hellocatshome · 01/09/2023 18:53

There is a lot to be said for staying where she is and working up the ladder with no student debt.

RottenVegetables · 01/09/2023 18:57

@Plankingplanks and @Hellocatshome yes definitely and this was her plan in the beginning really. but, 1) everyone is working from home, it's not great for young uns entering the work force, is it. 2) she doesn't have enough work to do and 3) she's not sure office based work is for her. I mean it is hard to gauge 3 because of 1 and 2.

That link says it's currently being reviewed. It says after 12-18 mths it's a Level 3.

An apprenticeship isn't a qualification. You usually achieve certain qualifications whilst on your apprenticeship. What actual qualifications is she doing?

Incorrect.
Many Apprenticeships do not have an underpinning Qualification, and are their own Qualification/ Certification.

OP you need to email the Universities that she wants to apply to and ask directly. The Training Provider is not the appropriate source.

sadaboutmycat · 01/09/2023 20:43

Hellocatshome · 01/09/2023 16:10

That doesn't show any qualifications, does she have a list of qualifications she is working towards? Has she sat any exams or submitted any work for assessment?

It is it's own Qualification.

Much misinformation on this thread.

Most Apprenticeships do NOT have an underpinning Diploma, since the introduction of Standards in 2017.

The Apprenticeship had its own Certification which is the Qualification.

That is fact. I am senior Management in an Approved Training Provider.

@RottenVegetables all Level 3 Apprenticeships are A Level Equivalent. Please don't listen to all the scaremongers.

What degree is she thinking of? Most Universities would take the fact that she has been working full time as a big plus, together with her Qualification and references that she will have.

Ah, right. How many UCAS tariff points are they worth?

I couldn't find them on the UCAS points calculator.
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator

Dotcheck · 01/09/2023 20:58

Right, I did some research on this a year back.

The universities I spoke with said they would look at the standard completed, and make a case by case decision.

Tariff points are just a way for universities to equate different types of qualifications. Just because a training pathway doesn’t attract points, it doesn’t mean universities won’t allow entrance.

However, what is the ultimate end game here? Would she consider the next level apprenticeship?

DefinitelyYouNotMe · 01/09/2023 20:58

Well this has been enlightening and the confusion OP had plus conflicting responses just goes to show this isn’t well understood.

I hope you/your DD get it resolved.

sadaboutmycat · 01/09/2023 21:00

@Chersfrozenface as per my previous post, the OP will need to speak to the University that her DD wishes to go to.

I have seen many achieved Apprentices go on to University, many who did not get 'enough' UCAS points from other tertiary education go to University, as weight is put on other area such as the interview, references and experience.

The direct UCAS points is the part that, as stated upthread, will potentially be determined in the near future.

Obviously a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration would not get you on to a Medical Degree, just the same as A level English alone would not either.

Would someone on an apprenticeship have to approach universities individually to apply for a place, then?

Would the training provider offer any help with this, as schools and FE colleges do with applications through UCAS?

sadaboutmycat · 01/09/2023 21:07

@RottenVegetables
Well looking at the course I think they'd be very impressed with with the Apprenticeship. The Uni I'm looking at has the option to do a first year at level 4 so if they felt, for any reason, that she needed it they would surely offer her that?
Literally give them a call on Monday.

My daughter is doing a level 3 apprenticeship and she will get UCAS points , so there must be different qualifications alongside different apprenticeships. Hers is in early year's education and tells you on the college website what you can progress onto with your level 3 (foundation degree etc).

sadaboutmycat · 01/09/2023 21:21

@RottenVegetables yes!

The Mandatory business units are a natural progression from what DD will have covered. The End Point Assessment in her Apprenticeship will tell the Uni that she can complete a project report and presentation professionally, complete a 45 minute interview around her role, and also a knowledge theory exam. It's very intense!
She can achieve a Pass or Distinction. She definitely wants to be aiming for a distinction and her Training Provider should be able to support her with what she needs to meet to achieve this. 😊

thank you so much for looking at that and advising.

it's the perfect course for her because she was flip flopping between wanting to do horses or business! she may well stay with the org that she's with now, they are very supportive etc but really not sure she is cut out for sitting at a computer all day. will have to see how things progress

Not sure if Writtle have that course, but they were very flexible when I went with regards admissions even without having studied appropriate subjects at A-level once I'd been for a meeting. My friend did the foundation and top up year to get the full degree as she didn't meet full criteria for the full course straight away. It's definitely possible!

Dotcheck · 01/09/2023 21:38

Ah, Equine Business Management.

Have a look at foundation degrees at land based colleges- they tend to be flexible.
